Godlike.Host offers hosted Enshrouded servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
Enshrouded stores dedicated-server settings in enshrouded_server.json in the server’s installation root. The file is created on the first launch. Stop the server before editing it, because the server rewrites the file during shutdown. Validate the JSON before restarting: malformed syntax has been reported either to prevent startup or to make the server fall back to defaults. The settings that matter most are slotCount (a maximum of 16 concurrent players), userGroups (passwords and permissions), and gameSettingsPreset (which must be Custom for your own gameSettings values to take effect).
Where Enshrouded stores server settings
Find enshrouded_server.json in the dedicated server’s install root, not in a normal player save directory. The file is generated when the server starts for the first time. If it is missing, launch the server once, allow it to finish initialization, stop it cleanly, and then look in the installation directory. The location and first-start behavior are documented in setup guides from Winternode and Nodecraft.

Keep one untouched copy and, if you are experimenting with difficulty values, make a second copy after every known-good change. A backup is especially useful when a control panel has generated an incomplete configuration or when a syntax error causes a reset.
Safe editing procedure
- Stop the dedicated server completely. Do not edit while the process is running. The shutdown routine writes the current configuration and can overwrite changes made during runtime; this warning appears in the Winternode settings guide and Nodecraft’s instructions.
- Copy
enshrouded_server.jsonto a backup location. Include the date or the change you are about to test in the backup name. - Open the file in a plain-text editor. Use an editor that preserves quotation marks, braces, commas and UTF-8 text. Avoid word processors that add formatting characters.
- Change only the properties you intend to change. Preserve the surrounding braces and array brackets. JSON requires double quotes around property names and string values; it does not allow comments or a trailing comma after the final item.
- Validate the complete JSON document. A validator should report a successful parse before you save the file. A malformed document has been reported to stop startup in some installations and to reset settings to defaults in others, so treat either behavior as a configuration failure. The conflicting outcomes are discussed in the Steam report about the file reverting to default and the Steam discussion about editing configuration files.
- Save, start the server, and inspect the result. Connect with an administrator account, check the player limit and permissions, and test one changed gameplay setting before inviting everyone back.
If the server fails to start or comes up with defaults, stop it again, restore the last backup, and test the JSON for a missing comma, an extra comma, mismatched braces, or a value placed outside the correct object.

Player capacity: slotCount
slotCount is the setting to change when you want more or fewer simultaneous connections. The documented ceiling is 16 players. Set a value within that limit, save the file while the server is stopped, validate it, and restart. The value limits concurrent players; it does not create additional reserved or administrative slots by itself.
After restarting, verify the value in the management panel or by joining with enough test accounts to confirm the advertised capacity. If a panel offers a value above 16, treat that control as unverified rather than assuming the dedicated server will accept it. The 16-player ceiling is the value reported in the Winternode guide.
Network settings and ports
queryPort and UDP traffic
The default queryPort is UDP 15637. The setting carries server-list queries and game traffic, so changing it requires the same UDP port to be allowed by the host firewall, cloud security group and any router forwarding rule. Change one layer at a time and test from outside the host network.

A setup article reports that a separate 15636 game port was removed in Content Update #2. That is a single-source report, not a permanent guarantee for every future build. If your host panel asks for both ports, compare its template with the version of the dedicated server you are running and avoid opening an obsolete port unnecessarily. Access control with userGroups
userGroups is an array of groups. Each group has a name, its own password, a set of permission flags and a reservedSlots value. This is the mechanism for separating ordinary players from moderators or administrators; it is not a single global password with a role switch.
Permission flags

These names are reported by configuration guides, including GameHostBros’ settings reference. Keep the least-privileged group first in your planning: give regular players only the permissions they need, then create a separate password for trusted staff. Do not reuse a password that protects the server’s operating system or hosting panel.

reservedSlots and connection failures
reservedSlots is associated with a group’s access allocation. Community reports describe two setup surprises: a fourth group named Default was needed before a client could connect, and a value of zero for reservedSlots blocked access. These are reported workarounds, not a confirmed universal schema requirement. If a correctly formatted file still rejects every connection, compare the generated groups with the examples in the Steam discussion on new dedicated-server JSON settings, then test with a simple group and a nonzero reservation before adding more roles.
Presets and custom difficulty
Use a preset for a quick, supported profile
The commonly reported preset values are Default, Relaxed, Hard and Custom. Presets are the safer choice when you want a predefined experience and do not need to tune individual mechanics. Select one value, remove accidental edits from unrelated fields, validate the file and restart.
Use Custom before changing gameSettings
Set gameSettingsPreset to Custom whenever you want values in gameSettings to apply. Leaving the preset on a predefined profile can cause your individual values to be ignored. This dependency is the most important rule in the custom-difficulty workflow and is stated in GameHostBros’ guide.

Documentation does not establish a complete official list of every gameSettings field or the units used by time-based values. Some example numbers look like nanoseconds, but that is an inference and should not be treated as a specification. Copy field names and value types from the file generated by your own server or from a version-matched example, and change one value at a time.
The disputed Survival preset
One post includes Survival in its preset list, while other references omit it. Because the list is inconsistent, do not rely on Survival unless your generated configuration or current server build demonstrably accepts it. If it is rejected, return to one of the consistently reported values or use Custom.
Panels versus hand-editing
Panel-managed configuration
A hosting panel is convenient for changing slots, ports and common presets. It can also expose controls that are not present in the generated file. However, reports describe panels or script-based installers producing incomplete configurations. If a setting appears in the panel but not in the file, stop the server and inspect the actual JSON rather than assuming the panel saved it. The incomplete-file reports and the suggested hand-edit/restart workaround are collected in this Steam thread.

Hand-editing
Direct editing exposes the full file and makes backups and version comparisons straightforward, but a single punctuation error can prevent startup or reset values. Use a JSON-aware editor or validator, keep changes small, and restart after each logical change. Never let a running server write over an untested file.
Troubleshooting checklist
- Server will not start: restore the last backup, validate the JSON, and check commas, quotes, braces and brackets. A syntax error is the first suspect.
- Server starts with old or default values: confirm you edited the file in the active install root, not a backup directory, and check whether shutdown rewrote the file. Then verify that
gameSettingsPresetisCustomfor custom gameplay values. - Players cannot connect: confirm the server is running, the UDP
queryPort(15637 by default) is open end-to-end, and the relevantuserGroupspassword andreservedSlotsare valid. - Administrators lack powers: inspect the group’s permission flags and make sure the connecting account is using that group’s password, not another group’s password.
- Panel changes disappear: stop the service, inspect the JSON it generated, make the correction manually, validate it, and restart. Repeated disappearance indicates the panel or startup script is regenerating the file.
- A value is ignored: check spelling and capitalization against the generated schema, confirm the value is in the correct object, and change only one property before testing again.
Version and documentation caveats
A report dated April 21, 2026 says Update 8 left the schema unchanged, but that statement comes from one source and was not checked against official patch notes. Treat it as a practical observation for that build, not a promise that later updates will preserve every field. Before a major update, back up the JSON, compare the newly generated file with your backup, and revalidate custom settings.

A repeatable change checklist
- Stop the server and wait until its process has exited.
- Back up
enshrouded_server.json. - Change one related group of settings: capacity, networking, access control or gameplay.
- Check that JSON parses successfully and contains no comments or trailing commas.
- Start the server and test from a client that represents the intended player or administrator role.
- Record the working file as the new baseline before making another change.
Following this sequence keeps the highest-impact settings—16-player capacity, UDP connectivity, group permissions and custom difficulty—testable and reversible without relying on undocumented behavior.
