An Electronic Product Code (EPC) is a standardized identifier for a physical object. It can identify an individual serialized item, asset, or location; an RFID tag is one possible way to store and capture that identifier. EPC and RFID are not interchangeable terms.
What an Electronic Product Code means
GS1 defines EPC as “an identification scheme for universally identifying physical objects (e.g., trade items, assets and locations) via RFID tags and other data capture techniques.” (GS1, What is an Electronic Product Code (EPC)?, modified 30 May 2025.) The key idea is that EPC names the identification scheme, not a particular tag or scanning device.
In a supply chain or asset system, an EPC gives software a way to refer to an identified object. How that identifier is represented and captured depends on the application.
EPC versus RFID: identifier and carrier
An EPC is the identifier. RFID is a radio-based data-capture technology, and an RFID tag can carry an EPC so a compatible reader can capture it. GS1 also describes EPC use with other data-capture techniques and in text-based data sharing, so an EPC does not necessarily mean that an RFID tag is present.

Tags, readers, frequencies, and air-interface protocols are implementation choices. Hardware must be compatible with the application and the tags being used; the term EPC alone does not establish which equipment is required or interchangeable.
EPC versus GTIN: one item or a product type?
A GTIN identifies a trade-item class—the product type. An EPC can include a serialized GS1 key, allowing a system to distinguish one instance of that product from another. For example, two units of the same product can share the product-class identifier while having different serial identities.

The EPC’s encoded form and the underlying GS1 key are related but not identical concepts. The EPC Tag Data Standard defines EPC formats and how they correspond to GS1 keys and other codes.
How EPCs are represented and used
EPCs can be represented in binary forms suitable for encoding on RFID tags and in text forms used for sharing data between enterprise systems. GS1’s architecture also describes EPC URIs and class or pattern forms. The representation used depends on whether a system is encoding a tag, exchanging an identifier, or describing a set of identifiers.

The EPC Tag Data Standard specifies formats and data carried on EPC-encoded RAIN RFID tags. Encoding details should be taken from the applicable version of that standard rather than inferred from the letters or digits in an identifier.
What EPC does not mean
- Not an RFID tag: The EPC is the identifier; the tag is a possible carrier.
- Not a barcode: EPC is an identification scheme, not a particular printed symbol.
- Not necessarily a unique product type: A GTIN identifies a class, while a serialized EPC can distinguish an individual instance.
- Not proof that a product has been registered: Buying or encoding a tag does not by itself create or register an EPC in a tracking system.
- Not a guarantee of equipment compatibility: Readers and tags must support the relevant radio frequency and protocol for the intended implementation.
When the distinction matters
If you are reading a label, designing an inventory process, or integrating tracking data, first identify which element you are dealing with: the item identifier, its text or binary representation, the tag or other carrier, or the reader and software that capture and use it. Keeping those layers separate makes it easier to choose the right standard and compatible equipment without treating “EPC” as a synonym for “RFID.”
