Bloomberg reported on October 12, 2026, that Epic Games delayed an unannounced shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters and told developers to adopt an “AI first” production model. The report says the game had been slated for March and that no new date had been communicated. Epic has not publicly confirmed those project details or the reported schedule in the material available here; its statement to Bloomberg described AI-accelerated development led by Epic developers.

What Bloomberg reported about the delay

Bloomberg’s October 12, 2026, report described an unannounced shooter featuring Marvel and Star Wars characters as delayed. According to people familiar with the project, who were not authorized to speak publicly, the game had been slated for March, but developers had not been given a new date. The accessible excerpt was reproduced in a Reddit post linking to Bloomberg’s story; the direct Bloomberg page was not accessible.

The report does not establish an official release date, the game’s final scope, or a public announcement of the shooter by Epic or Disney. The reported March target should therefore be understood as a schedule described by Bloomberg’s sources, not a confirmed release date.

What the report says about AI in development

Bloomberg’s excerpt says developers were told to use an “AI first” production model, including tools such as Anthropic’s Claude, with people managing and guiding the work. It quotes a director telling staff, “No more hand-written code,” and saying all art would be “generated with full AI workflows.” These are reported internal remarks. They do not independently establish that the finished game will contain only AI-generated code or art.

Epic communications director Jake Jones told Bloomberg: “We’re embracing AI-accelerated development, led by Epic developers who are the visionaries and creative drivers for everything we do.” That statement confirms Epic’s broad embrace of AI-accelerated development, but it does not confirm each detail in the anonymous-source account or the specific instructions attributed to the director.

How the project fits Epic and Disney’s partnership

Epic and Disney announced a broader collaboration on February 7, 2024: an “all-new open, persistent and social universe” connected to Fortnite. Epic said it would let people play, watch, shop, engage with Disney stories and characters, and create and share experiences. The announcement named Disney, Pixar, Marvel, Star Wars, and Avatar, and said the experience would be powered by Unreal Engine. Epic’s announcement also said Disney would invest $1.5 billion to acquire an equity stake in Epic, subject to customary closing conditions, including regulatory approvals. That announced investment is partnership context, not evidence of the reported shooter’s budget.

Why earlier schedule reporting matters

The reported timing has shifted in coverage. On April 13, 2026, the Los Angeles Times, crediting Bloomberg, reported that the first game in the partnership was on track for a November launch, citing four current and former employees. Epic’s Liz Markman said at the time, “Epic’s timelines are aggressive and always have been. We’ve heavily moved developers onto projects with releases approaching, while smaller prototyping teams are working on further-off projects.” A Disney spokesperson said the companies remained focused on their long-term collaboration and that their work remained unchanged. Those remarks addressed the earlier report, not Bloomberg’s October 12 claims. Read the Los Angeles Times account.

What Epic and Disney have said about AI before

Disney announced on May 16, 2025, that Epic and Disney had used AI technology for an interactive Darth Vader conversational experience in Fortnite. Disney said it was developed in consultation with James Earl Jones’s family, Disney, and Lucasfilm, with attention to transparency, consent, and safety. Disney EVP Sean Shoptaw described that feature as a way to embrace emerging technologies while keeping people at the heart of the creative process. This earlier use of AI is a separate project; it does not verify or endorse the production workflow Bloomberg’s sources attributed to the unannounced shooter. Disney’s announcement.
