Choose the ESP32-C6 for a Matter-over-Thread endpoint when you want IEEE 802.15.4 built into the same chip. Choose the ESP32-S3 for a Matter-over-Wi-Fi device when its dual-core processor, optional PSRAM, USB, camera, display, or audio-oriented interfaces are more important than an integrated Thread radio.

A Wi-Fi Thread Border Router or Zigbee gateway is a different design decision: Espressif recommends a two-chip architecture, typically a Wi-Fi host plus an 802.15.4 radio co-processor, rather than relying on one C6 RF path for all traffic.

Matter is the application layer; Wi-Fi and Thread are different transports

Matter devices exchange application data over IP. A product can carry that traffic over Wi-Fi or over Thread, so “Matter support” does not identify the radio you need. A Matter-over-Wi-Fi device connects directly to the local Wi-Fi network. A Matter-over-Thread device uses the low-power Thread mesh and normally reaches the home IP network through a Thread Border Router.

That distinction determines the first hardware choice. Espressif’s Matter guide lists Wi-Fi-enabled ESP32, ESP32-C and ESP32-S devices for Matter Wi-Fi products, while it lists ESP32-H, ESP32-C5 and ESP32-C6 devices with IEEE 802.15.4 for Matter Thread products. See Espressif’s Matter platform documentation for the transport-specific guidance.

Both chips can therefore be sensible Matter parts, but they target different jobs. The C6 is the straightforward single-SoC choice for a Thread endpoint. The S3 is a Wi-Fi Matter choice whose additional processing and interface options can simplify a feature-rich product. Neither choice alone tells you how well a particular board, antenna, firmware release, or enclosure will perform.

ESP32-C6 and ESP32-S3 compared

The figures below are Espressif specifications, not an independent performance test. Module and development-board variants can change flash size, PSRAM, antenna implementation, pin exposure, and available connectors. Espressif’s board-selection guide should be checked against the exact part number you intend to build.

Matter transports Wi-Fi Matter and Matter-over-Thread; integrated 802.15.4 Wi-Fi Matter; no integrated 802.15.4 listed C6 can be a single-chip Thread endpoint. S3 is a Wi-Fi choice unless you add another Thread-capable radio.
Wireless interfaces 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6, Bluetooth LE, Thread 1.3 and Zigbee 3.0 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 4 and Bluetooth LE C6 adds Thread and Zigbee capability and a newer Wi-Fi generation. S3 has no built-in 802.15.4 interface.

Notable interfaces SDIO 2.0 slave, USB-JTAG and parallel PARLIO SDIO 3.0 host, USB 2.0 Full Speed and parallel display interfaces S3 is often the better physical fit for USB, display, camera, voice or image-oriented products; C6 suits lower-power IoT and Matter gateway roles.
Radio coexistence Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 802.15.4 share one 2.4 GHz RF path Can act as the Wi-Fi host in a documented two-SoC design with an H2 radio co-processor A busy C6 gateway can experience more Thread or Zigbee packet loss as Wi-Fi or Bluetooth traffic rises. A separate radio is preferred for sustained gateway traffic.

Espressif does not publish a comparable C6-versus-S3 application benchmark for Matter performance, power consumption, reliability or cost in the cited material. Do not turn the processor frequencies or radio generation into an unsupported percentage advantage.

Choose ESP32-C6 for a Matter-over-Thread endpoint

When the device itself joins the Thread mesh

Use a C6 when the product is a sensor, switch, lock, thermostat, or other endpoint that should communicate through Thread and you want the 802.15.4 radio on the main SoC. The integrated radio avoids adding a second microcontroller or an external 802.15.4 device solely to provide Thread connectivity.

The C6 also includes Bluetooth LE, which can be used by the commissioning flow required by your Matter stack, and 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi 6 for projects that may use Wi-Fi instead of Thread in another product variant. Its listed Thread 1.3 and Zigbee 3.0 support gives the silicon a wider low-power wireless role than the S3, although the protocol your firmware actually enables remains a software and product decision.

When low-power IoT matters more than application horsepower

Espressif positions the C6 for low-power IoT and Matter gateway applications. Its 160 MHz high-performance RISC-V core and 20 MHz low-power core are sufficient for many endpoint control loops, sensor drivers and protocol tasks, but the specification does not establish how your application will perform under load. Measure your own firmware if encryption, logging, displays, audio processing or a large user interface will run alongside Matter.

What the C6 does not solve automatically

An integrated radio does not remove the need for a Thread Border Router in the user’s network. A Thread endpoint still needs compatible network infrastructure to reach other IP networks and Matter controllers. It also does not guarantee that one C6 is the right gateway chip: all of its 2.4 GHz radios use a shared RF resource, which is a significant limitation when the device must route traffic continuously.

