If Epson Scan says it cannot communicate with the scanner, start by confirming that the scanner is powered on and that its USB or network connection matches the connection selected in Epson Scan. Restart the computer, then follow the USB or network path below. The message alone does not prove that the scanner hardware has failed.

Before changing drivers, buying a cable, or changing router settings, note the scanner’s exact model, your operating system, and whether you connect by USB or Wi-Fi/Ethernet. Epson’s menus and supported workflows vary by model and software generation.

Start with the two checks that solve the most cases

  1. Check power. Make sure the scanner is switched on, has finished any startup routine, and shows no physical error indicator. Epson’s exact-error guidance says to make sure the product is turned on and securely connected to the computer or USB hub.
  2. Check the physical connection. For USB, reseat the plug at both ends. For a network scanner, confirm that the scanner and computer are connected to the intended network.
  3. Restart the computer. A restart clears a stuck scan service or an incomplete device connection.
  4. Confirm the connection type in Epson’s utility. Epson Scan must be configured for USB when the scanner is connected by USB, or for the network scanner when it is connected over a network.

If the scanner works from another application but not Epson Scan, the problem is more likely to be the Epson Scan connection selection or software state than the scanner’s imaging hardware.

Identify your scanner and connection before changing anything

Look at the label on the scanner or its original documentation for the exact model number. Then identify whether the computer reaches it through a direct USB cable, a USB hub, Wi-Fi, or Ethernet. Do not assume that instructions for one Epson model apply to another: cable connectors, utility names, button workflows, and supported operating systems differ.

Record the operating system and whether you use the original Epson scanning software or Epson Scan 2. The current support page for the exact model is the authoritative place to obtain compatible software and model-specific instructions. If your model is not listed in the utility or your operating system is unsupported, generic connection changes will not resolve the problem.

Fix an Epson Scan USB connection

1. Reseat the cable and bypass unnecessary hardware

Turn the scanner off if its model instructions require that before reconnecting it. Disconnect and reconnect the USB plug firmly at the scanner and computer. If the scanner is attached through a hub, temporarily connect it directly to the computer. Epson’s older scanner guidance warns that multiple hubs can cause communication problems. A direct port is therefore the clearest diagnostic, even when a hub normally works.

Some Epson support instructions describe requirements for a powered hub on a particular product. Treat that as model-specific guidance, not a universal rule for every Epson scanner. If a direct connection works but the hub does not, the hub, its power supply, or the number of devices in the chain is the likely variable.

2. Verify the USB selection in Epson Scan

  1. Open the Epson Scan connection settings. Depending on the software generation, this may be labeled Epson Scan Settings or be available through Epson Scan 2 Utility.
  2. Select the USB connection option rather than a network scanner entry.
  3. Save the setting, close Epson Scan, and open it again.
  4. Run a small preview scan before attempting a large document.

If the utility shows several scanners, select the entry that matches the model physically connected to this computer. An old network entry can make a USB installation appear unavailable, while a USB selection cannot reach a scanner that is only on the network.

3. Check the cable without assuming it is the cause

Inspect the cable for crushed sections, bent connectors, looseness, or intermittent detection when the plug is moved. A damaged or unreliable cable can produce the same communication message as an incorrect setting. However, replacing the cable is not the general fix for this error. Epson’s legacy guidance recommends the cable supplied with the scanner, so verify the exact model’s connector and cable specification before purchasing a replacement.

Do not substitute a cable solely because it fits. Some scanners require a particular USB connector arrangement or reliable data-rated cable, and a charging-only cable will not carry scanner data. If the scanner is consistently detected through a direct connection with a known-good, correctly specified cable, stop treating the cable as the primary suspect.

Fix an Epson Scan network connection

1. Put the computer and scanner on the same reachable network

Epson’s network troubleshooting guidance says the computer and scanner should be connected to the same network, network subnet, or VLAN. A computer on a guest Wi-Fi network and a scanner on the main network may have internet access yet still be prevented from communicating with each other. The same can happen when one device is connected to a separated wireless band or a different VLAN.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check the network name shown on the computer and the scanner’s network status. If the scanner is wireless, move it nearer to the access point temporarily when signal strength may be poor. A weak or unstable link can interrupt discovery even when the scanner appears connected.

2. Review Epson Scan 2 Utility

  1. Open Epson Scan 2 Utility.
  2. Open the scanner or network settings and verify that the network connection is selected.
  3. Run the utility’s scanner search or refresh function, if your model provides one.
  4. If discovery fails but you know the scanner’s IP address, use the utility’s option to add the scanner by IP address.
  5. Save the entry, restart Epson Scan 2, and test with a preview.

