Short answer: Epic’s guidance separates your Epic Games display name from your console identity. On PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile, supported Epic games such as Fortnite use your Epic account display name. On PlayStation, they show your PlayStation account display name (your PSN Online ID), while Xbox shows your Xbox gamertag. Renaming the Epic account does not rename either console identity.
This distinction explains why two people in the same Fortnite party can see different names for you depending on the device you are using. The details below follow Epic Games Support guidance for Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League; other games can implement account names differently.

The name other players see by platform
| Platform | Name Epic says appears in its supported games | Account that controls it | Where to check or rename |
|---|---|---|---|
| PC or Mac | Epic Games display name | Epic Games account | Epic account settings; rename there |
| Nintendo Switch | Epic Games display name | Epic Games account linked to the game | Epic account settings; a separate Nintendo nickname is not the name Epic says appears in these games |
| Mobile | Epic Games display name | Epic Games account | Epic account settings; rename there |
| PlayStation | PlayStation account display name or PSN Online ID | PlayStation Network account | PlayStation account settings; changing Epic does not change it |
| Xbox | Xbox gamertag | Xbox account | Xbox account settings; changing Epic does not change it |
Epic describes PC, Nintendo, and mobile as always displaying the Epic account display name in the games covered by its linked-account guidance. Its separate Fortnite guidance says the PlayStation or Xbox name is the console gamertag or account name. Treat this as a platform rule for those supported games, not a guarantee about every game installed on a console.
Why one person can have several visible names
Linking a PlayStation or Xbox account to Epic connects the accounts for game access and progression; it does not merge their naming systems. Your Epic account retains one display name, and each console account retains its own public identity. A Switch player and a PlayStation player can therefore enter the same Fortnite session while seeing different labels for the same person on different devices.

The visible label follows the platform on which the game is currently running. If you play Fortnite on a PC, the lobby uses the Epic display name. If you later launch it on PlayStation, the lobby uses the PSN Online ID instead. Signing into the same Epic account does not force the console to adopt the Epic label.
What appears on each device
PC and Mac
On a computer, Epic says the game uses the display name stored on your Epic Games account. This is the name to review if a friend on PC reports seeing an unexpected label. The computer’s operating-system account name is not the relevant identity in Epic’s guidance.
Nintendo Switch
Epic explicitly groups Nintendo with PC and mobile: the supported game displays the Epic account display name. A Nintendo profile nickname may exist separately, but Epic’s guidance does not identify that nickname as the in-game name for the games covered. Check the Epic account linked to the Nintendo profile when you need to identify or change what other players see.

Mobile play also uses the Epic account display name. Changing a phone or tablet profile name, Apple or Google account label, or device owner name is not the same as changing the Epic display name. The account signed into the game is the one to inspect.
PlayStation
On PlayStation, Epic says the name shown is your PlayStation account display name, commonly called the PSN Online ID. It is controlled by PlayStation Network, not by the Epic display-name field. As a result, an Epic rename can appear to work on a linked account while PlayStation players continue to see the previous PSN identity.
Xbox
On Xbox, the visible identity is the Xbox gamertag. Epic’s account display-name setting does not replace that gamertag. If Xbox users see a name you no longer want to use, the change must be made through the Xbox account rather than through Epic’s website.
Epic display name, PSN Online ID, gamertag and Nintendo nickname are not interchangeable
These labels describe different account fields, even when they identify the same human. “Epic Games display name” means the name stored in Epic account settings. “PSN Online ID” or PlayStation account display name means the identity supplied by PlayStation Network. “Xbox gamertag” means the Xbox account identity. A Nintendo profile nickname is separate from the Epic field, but Epic’s guidance says Nintendo gameplay in the covered titles uses the Epic name.
That vocabulary matters when asking a friend to find you. “Search my Epic name” points to the Epic account identity. “Find my PlayStation profile” points to the PSN Online ID. “Add me on Xbox” points to the gamertag. Using the wrong term can lead you to edit the wrong account or conclude that a rename failed when the game is simply showing another platform’s identity.

How to identify the name currently in use
Use Epic’s linked-account page
- Sign in to your Epic Games account.
- Open Account.
- Select Linked Accounts.
- Review the display name listed for each connected platform account.
Epic says this page lists the display name associated with each linked account. It is useful when you cannot remember which console identity is connected, but it does not change the rule about which name appears during play: the active platform determines the visible label.
Check the in-game lobby
Launch the game on the device you want to diagnose and look at the lobby. Epic says the platform display name is visible there; in Fortnite, it appears above the character. This is the most direct check because it shows the label the game is presenting on that platform, rather than a name stored in a different account portal.
Ask a friend to confirm the platform
If reports conflict, first establish where both players are playing. A friend on PC or Switch should be seeing the Epic display name, while a friend viewing you through PlayStation or Xbox may be seeing your console identity. Compare the lobby result on your device with the observer’s platform before changing any account.