Choose ESP32-S3 for a Matter-over-Wi-Fi product with demanding peripherals

Feature-rich user interfaces and media

The S3 is a strong candidate when Matter is only one part of a larger Wi-Fi product. Espressif’s comparison lists a dual-core 240 MHz Xtensa LX7 high-performance processor, a 17.5 MHz low-power core and expandable PSRAM support. The same table lists USB 2.0 Full Speed, SDIO 3.0 host and parallel display interfaces, and Espressif gives audio, camera, voice-recognition and image-recognition examples for the family.

  • ESP32-C6-DevKitC-1 development board using the universal module ESP32-C6--1 with 16 MB SPIflash
  • ESP32-C6 development board has complete Wi-F, low-power Bluetooth and other functions
  • ESP32-C6--1 uses an onboard PCB antenna, and the module has a built-in ESP32-C6 chip, which has good functionality
  • The ESP32 USB Type-C interface of the ESP32-C6 chip supports USB 2.0 full-speed mode and can also be used as the power supply interface of the development board. It can burn firmware to the chip, communicate with the chip through the USB protocol, and can also be used for debugging
  • ESP32-C6-DevKit most of the pins of the module on the board have been led out to pin headers on both sides. Developers can easily connect various peripheral devices through jumpers according to actual needs. The development board can also be plugged into a breadboard for use

Those interfaces can reduce the amount of companion hardware needed for a touch panel, camera, microphone, local display or USB-connected accessory. They are reasons to evaluate the S3 for a feature-rich Matter-over-Wi-Fi device, not proof that it delivers higher Matter throughput than a C6. Verify the pins, DMA channels, memory bandwidth and board routing on the exact module.

When Wi-Fi is the only required Matter transport

If the finished product will always join Wi-Fi and will not itself be a Thread node, the S3’s lack of integrated 802.15.4 may not matter. You can spend the design budget on memory, user-interface hardware, enclosure integration and application software instead of a Thread radio that the product will never enable.

When a second radio is acceptable

An S3 can participate in a Thread design if you add a separate 802.15.4-capable device or radio and define a suitable host interface. That turns the design into a multi-chip system with extra firmware, antenna, power, layout and certification work. If your only reason for choosing S3 is its processor or USB capability, compare that added complexity with using a C6 endpoint directly.

Border Routers and Zigbee gateways need a different architecture

Why a single C6 can be a poor busy gateway

In the C6, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and 802.15.4 share one 2.4 GHz RF module. Espressif documents time-division multiplexing for this arrangement and warns that increased Wi-Fi or Bluetooth traffic can raise packet loss for Thread or Zigbee routers. A product that occasionally commissions a device has a different traffic profile from a border router that forwards packets continuously while serving a busy Wi-Fi connection.

Read the constraints in the ESP-IDF C6 RF coexistence guide before committing to a single-chip gateway. Antenna placement, channel selection, Wi-Fi duty cycle and the number of attached nodes all affect the practical result, so a prototype should exercise the busiest simultaneous traffic you expect.

The dual-SoC pattern

For a Wi-Fi Thread Border Router or Zigbee gateway, Espressif recommends a dual-SoC solution such as an ESP32-S3 Wi-Fi host paired with an ESP32-H2 802.15.4 radio, with separate antennas. The host handles the IP-facing application and user features while the radio co-processor handles Thread or Zigbee. Espressif documents an S3-plus-H2 reference board in its ESP Thread Border Router hardware-platform documentation.

This architecture is not the generic answer for a single Matter endpoint. It is appropriate when the product must maintain reliable Wi-Fi service and a separate mesh-radio link at the same time, or when the radio and application workloads need independent scheduling and antenna locations.

Check framework support before laying out the board

Matter support depends on the SDK and release you will ship, not only on what the silicon can do. Espressif’s Arduino-ESP32 Matter matrix currently lists the C6 as supporting Matter-over-Thread and marks the S3 as not supporting Matter-over-Thread in that implementation. The matrix is specific to that framework; another SDK, release or integration may expose a different set of targets.

Use the Arduino-ESP32 Matter documentation or the corresponding ESP-IDF and ESP-Matter release documentation for your toolchain. Record the exact SDK version, target chip, commissioning method and required libraries in the project configuration so a later upgrade does not silently change transport support.

A practical selection process

  1. Define the role. Write down whether the board is a Matter endpoint, a Thread Border Router, a Zigbee gateway, or a Wi-Fi host with a separate radio. Do not select a chip until this role is explicit.
  2. Choose the transport. For a Thread endpoint, start with the C6 because 802.15.4 is integrated. For Wi-Fi-only Matter, keep both families in consideration. For a border router, evaluate the dual-SoC pattern first.
  3. List the application workload. Identify displays, cameras, microphones, USB devices, local inference, file storage, protocol bridges and real-time tasks. S3’s dual high-performance cores, PSRAM option and peripheral set may outweigh C6’s extra radios for this class of product.
  4. Map the physical interfaces. Compare the exact SDIO, USB, display and parallel interfaces required by your schematic. A family-level feature list does not guarantee that every module or development board routes the signals you need.
  5. Confirm memory on the chosen module. Check flash and PSRAM population, not just the SoC table. Reserve space for Matter credentials, OTA images, logs and your application before freezing the part.
  6. Verify software support. Build a minimal commissioning sample with the exact SDK release and target board. Confirm that the desired Matter transport, Bluetooth commissioning path and persistent-storage configuration are available.
  7. Test the RF topology. For a C6 gateway, generate simultaneous Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and Thread or Zigbee traffic. For a two-chip design, test the inter-chip link, antenna separation and recovery after either radio resets.
  8. Review certification and production constraints. Check the module’s antenna options, regulatory approvals, pin strapping, boot mode, thermal limits and board revision with the supplier before moving from development hardware to a custom PCB.