Epson identifies firewall interference as one reason discovery may fail. Adding the scanner by IP address can avoid a discovery problem, but it does not bypass a firewall that blocks the actual scan traffic.

3. Check router isolation and security controls carefully

Some access points and routers enable a privacy separator, client isolation, or guest-device isolation. These features deliberately prevent wireless clients from communicating with one another. If the computer and scanner are on the same network name but cannot connect, review the router documentation for such a setting and disable it only when appropriate for your security configuration.

Firewall or antivirus settings on the computer, router, or access point can also interfere with discovery or scanning. Make changes deliberately, preferably by creating an exception for the Epson scanning software or scanner rather than turning protection off permanently. If this is a managed work or school network, ask the administrator to permit communication between the computer and scanner instead of changing policy yourself.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Retry a large scan at a lower resolution

Epson lists a large original scanned at high resolution as a possible cause of a network communication error. Use a small page or preview and choose a lower resolution as a diagnostic. If the smaller job succeeds while the original fails, the network path may be timing out or the scan may be exceeding available memory or transfer capacity. Reduce resolution, scan in sections, or use a direct USB connection for very large jobs.

Recover Epson Scan 2 after an interrupted connection

A network interruption can leave Epson Scan 2 unable to start even after the connection returns. Exit Epson Scan 2 completely and launch it again. If it still will not start, power-cycle the scanner: close the software, switch the scanner off, wait briefly, turn it on, allow it to finish initialization, and then reopen Epson Scan 2.

Some scanner-button workflows require Epson Scan 2 to be running before you press the scanner’s start button. For those models, launch Epson Scan 2 first and then press the button. Other models use a different workflow, so follow the instructions for your exact scanner rather than assuming every button behaves the same way.

Use the symptom to choose the next test

What you observe Most useful next test What the result means
The scanner is completely absent over USB Connect it directly to the computer, reseat the cable, and restart the computer If it appears, the hub arrangement or a stale device state was involved; if it remains absent, verify model-specific software and cable requirements
The scanner works by USB but not over the network Confirm the same network/subnet, then add the scanner’s IP address in Epson Scan 2 Utility The issue is likely discovery, isolation, firewall access, or network configuration rather than the imaging unit
The scanner is listed but a scan fails midway Try a small page at lower resolution A successful small scan points toward transfer limits, signal instability, or a high-resolution network job
Epson Scan 2 will not reopen after a disconnect Exit and relaunch it; if necessary, power-cycle the scanner The software or scanner retained an interrupted session
The scanner button does nothing Start Epson Scan 2 before pressing the button and check the model’s supported workflow The button may depend on the scanning application already running

When reinstalling software is justified

Do not begin by deleting drivers or installing a random package. First confirm the model, operating system, and connection type. If Epson Scan or Epson Scan 2 is missing, reports an unsupported device, or continues to use an obsolete connection entry after the checks above, download the software listed for that exact model from Epson’s official support site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the model-approved package for the operating system, restart when prompted, and then configure the connection again in Epson’s utility. A scanner can be physically reachable yet unusable when the installed software does not support that model or operating-system version. Conversely, reinstalling software will not repair a router isolation rule or a broken USB cable.

What not to change blindly

  • Do not replace the scanner immediately. The error is a communication diagnosis, not proof of failed scanning hardware.
  • Do not buy a generic cable first. Confirm the model’s connector and data-cable specification, and test a direct connection.
  • Do not disable every firewall permanently. Use a targeted exception or an IP-based scanner entry where appropriate.
  • Do not assume internet access proves local connectivity. Guest networks and privacy separators can allow web access while blocking device-to-device traffic.
  • Do not apply button instructions from another model. Epson scanner workflows are not uniform.

A final, model-specific checklist

  1. Write down the scanner model and operating system.
  2. Confirm power and inspect the connection.
  3. Choose the USB or network path that matches the physical setup.
  4. For USB, bypass hubs and verify Epson Scan’s USB selection.
  5. For network, confirm the same network/subnet/VLAN, check signal distance, and review Epson Scan 2 Utility.
  6. If discovery fails, add the scanner’s IP address and check isolation or firewall controls.
  7. If a large scan fails, test a smaller original at lower resolution.
  8. After an interruption, exit and restart Epson Scan 2; power-cycle the scanner if needed.
  9. Use the exact-model Epson support page for current software, cable specifications, and supported workflows.

When these checks do not restore communication, the remaining possibilities include an unsupported software combination, a network policy that an administrator must change, a defective cable or port, or scanner hardware trouble. Model-specific Epson support can distinguish those cases using the scanner’s exact model and operating system.
