Neither signal is a universal winner. EPS estimate revisions tell you whether analysts are changing their expectations for future earnings. Price momentum tells you whether the stock’s prior return direction has persisted. Use revisions to investigate changing fundamentals and momentum to measure continuation in market prices; then test whether either signal adds information after controlling for the other.
Historical studies find predictive information in both signals, but the result depends on the revision formula, forecast horizon, return window, portfolio construction, sample, and trading costs. Published abnormal-return results should not be treated as a forecast of what either signal will earn today.
What the two signals actually measure
EPS estimate revisions
An EPS revision is a change in an analyst’s estimate of a company’s future earnings per share. The calculation is incomplete unless you specify the forecast horizon and the revision’s form. A change to next quarter’s estimate is different from a change to a two-year-ahead estimate. A raw change, such as raising an estimate from $4.00 to $4.20, is also different from a scaled change expressed as a percentage, a change divided by price, or a change standardized against other revisions.

Consensus construction and coverage can materially change the signal. A company with two analysts can produce a very different revision series from one followed by 25 analysts, even when the reported consensus moves by the same amount.

Price momentum
Price momentum is continuation in realized past returns. A basic implementation ranks stocks by their return over a selected lookback window, buys the stronger group and sells or underweights the weaker group. The lookback must be stated, as must any skipped period between the ranking date and the holding period. Research taxonomies commonly illustrate six- or eleven-month prior-return windows, sometimes with a one-month skip; those are examples, not universal settings.
Momentum uses information already reflected in market prices. It does not, by itself, identify what changed in a company’s earnings outlook. Corporate actions, delistings, missing returns, and the choice of universe can all affect the measured signal.
| Comparison axis | EPS estimate revisions | Price momentum |
|---|---|---|
| What changes | Analysts’ estimates of future EPS. State the forecast horizon and whether the revision is raw or scaled. | The stock’s realized past return. State the return window and any skipped month. |
| Information source | Analyst forecasts and updates; coverage and consensus construction matter. | Market prices and returns; corporate actions, return window and universe definition matter. |
| Timing | Can reflect new fundamental information, although analyst responses may lag news. | Observable in prices and can reflect information investors have already acted on. |
| Main caveat | Forecasts can be biased, inconsistent or unavailable for thinly covered companies. | A historical winner can reverse or underperform; past returns do not explain the fundamental change. |
| Fair test | Align forecast horizon, timestamp, revision formula, universe and holding period. | Align prior-return window, skip rule, universe and holding period on the same dates and costs. |
What the published evidence says
Revisions can contain information, but the definition matters
Michael J. Jung, Jessica H. Keeley and Joshua Ronen’s “The Predictability of Analyst Forecast Revisions” (Journal of Accounting, Auditing & Finance, 2019 issue; first published online in 2017) studies two-year-ahead EPS estimates. They report that revisions are correlated with contemporaneous price changes and that a strategy using unscaled revisions earned positive abnormal returns in their sample. Scaled versions did not show the same result. Their conclusion is specific to the data, sample and strategy; it does not establish that every percentage-based revision measure is ineffective or that raw revisions will outperform in a current market.
The authors write, “We find that analyst forecast revisions are predictable and document an implementable strategy for investors.” That statement describes their empirical result, not a promise of future performance. They also report abnormal returns for low-coverage firms and relate that pattern to possible initial mispricing and poorer information environments. Thin coverage can therefore be a useful context variable, but it is not a reason to assume that every lightly followed stock offers an opportunity.
Momentum and earnings surprises have each predicted drift
In “Momentum Strategies” (The Journal of Finance, December 1996), Louis K. C. Chan, Narayanan Jegadeesh and Josef Lakonishok report that past returns and past earnings surprises each predict substantial future-return drift after controlling for the other. Their result supports testing related signals together rather than assuming that a price signal and an earnings signal are identical.

The paper’s quoted conclusion is: “Past return and past earnings surprise each predict large drifts in future returns after controlling for the other.” Earnings surprises are not the same as analyst estimate revisions. A surprise compares reported earnings with an expectation at the announcement; a revision changes the expectation before the result is reported. Post-earnings-announcement drift is another related, but distinct, phenomenon.
Other work finds substantial overlap
A 2006 Journal of Financial Economics study, “Earnings and price momentum,” reports that in its tests the predictive power of past returns is captured by the systematic component of earnings momentum. The authors state: “The predictive power of past returns is subsumed by a zero-investment portfolio that is long on stocks with high earnings surprises and short on stocks with low earnings surprises.” This finding depends on that study’s definitions and design. It is evidence of overlap, not proof that price momentum will always disappear once any earnings variable is added.