Board and module checks that prevent expensive substitutions

A product name such as “ESP32-C6 board” or “ESP32-S3 board” is not a complete specification. Before ordering, verify the following items on the vendor’s current data sheet and schematic:

  • Exact SoC or module designation and silicon revision.
  • Flash capacity and whether PSRAM is fitted, supported and connected to usable pins.
  • Antenna type, connector options, keep-out area and whether a second radio needs its own antenna.
  • Which USB connector is wired to USB-JTAG, native USB or a separate USB-to-serial bridge.
  • Actual pins exposed for SDIO, PARLIO, display, camera, audio and debugging.
  • Power-input range, regulator capacity and current available during Wi-Fi transmission.
  • Boot strapping, reset circuitry and access to logs during commissioning.
  • Board revision and the SDK target name used by your build system.

For a Thread prototype, an ESP32-C6 development board is the direct hardware starting point because the radio is on-chip. For a Wi-Fi product that needs S3-specific interfaces, an ESP32-S3 development board is the relevant starting point. A documented S3-plus-H2 board belongs to the border-router category and should not be treated as a substitute for a one-chip endpoint.

Common mistakes and how to correct them

Mistake: treating Matter as synonymous with Thread

Symptom: A team selects an S3 for a product that must join a Thread mesh, then discovers that the chosen framework does not provide Matter-over-Thread for that target.

Correction: Decide Wi-Fi versus Thread first. Select a C6 or add a separate 802.15.4 radio when Thread is a device requirement.

Mistake: assuming a higher clock means faster Matter

Symptom: A design picks the S3 solely because its listed processor frequency is higher, without measuring memory pressure or interface needs.

Correction: Treat clock and core counts as architectural clues. Benchmark the actual commissioning, encrypted traffic, UI and application workload on representative firmware; no controlled C6-versus-S3 Matter benchmark is established by the cited specifications.

Mistake: using one C6 as an overloaded gateway

Symptom: Thread or Zigbee reliability falls when Wi-Fi throughput, Bluetooth activity or router duties increase.

Correction: Review the coexistence limits and test the worst-case traffic pattern. Move to a separate 802.15.4 radio and Wi-Fi host when sustained simultaneous service is required.

Mistake: assuming every board exposes the family’s headline peripherals

Symptom: The selected board lacks the USB mode, PSRAM connection, display bus or antenna arrangement shown in a family-level comparison.

Correction: Confirm the module schematic, pin map, memory population and board revision before placing a production order.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mistake: freezing hardware before freezing the SDK

Symptom: A later framework update changes target support, commissioning APIs or required memory.

Correction: Build and commission a minimal device with the exact release you intend to maintain, then record that release in the hardware and manufacturing documentation.

Which chip fits common Matter project types?

Project type Preferred starting point Reason Qualification
Battery or mains-powered Matter sensor on Thread ESP32-C6 Integrated 802.15.4 avoids a separate Thread radio. Validate power behavior, antenna design and the target SDK’s Thread support.
Wi-Fi Matter switch or appliance controller C6 or S3 Both are candidates for Matter Wi-Fi. Choose by memory, peripherals, application workload and board availability.
Matter panel with display, USB and local media ESP32-S3 Dual-core processing, expandable PSRAM and listed USB/display-oriented interfaces fit the workload. It remains a Wi-Fi Matter design unless another 802.15.4 device is added.
Wi-Fi Thread Border Router ESP32-S3 host plus ESP32-H2 radio Separate chips and antennas avoid putting all Wi-Fi and mesh-radio work on one shared RF path. Follow the documented reference architecture and validate the inter-chip protocol.
Zigbee gateway with substantial Wi-Fi traffic Dual-SoC architecture Independent radio scheduling is better suited to sustained gateway traffic. A single C6 may be appropriate only after traffic and packet-loss testing demonstrate adequate margins.

Final recommendation

For a Matter-over-Thread endpoint, choose the ESP32-C6 unless a specific application requirement makes a separate radio and a more powerful host worthwhile. Its integrated 802.15.4 support is the decisive difference.

For Matter over Wi-Fi, choose between C6 and S3 by workload: select S3 when dual-core processing, PSRAM, USB, display, camera or audio interfaces are central; select C6 when its low-power profile and additional Thread or Zigbee capability are useful even if the first product variant uses Wi-Fi.
