Epic Games Store giveaways and Steam’s free games offer different kinds of access. Claim an Epic promotional game during its offer window and it stays in your library; a Steam free-to-play game is free to download and play, while a Steam free weekend gives only temporary access. Steam also documents more built-in library organization tools, including collections and shelves.
What “free” means on each store
Epic Games Store giveaways: claim during the offer
Epic says a promotional free game remains in your library after it is no longer offered to new customers, provided you claim it within the stated offer period. Epic describes the result as a library entitlement; it is not the same as owning the game outright. Its FAQ says a claimed game remains in your library to play after the promotion ends.
Epic Support currently describes a weekly free game available for seven days and says two-factor authentication is required to claim it. The precise offer and requirements can change, so check the live Free Games page and its countdown before claiming rather than assuming every promotion follows the same schedule.

Steam defines free-to-play games as downloadable and playable without a subscription or credit card. The game may still offer optional in-game purchases, and some account limitations can apply. Steam’s support page explains the category. Free-to-play is an ongoing access model for the listed title, not a limited-time giveaway claim.

Steam free weekends: temporary access
A free weekend lets you play a title for a limited period, not claim a permanent copy. Steamworks documentation says continued play after the event ends requires purchasing the full game. Check the event’s end time and any purchase offer on the game’s Steam page; having played during the event does not convert it into a lasting library license. Sign in to the Epic account where you want the game listed. If prompted, complete the required two-factor authentication.

Use the offer’s claim or checkout flow before the stated deadline. A download is not necessary to claim the promotion; the key action is completing the claim while it is available.

After claiming, check your Epic library to confirm the game appears. Epic says a claimed promotional game remains there after the free offer ends.
If you miss the deadline, Epic Support’s answer is that the expired promotion cannot be claimed for free afterward. You can still look for another promotion or purchase the game, but do not assume the next offer will include the same title. See Epic’s support answer about missed giveaways.

How library organization differs
Steam’s documented organization tools
Steam’s library supports sorting, hiding games, featuring titles, shelves, and collections. These options help when a library grows: use a collection to group games by a purpose such as “play next,” or a shelf to keep a chosen set visible. Exact client labels and layouts can vary as Steam updates its interface. Valve’s Steam Support guidance covers library organization and missing-game checks.
Epic: confirm the account and library entry
If a claimed Epic game is absent, first verify that you are signed in to the same Epic account used to claim it. Epic lists being in the wrong account as a common reason games appear missing or unfamiliar. Its missing-games support page provides further checks.

When a game seems missing

Steam: Check whether the game is hidden, and clear or adjust library filters that may exclude it. A title can be in the account library without appearing in the current filtered view.

Epic: Check the signed-in account before assuming a claim failed. Then consult Epic’s missing-games guidance for account and library troubleshooting.

Non-Steam shortcut: Adding an installed game from elsewhere to Steam creates a shortcut in the Steam client, not a Steam license. It does not provide Steam updates or prove ownership on the Steam account.