Iselin, Park and Van Buskirk, writing in the Journal of Accounting and Economics in February 2021, report that analysts simultaneously revise two related outputs in opposite directions in about 20%–30% of the cases in their sample. That percentage applies to paired analyst outputs in their study, not to all estimate changes. It is a reminder to inspect what an analyst changed, rather than treating every upward EPS revision as a uniformly positive information event.
Research by Low and Tan (International Review of Financial Analysis, 2016) and other analyst-forecast studies documents limitations compatible with optimistic bias and inconsistent outputs. Coverage, incentives, stale estimates and the difference between a genuine information update and a mechanical consensus change all affect interpretation.
Recommendation reactions are not the same as return forecasts
Johnson and Womack’s Management Science study, published online in 2016, compares recommendation changes motivated by earnings-estimate revisions with recommendation changes without such revisions. They report an initial price reaction about 1.3% greater for upgrades and 2.8% greater for downgrades when the recommendation change was motivated by an earnings estimate revision, as described in their study. These are event-reaction differences in that sample, not a general forecast that a revision will produce a particular return over a chosen holding period.

Do revisions add information beyond recent price performance?
Sometimes they can, but the answer is empirical rather than definitional. Price momentum and revisions are related because analysts may update estimates after price-moving news, and prices may move when investors anticipate an analyst update. That creates correlation. Correlation does not tell you whether the second signal adds independent information.
Recommended Free Tools
A useful test has three versions. First, form portfolios on revisions alone and momentum alone. Second, double-sort the same stocks by both signals and examine the four combinations: high revision/high momentum, high revision/low momentum, low revision/high momentum and low revision/low momentum. Third, run a cross-sectional or portfolio regression in which each signal is included together with controls such as size, industry, prior volatility and other variables appropriate to the study. If the revision spread remains after controlling for momentum, it contains information not explained by that momentum definition. If the momentum spread remains after controlling for revisions, momentum adds information. If one disappears, the signals may be measuring the same underlying effect in that design.
Do not infer independence from a single positive result. Changing the revision horizon, scaling rule, momentum lookback or sample period can change the conclusion. A signal can add statistical information but still fail to add investable net returns after turnover, bid-ask spreads, market impact, borrow costs, taxes and implementation delays.
How to define each signal for a reproducible study
Revision definitions
- Forecast horizon: choose a horizon, such as the next fiscal year or two years ahead, and keep it fixed unless the design explicitly compares horizons.
- Revision formula: record the raw change, percentage change or another scaling rule. Do not mix formulas in one portfolio.
- Reference estimate: define whether the measure uses an individual analyst, consensus mean, consensus median or another aggregate.
- Timestamp: use the time the revision was publicly available, not a later database snapshot that could introduce look-ahead bias.
- Coverage: record analyst count and decide how to treat firms with no estimates or only one estimate.
- Direction: specify whether an upgrade is strictly positive, whether unchanged estimates are excluded, and how revisions that cross zero are handled.
Momentum definitions
- Lookback: select and document the prior-return window. Six- and eleven-month examples appear in anomaly research, but neither is a required standard.
- Skip rule: state whether the most recent month is excluded to reduce short-term reversal effects.
- Return construction: use a consistent total-return or price-return definition and adjust for splits, dividends and other corporate actions according to the data source.
- Ranking universe: define exchange, country, market-cap floor, price floor, liquidity rules and treatment of delisted securities.
- Holding period: state whether positions are held for one month, six months or another interval, and whether portfolios overlap.
How to run a fair revision-versus-momentum comparison
- Set the information date. At each rebalance date, freeze the data that an investor could actually have known. A revision posted after the market close belongs to the next tradable session, not the earlier date.
- Define one universe. Apply the same eligibility rules, geography, listing status, liquidity screen and delisting treatment to both signals. Do not let momentum use a broad universe while revisions are measured only on large, covered companies without reporting that difference.
- Build the revision signal. Calculate the chosen change in EPS estimates for the specified horizon. Keep raw and scaled versions as separate tests and record analyst coverage.
- Build the momentum signal. Calculate the specified prior return, apply the documented skip rule and rank stocks on the same rebalance dates.
- Use identical portfolio mechanics. Apply the same number of groups, weighting method, rebalance frequency, holding period and position limits. Equal-weighted and value-weighted results answer different questions, so label them separately.
- Measure before and after costs. Report the long-short or long-only return, volatility, drawdown, turnover and risk-adjusted statistics. Subtract realistic commissions, spreads, market impact, borrow expense and other costs; a gross historical spread is not an investable result.
- Control for overlap. Compare standalone portfolios, double-sorted portfolios and a combined model. Test whether each signal’s coefficient or portfolio spread survives when the other is included.
- Check robustness. Repeat across reasonable horizons, subperiods, industries, market-cap groups and coverage levels. A result that exists only under one narrowly chosen formula should be described as fragile.
- Prevent selection bias. Include failed and delisted companies where the data permit, avoid using revised historical estimates that were unavailable at the time, and keep the sample-selection rule fixed before reviewing outcomes.
- Separate discovery from validation. A specification chosen because it performed best in the same historical sample is subject to data mining. Reserve a later period or another market for an out-of-sample check.
When each signal is most useful in research
Use revisions when the question is about changing expectations
Start with revisions when you want to know whether the earnings outlook is improving or deteriorating before the next report. They are especially informative when the horizon, direction and reason for the change are clear, coverage is adequate for a meaningful consensus, and the estimate date is known. Examine the size of the change relative to the company’s prior estimate, the dispersion among analysts and whether other outputs moved consistently.
A revision is less interpretable when it comes from a single thinly covered analyst, follows a large price move that may already incorporate the news, or conflicts with other analyst outputs. In those cases, treat it as a prompt for fundamental investigation rather than a trading instruction.

