Enterprise AI agents are moving beyond answering questions and into bounded business tasks: gathering information across company systems, taking permitted actions, handing work to people, and recording results. The shift is less about giving a chatbot a new label than redesigning a process around connected tools, clear permissions, human review, and measurable outcomes.

What makes an AI agent part of a business workflow?

A chatbot typically responds to a prompt with information or a suggestion. A workflow-oriented agent can take on defined steps in a process: retrieve relevant company information, use approved tools, prepare or update work, and pass the result to a person or another system. OpenAI describes this transition as “moving from assistance to execution,” with agents connected to company context and tools under permissions, governance, and human review (OpenAI, 2025).

For example, an employee might ask an agent to collect information from multiple sources and draft a presentation. That is different from asking a chatbot how to prepare a presentation: the agent is doing workflow work, not merely explaining how a person could do it.

The practical test is whether the system participates in a defined process with explicit tasks, handoffs, and an outcome that can be evaluated. If it only produces conversational answers, it may still be useful, but it has not necessarily become an operational workflow agent.

Why are companies moving beyond chat?

Many business processes require more than a single answer. They involve gathering information from separate systems, making decisions within established rules, coordinating between people and software, and documenting what happened. A chat interface can make those activities easier to start, but an agent can potentially perform selected steps when it has suitable context and authorized access.

This changes the design question from “Can the model answer this?” to “Which part of this process should the system handle, what must it be allowed to do, and how will we know the result is better?” Deloitte recommends defining the target process before deployment, including tasks performed by people and agents, handoffs, coordination points, and process KPIs (Deloitte, 2026).

What do the adoption figures actually show?

Recent figures indicate growing interest, but they measure different things and should not be collapsed into one market-wide adoption rate.

Source and date Reported finding What it measures
Gartner, 2025 75% of surveyed IT application leaders were piloting, deploying, or had deployed some form of AI agents. A survey of 360 IT application leaders at organizations with at least 250 employees in North America, Europe, and Asia/Pacific; fieldwork took place in May and June 2025. “Some form” does not mean fully autonomous agents.
Gartner, 2025 15% were considering, piloting, or deploying fully autonomous agents. A separate measure in the same release and survey; it is not directly equivalent to the broader “some form” figure.
OpenAI, 2025 The median sector’s enterprise usage grew by more than 6x over the prior 12 months. OpenAI’s aggregated enterprise usage, not a universal measure of business adoption.
Salesforce, 2026 Average activated agents increased from 5 in February 2025 to 13 in April 2026. Activity in Salesforce’s own platform dataset, not a count of agents across all businesses.
Deloitte, 2026 21% of surveyed companies reported having a mature model for AI agent governance. Deloitte’s survey of 3,235 business and IT leaders across 24 countries and six industries, conducted in August and September 2025.

Sources: Gartner, 2025; OpenAI, 2025; Salesforce, 2026; Deloitte, 2026.

The samples and definitions differ: Gartner surveyed leaders, Deloitte surveyed business and IT leaders, and the OpenAI and Salesforce figures describe their own enterprise or platform activity. Treat them as separate signals rather than comparable readings of a single adoption curve.

How should an enterprise choose a first agent workflow?

Start with a bounded process and a named operational outcome, not a desire to maximize autonomy. Gartner’s analysis of 107 agentic AI deployments argues that focused use cases tend to deliver the greatest business value (Gartner, 2026).

  1. Define the process. Document the current tasks, systems involved, people responsible, decision points, and handoffs. Identify the specific step or sequence the agent would handle.
  2. Set the outcome and measures. Choose process KPIs that can show whether the redesigned workflow improves the intended result. Establish the existing process as a point of comparison.
  3. Map data and tool access. Identify the company context the agent needs and the actions it must take. Grant access only to the information and tools needed for the defined work.
  4. Set approval and escalation points. Decide which actions the agent may complete, which require a person’s approval, and when an uncertain or exceptional case must be handed to a human.
  5. Plan oversight before expansion. Define how the work will be monitored and evaluated, how actions will be audited, and who is accountable for the workflow. Expand only when the process and controls are working as intended.

What should teams evaluate in an agent approach?

A useful evaluation is about operational fit and control, not just how fluent a model sounds. Consider these dimensions when assessing an internal build or a platform:

  • Workflow fit: Does the approach handle a real, bounded process and support a measurable outcome?
  • Context and integrations: Can it reach the relevant company data and tools without giving it unnecessary access?
  • Permissions and human approvals: Can the organization define what the agent may do, where approval is required, and when work must be escalated?
  • Monitoring and auditability: Can the team evaluate results, review actions, and understand where the process failed?
  • Implementation and scale: Can the approach be maintained as use expands without creating overlapping agents or fragmented oversight?

These criteria follow from the workflow and governance considerations described by OpenAI, Gartner, and Deloitte. The cited evidence does not provide an independent, like-for-like vendor benchmark, so it cannot support a platform ranking.

Why do governance and human oversight matter?

An agent that can act on company systems introduces operational risks beyond inaccurate answers. Poorly bounded permissions can enable unauthorized actions; uncontrolled proliferation can fragment governance and increase security exposure. Gartner specifically warns about agent sprawl and these associated risks in its analysis of deployments (Gartner, 2026).

Governance is therefore part of the workflow design, not a policy to bolt on afterward. Teams need to determine who owns the process, what access the agent receives, which actions require approval, how exceptions are handled, and how results and actions are reviewed. Deloitte’s finding that only 21% of surveyed companies reported a mature model for AI agent governance underscores that many organizations are still developing this capability (Deloitte, 2026).
