Enshrouded’s “Version Mismatch” error means your Steam game client and the dedicated server are running incompatible builds. The usual fix is to let Steam finish updating the player client, update the dedicated-server installation, and restart the server. A server can need an update even when the game client does not, so checking only your own game is not enough.
Work through the steps below in order. They cover a self-hosted server installed through Steam, a SteamCMD installation, and a rented server managed through a host control panel.

What the Version Mismatch error means
Enshrouded checks whether the connecting game and dedicated server can communicate using compatible files and protocol data. If one side is on a different build, the connection is rejected with a version-mismatch message. This is a compatibility problem, not evidence that your save is damaged or that your router is blocking the game.
The mismatch can occur in either direction:
- Steam updated the player’s game, but the server is still running its previous build.
- The server was updated or restored from a newer backup while the player’s installation is older.
- A server-only hotfix changed the dedicated-server build without changing the downloadable game client.
- A provider downloaded an update but did not restart the running process, so the old executable remains active.
There is no single permanent build number you can use as a universal reference. Builds change as Keen Games releases patches and hotfixes. The practical test is whether both sides have completed their available updates and the server has been restarted afterward.

Why your server can be older than your game after a patch
Steam distributes updates to clients and dedicated servers through separate packages and processes. A player’s Steam client may update automatically while a self-hosted server is offline, a SteamCMD task is not scheduled, or a hosting provider is still applying the release.
Server-only updates are real
Keen Games documented this behavior in Hotfix #11. That notice identified server version number 511168 and explicitly stated that game clients did not change. In that situation, players could appear fully up to date while a dedicated server still required an update. The number is historical and should not be treated as the current Enshrouded build.

The post-patch timing window
Immediately after a patch, Steam may update players before every server installation has been processed. A provider may also stage files and apply them only when the server is restarted. During that window, an otherwise healthy server can reject every connection until the server update and restart finish.
Fastest fix: synchronize both ends
Use this sequence before changing ports, firewalls, DNS, or router settings:
- Check Steam Downloads and allow Enshrouded to finish updating.
- Update the dedicated-server files using the method that installed them.
- Stop and start the server, or use the provider’s restart action, so the new files are loaded.
- Close and relaunch Enshrouded if Steam updated while the game was open.
- Try joining only after the server reports that it is online again.
A clean server restart is the synchronization point. Merely downloading files while the old server process continues running does not reliably resolve the error.
Step 1: Update the player’s Enshrouded installation
Check Steam Downloads
- Open the Steam client.
- Open Downloads and look for an Enshrouded update in progress or queued.
- Wait until the download and installation complete. Do not launch the game while Steam is still applying the update.
- Restart Steam if no update appears even though a patch was announced.
After Steam reports the game is current, launch it again and test the server after the server-side steps are complete.

If Steam says the game is current but connections still fail
Steam’s download cache can retain stale update metadata. Clear the cache using Steam’s download settings, then sign in again and check Downloads once more. Clearing the cache does not replace the server update; it only helps when the player installation is not receiving an update that should be available.
Step 2: Update a self-hosted server installed through Steam
If you installed the dedicated server from Steam’s tools library, update that tool separately from the normal Enshrouded game.
- Open Steam and select Library.
- Change the library filter to show Tools.
- Find Enshrouded Dedicated Server.
- Install or apply any pending update.
- Stop the existing server process before launching the updated server.
- Run the dedicated-server executable directly, as described in Keen Games’ server instructions.
- Start the server and wait for it to finish loading before attempting to join.
The first launch creates an enshrouded_server.json configuration file. Keep that file and your existing save directory in place. An update should replace program files, not cause you to create a new world or discard the current configuration.
Confirm you updated the server installation, not only the game
The regular Enshrouded game entry and the dedicated-server tool are separate Steam library items. Updating the game client alone leaves the server unchanged. Conversely, updating a different copy of the dedicated server does nothing if your start shortcut or service still points to the old installation directory.

SteamCMD is commonly used for standalone game-server installations and scheduled maintenance. The safe procedure is:
- Tell players to leave the server, then stop the running server process.
- Open the same SteamCMD installation and maintenance script used to install that server.
- Run the existing update and validation operation for the Enshrouded server installation.
- Wait for SteamCMD to finish downloading and validating all files; do not interrupt it when it is replacing an executable.
- Start the server using the existing launch script or service definition.
- Wait until the server is fully online, then test from an updated client.
Do not guess a new app identifier, installation directory, or launch location. Use the values already associated with your working server. Changing them can create a second, empty installation and make it appear that the update succeeded while the live server is still using old files.

