Steam is the better default launcher for most PC players. Its mature library management, documented Steam Cloud synchronization and clear 14-day/under-two-hours refund rule make buying and moving between computers comparatively predictable. Epic Games Store is an excellent second launcher for weekly free games, Epic-only releases, regional promotions and players who want to support its developer revenue terms.
You do not have to choose one permanently. A practical setup is to make Steam your primary library, keep an Epic account for titles and promotions that are only or especially attractive there, and track which store owns each game. The sections below explain where that recommendation changes.

The table describes launcher-level capabilities, not a promise that every game supports every feature. A developer can disable cloud saves, omit Workshop integration or set different refund restrictions for certain products.
Catalog size, exclusives and where games launch
Why Steam feels like a default library
Steam’s main advantage is continuity. Decades of PC releases, free-to-play titles, indie projects and older games appear in one searchable library with a consistent purchase, update and installation workflow. Community reviews, guides, discussion boards, achievements and controller settings are attached to the game page instead of spread across separate services.

That does not mean every PC game launches on Steam. Publishers can choose another store, use their own launcher, or release on several stores with different dates. Some games also require a separate publisher account after you install them. Steam remains useful in those cases as the place that tracks the purchase and starts the game, but it cannot remove a second-account requirement imposed by the publisher.
What Epic adds to the catalog
Epic Games Store’s 2025 review, published by Epic Games in 2026, reports more than 6,000 games and 317 million-plus total PC players. Epic also hosts releases that are exclusive or timed-exclusive to its storefront. If a particular game is sold only through Epic during its launch window, the choice is practical rather than philosophical: you need an Epic account to buy and play it.
Exclusivity periods change, and a game that is Epic-only today may appear on another store later. Check the current publisher announcement before delaying a purchase solely on the assumption that an alternative version is imminent.
Choosing by catalog rather than launcher loyalty
- Choose Steam when you want the broadest chance of finding older PC games, community fixes, Workshop content or a long-running library in one place.
- Choose Epic when the game is exclusive there, the regional price is materially lower, or an Epic promotion makes the total cost better.
- For a multiplayer game, verify that the title’s cross-play and account systems work across storefronts. The launcher used for purchase does not by itself determine whether players on other platforms can join.
Total price: sales, coupons, rewards and free games
Compare the checkout total, not the advertised discount
Both stores run seasonal sales and publisher promotions. Compare the final price in your country after tax, currency conversion, coupons and any store-credit reward. A game can have the same list price on both stores but a different checkout total because a coupon or regional pricing table applies on only one storefront.
Epic highlights regional pricing and payment support as part of its store proposition. Steam also uses regional pricing, but each publisher sets the actual price. Prices can change without notice, so a comparison is only valid at the time you are ready to buy.
Epic Rewards and promotional credit
Epic Rewards can return a portion of eligible spending as account credit. The rate and eligible transactions are governed by the current program terms, so treat the displayed reward as store credit rather than a cash discount. Credit is useful if you expect another Epic purchase; it has little value if the game will be your only transaction there.
The Free Games Program
Epic’s strongest cost advantage is its recurring giveaway program. Epic says claimed weekly games remain in the user’s library, even after the promotion ends. You must claim a title while the offer is active and retain access to the Epic account; merely installing a game is not required.

Epic’s 2025 Year in Review reports 662 million titles claimed through the Free Games Program. That figure counts claims, not unique people or hours played, but it demonstrates why maintaining an Epic account can be worthwhile even for someone who buys most paid games on Steam.
- Sign in to the Epic Games Store during the giveaway period.
- Open the Free Games section and review the offer’s end time, age rating and platform requirements.
- Complete the no-cost checkout so the title appears in your library.
- Install it later if desired; claiming, rather than downloading, preserves the entitlement.
When a free game is not really free to play
A claimed title can still require a separate publisher account, an online subscription, a large download or hardware that your PC does not meet. Read the store page for those requirements before assuming that claiming guarantees immediate play.
Cloud saves and moving between PCs
Steam Cloud: the clearest continuity feature
Valve describes Steam Cloud as “an easy and transparent remote file storage system for your game.” For a supported title, Steam uploads configured save files and downloads them on another computer signed in to the same account. That makes a desktop-to-laptop move or a Steam Deck-to-PC transition much less manual.
Steam Cloud is configured per game, not guaranteed globally. A developer decides which files synchronize, and a title can implement the feature incorrectly or omit it. Before switching machines, open the game’s Properties page, select the General section and check whether Steam Cloud is enabled. After playing offline, allow Steam to reconnect and finish synchronization before closing the client.