The Linked Accounts page is an account-mapping tool. It helps you identify which Epic account is connected to each listed platform account and shows the associated display names. It does not promise that every connected platform will render the same name in a game. In particular, a PlayStation or Xbox connection can be correctly linked while the game still displays the PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag on that console.
Use the page to answer “Which accounts are connected?” Use the lobby to answer “What name is being rendered right now?” Those are related but different questions. If the page shows the intended Epic name and the console lobby shows a different label, that difference is consistent with Epic’s platform rules rather than proof of a broken link.
Changing the Epic Games display name
Epic’s instructions require a verified email address and limit display-name changes to once every two weeks. The restriction applies to the Epic display name, not to a PlayStation Online ID or Xbox gamertag.
- Sign in to the Epic Games account used by the game.
- Open the account settings page.
- Locate the display-name field.
- Enter the new name and follow the confirmation prompt.
- If Epic requests verification, complete the email verification before expecting the new name to appear.
After the change, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile sessions covered by Epic’s guidance use the new Epic label. The two-week interval means you should check spelling, capitalization, and the intended account before confirming; another correction may not be available immediately.

If the email is not verified, finish that requirement before troubleshooting the name itself. Also confirm that you signed into the Epic account actually used by the game. Editing a different Epic account can produce a perfectly valid rename that has no effect on the profile you are playing.

- An Epic Games account is required to redeem an Epic Games Store Card code
- If playing on a console platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch or Mobile) you need to link your Epic Games account to that gaming platform (one time) to redeem your gift card code
- The 16 digit code on the back of the card WILL NOT work if redeemed directly through your gaming platform (PlayStation Network, Xbox Live, Nintendo Switch, Mobile, etc.)
- Note: Nintendo devices do not support Fortnite Shared Wallet, so V-Bucks purchased using your account balance will not show up on your Nintendo device. However, if you purchase items in the web Item Shop — or another platform where you play Fortnite — those items will be available in your Locker across all platforms.

Changing the PlayStation or Xbox name
PlayStation
Because PlayStation players see the PSN Online ID or PlayStation account display name, use the account-management controls provided by PlayStation Network. An Epic account rename cannot substitute for that process. PlayStation’s current labels and availability can change, so follow the options shown in your regional PlayStation account settings.
Xbox
Because Xbox players see the gamertag, use the Xbox account controls for the signed-in profile. Changing the Epic display name will leave the gamertag untouched. Confirm that you are editing the Microsoft/Xbox account actually linked to the game, especially when a console has more than one profile.
Epic’s support guidance directs players to the respective platform websites for these console-name changes rather than offering a console rename inside Epic account settings. Platform-specific rules, availability, and any prompts are therefore determined by PlayStation or Xbox.
A practical decision guide
| What you want to change | Setting to edit | Who will see the result |
|---|---|---|
| The name shown to PC players | Epic Games display name | Players viewing the supported game on PC or Mac |
| The name shown to Switch players | Epic Games display name | Players viewing the supported game on Nintendo Switch |
| The name shown to mobile players | Epic Games display name | Players viewing the supported game on mobile |
| The name shown while you play on PlayStation | PlayStation account display name or PSN Online ID | Players seeing your PlayStation session |
| The name shown while you play on Xbox | Xbox gamertag | Players seeing your Xbox session |
If your goal is one consistent name across every platform, you must consider both account layers. Updating only Epic covers the PC, Switch, and mobile cases described by Epic; it does not overwrite either console identity.
Worked examples: the same player, different labels
Suppose your Epic display name is “SkyPilot,” your PSN Online ID is “BlueHarbor,” and your Xbox gamertag is “Northwind.” When you play Fortnite on PC, Epic’s rule means the game uses “SkyPilot.” When you switch to PlayStation, the visible name becomes “BlueHarbor.” On Xbox, it becomes “Northwind.” None of those observations contradicts the others; each is tied to the platform supplying the name.
If you change “SkyPilot” to “SkyPilot2,” PC, Switch, and mobile sessions use the new Epic name. PlayStation observers can still see “BlueHarbor,” and Xbox observers can still see “Northwind,” until those platform accounts are changed separately. Conversely, changing the PSN Online ID affects the PlayStation identity but does not rename the Epic field used on PC, Switch, or mobile.
Why your Fortnite name may look different from your Epic name
You changed Epic while playing on a console
The change may be genuine but invisible to console observers. PlayStation and Xbox continue to present their own account names, so check the lobby on a PC, Switch, or mobile device to verify the Epic change and the console lobby separately.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsYou changed a console name but expected Epic to change
The reverse situation also occurs. A new PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag affects the console identity, while the Epic display name remains unchanged for PC, Switch, and mobile sessions. Check the Epic account settings if those players still report the old label.