Preserve configuration and saves
Back up the server configuration and save files before maintenance, especially if you are changing scripts. An update/validation operation should repair or replace server binaries while leaving your world data and settings intact. If the process reports that files cannot be written, stop the server service completely and check that the account running SteamCMD has permission to modify the existing directory.
Step 4: Update a rented or managed server
With a rented server, the provider controls the installation path and update mechanism. Some providers apply updates automatically; others require a panel action or a restart before staged files become active.
- Open the provider’s server control panel.
- Look for an Update, Verify, Install update, or similarly named action.
- Run that action if available and wait for it to finish.
- Use the panel’s Restart control, even if the panel says the download completed.
- Wait until the status changes from starting or installing to online.
- Launch the updated game client and try joining again.
Keen Games advises renters to wait for automatic updating or try restarting, depending on the provider. If the panel offers no update or verify control and the mismatch continues after a restart, contact the provider and ask them to verify that the live Enshrouded instance—not a stopped or alternate instance—was updated.
What to include in a support request
- The exact mismatch message and the time it occurred.
- The server name or instance identifier shown in the panel.
- Whether the player client completed its Steam update.
- Whether you ran the provider’s update or verify action.
- The time of the last restart and the server’s current status.
This information helps support distinguish an unfinished provider rollout from a client-side update problem.
How to verify that the fix actually completed
A button labeled “update” is not proof that the running server is current. Check the result before retrying repeatedly.

For a self-hosted installation
- Review the SteamCMD output or Steam download status and confirm it ended without an error.
- Confirm the server process stopped and then restarted from the intended installation directory.
- Check that the process start time is later than the update completion time.
- Make sure the launch script was not pointing to an older duplicate directory.
- Confirm that the existing configuration and save path are still being used.
For a managed installation
- Check the panel’s update or verification log, if available.
- Confirm the instance was restarted after the files were installed.
- Wait for the server to reach its normal online state instead of testing during startup.
- Verify that you are connecting to the same instance you updated.
If Version Mismatch remains after updating
Follow these branches in order. They target an incomplete synchronization before investigating unrelated connectivity problems.

Both sides may not have finished
Reopen Steam Downloads on the player computer and repeat the server update/verify operation. A queued download, interrupted validation, or provider task that is still running can leave one side unchanged.
The server may still be running an old process
Stop the server fully, confirm the process has exited, and start it again. A restart from the operating-system service manager may be necessary when closing a console window does not terminate the service. On a rented server, use the panel restart rather than repeatedly reconnecting to the game.
You may be updating the wrong copy
Multiple SteamCMD folders, old shortcuts, and duplicate provider instances are common causes. Compare the path used by the launch script or panel with the path that SteamCMD updated. The active process must load the files you just validated.

After a major patch, wait for the provider to complete its deployment, then run verify/update and restart again. If other players report the same issue and your panel has no usable update control, provider support is the appropriate next step.
Do not reset the world as a first response
Version mismatch is a build-alignment problem. Deleting saves, regenerating configuration, or reinstalling the entire server can create data loss without addressing the cause. Back up first and replace only the server files required by the update process.

Router changes are not the first fix for a version mismatch. Once both builds match, you can investigate a separate visibility or connection symptom if the server still cannot be found or joined.

Query port
The official network guidance documents query port 15637. Check that your configuration and firewall rules use the port expected by your installation, and change rules only after confirming the server is running the intended configuration.
Steam download cache
If the player’s Steam client repeatedly fails to discover an available update, clear Steam’s download cache, sign in again, and recheck Downloads.
DNS cache
For a name-resolution problem that remains after the builds are synchronized, Windows users can run ipconfig /flushdns in an elevated Command Prompt, then retry the connection. This addresses stale DNS data; it does not update either Enshrouded installation.
Self-hosting or managed hosting after the incident
You do not need to rent a server to fix Version Mismatch. Both approaches can work; the difference is who performs maintenance and how much control you retain.

Choose managed hosting for operational convenience, not because the mismatch requires it. Whichever route you use, confirm who owns updates, how restarts are triggered, where saves are stored, and how you can verify that the live instance uses the newest files.
Preventing the next mismatch
- Check Steam Downloads after every announced patch before inviting players.
- Keep a documented update and restart procedure for your server.
- Schedule or manually run the same SteamCMD update/validation workflow that originally installed the server.
- Back up
enshrouded_server.jsonand world saves before maintenance. - After updating, record the server restart time and confirm the instance is online.
- Tell players to relaunch Steam or the game when a patch lands.
- Keep only one authoritative server installation or clearly label alternate copies.
These checks reduce the most common failure: a client that updated automatically connecting to a server whose files were downloaded later or whose old process never restarted.