Handling a Steam Cloud conflict
- Read the conflict dialog’s timestamps and file locations instead of selecting randomly.
- Keep the newer local save if you know that computer contains your latest progress; choose the remote copy if the other machine is newer.
- If the choice is unclear, copy both save folders to a separate backup location before deciding.
- Launch the game and verify the expected character, campaign or settings before deleting any backup.
Cloud storage is synchronization, not a complete backup strategy. It can replicate an unwanted overwrite or a corrupted save, so periodic local backups remain sensible for games with valuable progress.
Epic cloud saves
Epic supports cloud saves for selected games, but implementation is title-specific. Look for the cloud-save setting in the Epic launcher and confirm support on the game’s store or support page. A game may synchronize on one storefront and not another, or use a publisher account that has its own save system. If cross-device progress matters, test with a small save before replacing your primary computer.
Refund policies and purchase risk
Steam’s published baseline
Valve’s Steam Refunds policy, last updated 23 April 2024, says you can request a refund for nearly any purchase. For a standard game purchase, the usual rule is that the request must be made within 14 days and the game must have less than two hours of playtime. Valve generally issues an approved refund within a week.

The rule is a baseline, not a guarantee for every transaction. Downloadable content, in-game purchases, gifts, pre-orders, bundles and purchases made outside Steam can have additional conditions. Submit the request through Steam Support, select the transaction and explain the reason. If you exceed the normal window because of a technical problem, you can still ask; Valve may review the circumstances, but approval is discretionary.
Epic refund decisions
Epic also provides a refund process, but eligibility can vary by product type, purchase method, account region and whether the item is marked self-refundable. Open your account’s transactions or the store’s support flow and read the terms attached to that purchase. Do not assume that Steam’s 14-day/two-hour standard automatically applies on Epic.
How to reduce regret on either store
- Check system requirements and operating-system support before buying.
- Read recent user reports for controller, launcher and server problems.
- Install and test a demanding game early enough to remain inside the applicable refund window.
- Keep receipts and note whether the purchase was made with wallet credit, a coupon or a third-party key, because those details can affect the remedy.
Family sharing and multiple users
Steam Families
Steam offers family-library features through Steam Families. Eligible members can access shared games from the family group while keeping their own saves and achievements. Availability and behavior depend on the game, publisher permissions and Steam’s current family rules; some titles cannot be shared, and simultaneous use of one copy is restricted.
Steam Families is best viewed as a convenience for people in one household, not as a way to buy one copy for an unlimited number of unrelated accounts. Review the current in-client rules before reorganizing a large library.
Epic’s limitation
Epic Games Store does not offer account-to-account library sharing or a family-sharing system. A game purchased on one Epic account stays tied to that account. For a household with separate player profiles, each person should understand that a second purchase may be required.

Steam’s mature ecosystem
Steam combines friends, text and voice communication, game invites, achievements, reviews, discussion forums, guides, screenshots and the Steam Workshop where a developer enables it. Workshop support can turn mod installation and updates into a one-click subscription, although complex mods may still require manual load-order or compatibility work.
Controller configuration and handheld-oriented features are another Steam strength. Games can expose community layouts, and Steam’s interface is designed to work across desktop PCs and supported handheld hardware. The experience still varies by title, anti-cheat system and controller implementation.

Epic’s social direction
Epic’s 2025 review announces work on community spaces, profiles, private messaging, voice chat and game-independent parties. These are roadmap announcements for 2026, not evidence that every planned feature is already available. Treat the current launcher interface as the source of truth for what your account can use today.
Epic can be the better choice when your friends already organize around Epic accounts, Fortnite-linked social features or an Epic-exclusive game. For mod-heavy single-player games, check whether the developer provides its own mod manager or directs players to an external community, because Epic does not match Steam Workshop coverage across the catalog.

