Error 0x8096002A in Windows 11 File Explorer—sometimes shown with “The Extraction Operation was not Completed,” “An unexpected error is preventing the archive from being extracted,” or “No error description available”—does not identify one specific cause. Start by checking whether one archive or several fail, then test the format, file, and destination before attempting Windows repairs.

What the error does—and does not—tell you

Windows does not publicly define 0x8096002A as a specific fault. The message is an extraction failure, not proof of a damaged archive, long path, antivirus block, or Windows system-file problem. Microsoft’s support guidance explains supported formats and extraction steps for Windows 11 version 24H2, but does not define this code. Microsoft’s ZIP and unzip instructions are useful for the built-in extractor; community posts and other troubleshooting reports are clues, not universal fixes.

Start with the scope and archive type

Does one archive fail, or do several?

If only one archive fails, focus first on that file: its format, encryption, completeness, or compatibility. If unrelated archives also fail, test a different local destination and check whether the problem is broader. This split narrows the investigation but does not prove the cause.

Identify the format and Windows version

Microsoft says Windows 11 version 24H2 supports ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR in File Explorer. That statement is specific to 24H2; do not assume the same built-in support on every Windows 11 release. If you are unsure of the format, check the file extension or ask the person or site that supplied it.

Check whether it is encrypted

Microsoft says the built-in extraction experience in Windows 11 version 24H2 does not support operations on encrypted archive files. For an encrypted archive, use a compatible archive application and the correct password rather than repeatedly retrying File Explorer. Microsoft names 7-Zip and WinRAR as alternatives for encrypted archives.

Try these 12 checks in order

These are diagnostic checks, not guaranteed fixes. If you already know the archive is encrypted or split into parts, go directly to the relevant check.

  1. Compare one archive with others. Try a different archive you trust, preferably in the same format. If it extracts, investigate the original file; if several unrelated files fail, include the destination and Windows environment in your checks.
  2. Confirm the format and Windows build. Note whether the file is ZIP, RAR, 7z, or TAR, and whether Windows 11 is version 24H2. Built-in format support varies by version.
  3. Rule out encryption. If the archive is password-protected, use a compatible dedicated extractor and enter the correct password. The 24H2 File Explorer experience does not handle encrypted archive operations.
  4. Move the archive to a short local path. Copy it from a network location, removable drive, cloud-synced folder, or deeply nested directory to a simple folder on the PC, such as Downloads. This tests whether the original location contributes to the failure; it is not a documented definition of the code.
  5. Use Extract All for a standard ZIP. In File Explorer, right-click the ZIP file, select Extract All…, then follow the prompts. This is Microsoft’s documented route for extracting a zipped folder.
  6. Choose a short local extraction destination. In the extraction prompt, select a straightforward folder on a local drive instead of a long or unusual path. If the extraction succeeds there, the original destination may be involved.
  7. Check available space and write access. Make sure the destination drive has enough free space and that your account can create files there. Try another local folder or drive if needed; do not assume extra storage is necessary unless space is actually insufficient.
  8. Verify the downloaded file. If the publisher provides a checksum, compare it with the downloaded archive. If the checksum differs, or there is other evidence the download is incomplete or damaged, get a fresh copy from the legitimate source.
  9. Compare ZIP extraction in PowerShell. For a ZIP file only, open PowerShell and run Expand-Archive -LiteralPath "C:pathtoarchive.zip" -DestinationPath "C:pathtoextract", replacing both paths with the actual file and destination. This is a diagnostic comparison, not a method for RAR, 7z, or TAR.
  10. Try a compatible dedicated extractor. Use a trusted archive application that supports the format and encryption state. If it extracts where File Explorer does not, that points to a difference in compatibility or extraction handling; it does not prove the archive is flawless.
  11. Review Windows Security only if there is a specific block. Open Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Protection history and look for an entry tied to the archive or extraction. Do not turn off protection permanently to test this error.
  12. Check the destination drive, then consider Windows repair only for broader symptoms. If other files fail to save or the drive reports errors, investigate that drive. DISM or System File Checker may be relevant when Windows has wider problems, but they will not repair an incomplete archive or resolve unsupported compression, insufficient space, or a destination issue.

Choose the extraction route that fits the archive

Route Format and encryption considerations What a different result can tell you
File Explorer in Windows 11 version 24H2 Microsoft states support for ZIP, RAR, 7z, and TAR; encrypted archive operations are not supported. If the same file fails here but succeeds elsewhere, the extractor or its compatibility may be relevant.
PowerShell Expand-Archive Use this comparison for ZIP files only. A different result helps compare ZIP extraction behavior; it is not a test for other formats.
A compatible dedicated archive application Choose one that supports the archive’s format and encryption. Microsoft identifies 7-Zip and WinRAR as options for encrypted archives. Success outside File Explorer suggests a compatibility difference, not proof that the archive has no damage.

The short-destination test is useful alongside these routes: if extraction works only in a simple local folder, the destination or original file location may be part of the problem.

When Windows repair is warranted

Keep system repair as a later step. If many unrelated Windows functions are failing—not just extraction—run DISM and System File Checker using Microsoft’s supported instructions, Repair a Windows image with DISM and System File Checker. If the issue is limited to one archive, first establish that the file is complete, supported by the extractor, and being extracted to a writable destination with sufficient space.