You are signed into a different Epic account
Epic’s linked-account page can reveal which display name is attached to each connected account. Compare the account shown there with the email and platform profile you intended to use. Avoid unlinking accounts merely to correct a name; first identify the active connection and the account that owns the display name.
The observer is looking at a different platform identity
Ask whether the other player is on PlayStation, Xbox, PC, Switch, or mobile. Two accurate observations can appear contradictory when they come from different platforms because each platform follows a different naming source.
You expected the Nintendo nickname to appear
Epic’s guidance groups Nintendo with PC and mobile for the supported games. Therefore, changing or checking only a Nintendo profile nickname does not answer which Epic name the game is using. Inspect the Epic account linked to the Nintendo profile instead.

When other players appear as “Player”
Fortnite support describes a privacy option named Hide Other Display Names During Regular Gameplay. When enabled, names of players outside your party or squad are replaced with “Player”; disabling it allows those names to appear. This setting changes what is displayed during gameplay, not the underlying Epic, PlayStation, or Xbox account name.
Epic’s available support wording for this option is older than its newer account-name guidance, so menu wording or placement may have changed. If names are hidden, search the current Fortnite settings for the corresponding privacy or gameplay display option and verify whether it is enabled. Do not infer from a “Player” label that someone renamed an account or that the linked account is broken.
How the distinction affects Fortnite parties
Names can differ within one cross-platform party without indicating a matchmaking or account error. A player using a PC may be identified by an Epic display name, while another participant viewing the same person from PlayStation may see the PSN Online ID. The account link still matters for access and cross-platform play, but the label is rendered according to the active platform.
For moderation, friend requests, or voice-chat coordination, confirm both the visible name and the platform. If someone asks you to search for an Epic display name, use the Epic account identity; if they ask you to find a console profile, use the PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag they actually see.

Common mistakes to avoid
- Changing the Epic display name and expecting a PlayStation or Xbox rename.
- Changing a PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag and expecting PC, Switch, or mobile players to see that console name.
- Assuming a Nintendo profile nickname controls the supported game’s visible name.
- Checking only the Epic website instead of the lobby on the platform being diagnosed.
- Ignoring the verified-email requirement or the once-every-two-weeks Epic limit.
- Unlinking an account before confirming which Epic and platform accounts are active.
- Treating “Player” as an account name instead of checking Fortnite’s hide-display-names setting.
- Applying Fortnite’s behavior automatically to an unrelated title.
Scope and limits of this rule
Epic’s linked-account instructions cover Fortnite, Fall Guys, and Rocket League, and its Fortnite support pages explain the console-versus-Epic difference. The article does not establish a universal naming rule for every game on PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, PC, or mobile. A third-party game may show its own account name, a platform name, or a combination.

For a supported Epic title, rely on the platform-specific behavior above. For another game, check that game’s own account and privacy documentation before changing a name. The fact that an Epic account is linked does not, by itself, prove which label another title will display.
Fast troubleshooting checklist
- Identify the device on which the game is running and the device used by the person viewing the name.
- Look at the in-game lobby; in Fortnite, check the name above the character.
- Open Epic account settings and then Linked Accounts to see the connected display names.
- If the session is on PC, Switch, or mobile, check the Epic display name.
- If the session is on PlayStation, check the PSN Online ID or PlayStation account display name.
- If the session is on Xbox, check the Xbox gamertag.
- Before changing Epic, verify the email and remember the once-every-two-weeks limit.
- If names read “Player,” inspect Fortnite’s hide-display-names setting instead of changing an account name.
- Do not assume a result in one game applies to every game on the same console.
Frequently Asked Questions
What name does Fortnite show on PC?
Epic says supported games on PC and Mac show the Epic Games account display name.
What name does Fortnite show on Nintendo Switch?
Epic groups Nintendo with PC and mobile: the supported game shows the Epic account display name, not a separate Nintendo nickname.
Why is my Fortnite name different on PlayStation?
PlayStation uses the PlayStation account display name, also called the PSN Online ID. Linking that account to Epic does not make it use the Epic display name.
Why is my Fortnite name different on Xbox?
Xbox shows the Xbox gamertag. Changing the Epic display name does not change the gamertag.
Where can I see which accounts are linked?
Sign in to Epic, open Account, and select Linked Accounts. The page lists the display name associated with each connected account.
Where does Fortnite show the active name in-game?
Epic says the platform display name is visible in the game lobby; in Fortnite, it appears above the character.
How often can I change my Epic display name?
Epic’s support instructions allow a change once every two weeks and require a verified email address.
Why do I see “Player” instead of another person’s name?
Fortnite’s “Hide Other Display Names During Regular Gameplay” option can replace names outside your party or squad with “Player.” That is a display setting, not an account rename.
Will changing my Epic name rename my PSN Online ID or Xbox gamertag?
No. Those console identities must be changed through the respective PlayStation Network or Xbox account controls.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: For Epic’s supported games, PC, Nintendo Switch, and mobile use the Epic Games display name. PlayStation uses the PSN Online ID, and Xbox uses the Xbox gamertag. Check the lobby and Epic’s Linked Accounts page to identify the active identity, then edit the account that actually controls the name you want to change.