Both launchers provide a straightforward path on a supported Windows gaming PC. Steam additionally has an official Linux client and deep integration with SteamOS-based handhelds, including controller-focused interfaces and compatibility tooling. That does not make every Windows game work perfectly on Linux; anti-cheat, launchers and codecs remain game-specific concerns.
Epic’s native desktop launcher focus is Windows and macOS. Linux users generally rely on community compatibility layers rather than an official Epic Linux client, and results vary by game and anti-cheat technology. If Linux or a handheld is central to your setup, check the individual game’s compatibility reports before choosing a storefront.
Installation overhead matters when you own games on both stores. Each launcher maintains its own downloads, updates, overlay and friends list. You can point a launcher at an existing game folder in some cases, but moving files between stores does not transfer ownership or guarantee that the other launcher will recognize the installation.

Epic’s current distribution terms advertise 100% of the first $1 million in annual net revenue per product, per year. After that threshold, the standard split is 88% to the developer and 12% to Epic. Epic also advertises an audience of more than 295 million users.

Epic’s 2025 store review reports 78 million monthly active PC users, 317 million-plus total PC players, $1.16 billion in PC spending and 2.78 billion hours spent in third-party games. These are Epic-reported platform figures for 2025, published in 2026; they are not directly comparable to a Steam user or revenue figure in this article because an equivalent current Steam dataset is not provided here.

A higher developer share can influence where an independent studio launches, how it prices a game, or whether it funds an Epic promotion. That is a legitimate reason to buy on Epic when the player experience and price are otherwise acceptable. It does not automatically mean Epic games receive better support, and it does not make Steam’s community and continuity features irrelevant.
Which launcher should you use in common situations?
You want one dependable primary library
Use Steam. The combination of Steam Cloud on supported games, a clearly documented refund baseline, mature discovery tools and family features reduces the number of exceptions you must remember.
The game is Epic-exclusive or substantially cheaper there
Use Epic for that purchase, then add a shortcut or non-Steam game entry if you want a unified launch interface. Ownership, achievements, updates and cloud-save behavior still remain governed by Epic and the game’s own systems.
You mainly want free games
Maintain an Epic account and claim the weekly offers. Install only the titles you intend to play; the rest can remain in the library without consuming drive space.
You frequently switch between a desktop and a laptop
Prefer Steam for games with confirmed Steam Cloud support. For Epic purchases, verify cloud-save support individually and keep a manual save backup for important games.
You share a household library
Steam is the only one of these two stores with a family-library feature. Confirm that the specific games you want to share permit it. Epic requires each account to own its games independently.
You develop or publish a PC game
Evaluate audience, tools, support, regional reach and net revenue together. Epic’s 100% first-$1-million terms may be financially attractive, while Steam’s established discovery and community systems may improve reach for genres that depend on reviews, Workshop content or an existing PC audience. A multi-store launch can maximize reach but adds testing, support and entitlement complexity.
A low-friction two-launcher setup
- Create and secure both accounts with unique passwords and multi-factor authentication.
- Set Steam as the default place for games where cloud saves, Workshop support or family access matter most.
- Install Epic only when you claim a free title, buy an Epic-exclusive game or receive a meaningful price advantage.
- Keep a simple note of the store, publisher account and save location for each installed game.
- Enable cloud-save options per game, then confirm a successful sync after the first session.
- Before uninstalling a launcher, export or back up saves and verify that the game does not require that launcher to authenticate.
- Use desktop shortcuts or a library aggregator only for convenience; they do not merge purchases, achievements, refund policies or cloud services.
Bottom line
Steam is the safer all-purpose choice for most PC players because its library workflow, Steam Cloud documentation, refund baseline, family tools and community ecosystem are unusually mature. Epic Games Store earns a permanent place alongside it when weekly giveaways, Epic-only releases, regional pricing, Rewards or developer-friendly revenue terms provide a concrete benefit. Running both is often the most useful answer: buy each game where the price, access and support fit your actual needs, while treating saves and ownership as store-specific until you verify otherwise.
