Escape Launcher is a minimalist, open-source Android launcher built around text instead of app icons. It puts favorite apps on the home screen and opens a separate installed-app list with a swipe. That makes it a distinctive option for people seeking an open-source alternative to Niagara Launcher, but “my new replacement” is a personal preference—not a claim that Escape matches Niagara feature for feature.
What Escape Launcher changes about the home screen
Escape Launcher presents app names as a text list rather than a grid of icons. Favorites sit on the home screen; a swipe opens the broader installed-app list. From there, you can type to search, and F-Droid also describes fuzzy find. Its listing says the keyboard can be configured to appear automatically when opening the app list, reducing the steps between launching the list and entering a search.
In his How-To Geek article, Bertel King describes Escape as his favorite open-source minimalist option when he wants an alternative to Niagara Launcher. He specifically values its typography, spacing, fonts, and color themes. Those are personal impressions, and the best way to judge them is to try the interface on your own device. King’s article describes the text-first approach; F-Droid’s listing documents search and fuzzy find.
Which Escape Launcher features matter most?
F-Droid lists features that go beyond a plain text home screen. Whether they make Escape a suitable minimalist Android launcher for you depends on which options you actually use.

- Please note, this device does not support E-SIM; This 4G model is compatible with all GSM networks worldwide outside of the U.S. In the US, ONLY compatible with T-Mobile and their MVNO's (Metro and Standup). It will NOT work with other CDMA carriers, and it is also not compatible with their MVNO (Visible, Xfinity Mobile, US Mobile, Cricket Wireless, etc).
- Compatibility with certain third-party devices and accessibility accessories, including some hearing aids, may vary depending on manufacturer support, Bluetooth protocols, software compatibility, and regional firmware limitations. For additional hearing aid compatibility information, please refer to Samsung’s official support documentation.
- Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
- Personalization: Themes, fonts, configurable positioning, and widgets let you adjust the look and layout.
- Focus: Screen-time tracking and app-opening countdowns are intended to add awareness or a pause before opening apps.
- App access: Search, fuzzy find, hidden apps, and a separate installed-app list help manage a large collection without displaying every app on the home screen.
- Context: The listing includes weather and support for work apps and Android 15+ private space. Confirm that a feature works with your Android version and chosen build before relying on it.
These are listed capabilities, not a guarantee that Escape provides the same depth or polish as another launcher. In particular, compare the specific features you depend on rather than treating the minimalist presentation as evidence of full feature parity.
Escape Launcher, Niagara, or another minimalist launcher?
The clearest choice is about the home-screen interaction you want. Escape’s text-only list is different from an icon-oriented launcher. If you prefer scanning app names and opening favorites from a short list, that difference may be the point. If you rely on a particular Niagara feature, check whether Escape offers it before switching; King’s article characterizes Escape as less fully featured and says it lacked app renaming when his article was published. That time-specific observation should not be treated as confirmation of the current feature set.

Olauncher is another open-source minimalist option. Its project lists GPLv3 licensing and multiple distribution routes. Olauncher CF says it supports app renaming and extra gestures. These projects are not interchangeable: compare their current feature lists and the build and distribution channel you intend to use. Olauncher’s project and Olauncher CF’s project provide details for those variants.

| Escape Launcher | Text-only favorites on the home screen; swipe to the installed-app list, with typing search and fuzzy find listed. | F-Droid lists themes, fonts, widgets, screen-time tracking, countdowns, and more. Android compatibility, FOSS builds, and installation
Build details matter because the available sources describe different minimum Android versions. F-Droid lists Escape Launcher version 2.3.1-foss, added January 11, 2026, and says it requires Android 8.0 or newer. The project repository states Android 9 as the minimum SDK and describes two variants, with the FOSS build omitting some non-open-source libraries and associated features. These details may refer to different builds or release information; they should not be collapsed into a single compatibility claim. Check the requirement and release notes attached to the exact build you plan to install.

For the F-Droid distribution, the listing recommends using the F-Droid client for update notifications and says its APK is built and signed by F-Droid to correspond to the source tarball. The project repository also describes GitHub release APKs. Distribution channel and variant can affect what you install, so use the listing or release notes for that channel to confirm compatibility and included features.
- Choose a build: Review the F-Droid listing or the project repository and select the distribution and variant you intend to use.
- Check your Android version: Compare your device’s version with the minimum shown for that specific build, rather than assuming the F-Droid and repository details are identical.
- Install and set the launcher: Follow the chosen distribution’s installation instructions, then select Escape Launcher as your home app using your device’s Android settings. Exact menu labels can vary by device maker and Android version.
- Test your routine: Add the apps you use most to favorites, try the swipe to the installed-app list, and check search, keyboard behavior, widgets, and any focus features you plan to use.
How to decide whether Escape is a good replacement
Try Escape if your main goal is a text-only home screen with favorites close at hand and an app list you can search. Before making it your everyday launcher, check the features you rely on—especially any app-management or customization behavior—and confirm that your chosen build supports your Android version. If icons, a specific Niagara feature, or a different gesture workflow is essential, the difference in design may outweigh Escape’s open-source, minimalist appeal.
