To change an environment variable in a deployed app, edit it in your hosting provider’s project or service settings, select the environment that needs the value, save, then perform the provider’s required deployment action. A save alone may not change the deployment already serving traffic: Vercel requires a new deployment, Netlify requires a build and deploy, and Render lets you choose whether to rebuild, deploy the existing build, or wait until a later deploy.

Before changing a variable, check its scope and how the app reads it

Confirm the exact project or service and deployment context first. A production deployment may use a different value from a preview, branch, or development deployment. Also check whether the application reads the value at build time or at runtime; a value embedded in frontend build output generally requires rebuilding that output.

  • Match the variable name: Use the exact key the application expects. Environment-variable names are commonly case-sensitive, so check spelling and capitalization.
  • Choose the intended environment: Confirm the setting applies to the deployment that is failing, such as production or a preview deployment.
  • Keep secrets private: Variables exposed to browser code are visible to users. Do not put credentials or other secrets in a client-side variable.

How to update variables on Vercel

  1. In the Vercel dashboard, select the project and open Settings > Environment Variables.
  2. Add a variable by entering its name and value, or use the menu beside an existing variable to edit it.
  3. Select the environment or environments where it should apply, such as Production, Preview, Development, or a custom environment, then save.
  4. Redeploy the project. Vercel says changed values apply to new deployments; an existing deployment retains the values it was created with. See Vercel’s environment-variable instructions.

If the variable is undefined after the redeployment, verify both the selected environment and the name the code reads. Some frameworks also require a public prefix for values used by browser code; Vercel gives NEXT_PUBLIC_ as an example. Treat any such prefixed value as public, not as a place for secrets. See Vercel’s environment-variable documentation and its guidance on adding variables to a project.

How to update variables on Netlify

  1. Open Project configuration > Environment variables.
  2. Find the variable, select it, then choose Options > Edit. Netlify also supports changes through its CLI or API.
  3. Check that the value applies to the deploy context you need; different contexts can use different values.
  4. Build and deploy the project for the change to take effect. Netlify says environment-variable changes require a build and deploy, so editing the setting does not update an already-built deployment by itself. See Netlify’s environment-variable guide.

How to update variables on Render

Open the service’s Environment page and add or edit the key and value. Select the save action according to whether a new build is needed:

Save option What it does When to choose it
Save, rebuild, and deploy Builds the application again and deploys it. Choose this when the updated value must be incorporated during the build.
Save and deploy Deploys the existing build with the updated values. Choose this when the existing build can use the changed value without rebuilding.
Save only Stores the change but does not deploy it. Choose this if you intend to apply the value with a later deployment; the running service will not use it yet.

Render documents these options for its service environment settings. Check the app’s build and runtime behavior before choosing between a new build and deploying the existing one. See Render’s environment variables and secrets documentation.

What to check if the app still sees the old or missing value

  1. Verify the target: Make sure you edited the right project or service and chose the environment or deploy context used by the affected deployment.
  2. Verify the key: Compare the saved name, including capitalization, with the name in the application code.
  3. Complete the deployment action: Redeploy on Vercel, build and deploy on Netlify, or select the appropriate save-and-deploy option on Render. A saved setting may not alter an existing deployment.
  4. Check build-time versus runtime use: If a frontend bundle or other build artifact reads the value during compilation, create a new build so the output contains the updated value.
  5. Check framework naming rules: Some frameworks expect a particular prefix for browser-visible variables. Use the framework’s documented name, and keep secrets out of variables exposed to client-side code.

The steps above apply to the documented Vercel, Netlify, and Render workflows. Other hosts, container platforms, and self-managed servers may inject variables differently. If a platform supplies variables when a process starts, a restart may be needed, but the correct procedure depends on that platform’s documentation.