Use momentum when the question is about persistent market behavior
Use momentum when you need a transparent, price-based measure of continuation across a defined universe. It is available even when analyst coverage is absent and can be applied consistently across companies. Its weakness is explanatory: a high-return stock may be rising because of improving earnings, a valuation re-rating, a temporary flow or an event that has already passed.
Momentum also requires discipline around reversal risk, trading costs and liquidity. A backtest with a short holding period and high turnover can look attractive before costs and unattractive after them.
Use both when confirmation and disagreement are useful
A practical research screen can classify stocks by the interaction of the signals. High momentum with upward revisions suggests agreement between market direction and changing earnings expectations. High momentum with flat or downward revisions is a disagreement case that merits an explanation: the price may be discounting information not yet reflected in estimates, or momentum may be vulnerable. Low momentum with upward revisions can identify a potential repricing situation, but it can also indicate that analysts are late or that the market rejects their view. Low momentum with downward revisions represents aligned negative information, not an automatic short recommendation.
These categories are research prompts. They do not establish expected returns, and they should not override valuation, balance-sheet, industry or event-specific analysis.

Common mistakes and how to correct them
Calling an earnings surprise a revision
A revision changes an estimate before results are reported. An earnings surprise compares reported EPS with an earlier expectation. Label the variables separately and do not use evidence about post-earnings-announcement drift as if it tested analyst revisions.

Mixing raw and scaled revisions
Raw and scaled revisions can rank companies differently. Jung, Keeley and Ronen found a positive abnormal-return result for an unscaled measure in their study, while scaled versions did not show the same result. Run them as distinct specifications and carry the definition into every table and conclusion.
Using mismatched dates
Comparing a revision measured at the end of a month with a momentum return that includes prices from after that revision creates look-ahead bias. Align the information timestamp, trade date, lookback window and holding period.
Treating a published abnormal return as a current forecast
Historical abnormal returns depend on the market, period, portfolio rule and benchmark used. They demonstrate what occurred under a particular design; they do not establish which signal will perform better today.
Ignoring coverage and analyst behavior
Analyst forecasts can be optimistic, inconsistent or stale. Record coverage and inspect simultaneous changes in other outputs. The 20%–30% opposite-direction figure reported by Iselin, Park and Van Buskirk illustrates why a single headline revision can be misleading when viewed without context.
Comparing gross returns only
Momentum and revision portfolios can have different turnover, liquidity and shorting requirements. A fair comparison reports net results under the same cost assumptions and shows how sensitive the result is to those assumptions.
A concise workflow for everyday stock research
- Write down the exact question: “Are earnings expectations changing?” points to revisions; “Is the prior price direction continuing?” points to momentum.
- Check the revision’s horizon, raw or scaled form, analyst count, timestamp and whether related outputs agree.
- Calculate momentum with a stated lookback, skip rule, adjusted-return series and liquidity screen.
- Compare the two signals on the same date and ask whether they agree, conflict or are unavailable.
- Investigate the reason for disagreement using company disclosures, industry conditions and valuation rather than assuming one signal is correct.
- If the decision is systematic, backtest both signals jointly with identical portfolio rules, realistic costs and an out-of-sample period.
Bottom line
EPS revisions and price momentum answer different questions. Revisions are the better starting lens for changing analyst expectations; momentum is the cleaner lens for continuation in realized returns. Historical evidence supports information in both, while other studies find that earnings-related measures can absorb much of the apparent price-momentum effect. The defensible approach is therefore conditional: define each signal precisely, test them on the same dates and universe, measure overlap, include costs and avoid turning historical findings into a promise about present performance.
