Enshrouded permissions are configured in the server’s enshrouded_server.json file, inside the userGroups array. Each group has its own password and permission flags. The password a player enters when joining selects that group, so there is no separate, universal “admin password” that grants permissions to everyone.
As of October 2026, field names and generated defaults remain version-sensitive. Treat the groups already present in your own file as authoritative, keep a backup before editing, and verify the result with a test account after every change.

How Enshrouded’s permission model works
A user group is both an access credential and a permission profile. The server reads the password attached to each group; when a player enters a matching password at connection time, the server places that player in the corresponding group for the session. Changing a password therefore changes who can use that group, while changing flags changes what members of that group can do.
Permissions do not divide the entire game into separate worlds. Every group still has normal access to the shared world: combat, gathering, digging and quests are available outside player bases. The flags mainly control administrative actions and interaction with player-built areas and containers.

- canKickBan controls whether members can remove or ban other players.
- canEditBase controls editing of player bases.
- canAccessInventories controls use of chests and other containers.
- canExtendBase controls extending a base boundary.
- reservedSlots reserves connection slots for a group rather than granting an in-game action.
Because the password chooses the group, do not distribute an administrator password to players who only need building or inventory access.
Find and prepare the configuration file
The file to edit is named enshrouded_server.json. Its exact directory depends on whether you run the dedicated server yourself or use a hosting control panel. Use the panel’s file manager or the server installation directory, and search for that exact filename if the location is unclear.
- Stop the server. Editing while the process is running can cause the server to overwrite your changes when it shuts down.
- Download or copy the current file. Keep an untouched backup with the date in its filename, such as
enshrouded_server.json.backup-2026-10-14. - Open it as plain text. Use an editor that preserves UTF-8 text and does not add comments, smart quotes or formatting characters.
- Locate
userGroups. Do not replace unrelated settings. Preserve keys added by your server version, even when you do not recognize them. - Save, then restart. Test the connection and permissions before deleting the backup.
Most configuration failures are caused by a malformed JSON file rather than by an incorrect permission choice. Keep the original nearby so you can restore it quickly.
Which groups and defaults should you expect?
The official Enshrouded “Server Roles Configuration” guidance describes a fresh file created after Update 2 as starting with three groups: Admin, Friend and Guest. If an older file already contains a top-level password, the same guidance says the migration can instead create only a default group with Friend-level permissions.
Third-party setup documentation differs on whether passwords are assigned automatically. One hosting reference says groups have no passwords by default and that you must set each one yourself. These statements can both appear true for different file histories or versions, so never assume a default password. Open your file and inspect the actual userGroups entries.

The following reference reflects the official example and the field meanings reported in current setup documentation. Defaults can change between game updates, so compare these values with the file on your server.

There is no published statistic showing how many servers use any particular arrangement. Choose values based on the people who will connect, not on a supposed universal “best” preset.
Configure Admin, Friend and Guest groups
Use the following sequence when setting up a small private server. The names are conventional; you can retain them or create your own, provided every group name is unique in the array.
- Create an administrator credential. In the Admin group, replace the password value with a long, unique password. Do not reuse the password used for your hosting account or game account.
- Limit administrative actions. Keep
canKickBanenabled only for the people who moderate the server. Admin should normally also retain base editing, inventory access and base extension. - Create a builder or trusted-player credential. Give Friend a different password. Enable the base and inventory flags only if those players are trusted to change other people’s builds and use their containers.
- Create a restricted visitor credential. Give Guest its own password and leave base editing, inventory access and base extension disabled if visitors should only play in the world.
- Set reserved capacity. Assign reserved slots only when you understand the resulting lobby behavior. The official sample uses one slot for Admin and three for Friend; those numbers are examples, not requirements.
- Save valid JSON. Check every opening and closing brace, bracket and comma. Do not add comments inside the file.
- Restart and test. Join once with the Admin password, once with the Friend password and once with the Guest password. Test a harmless action appropriate to each role rather than testing by damaging another player’s base.
A representative structure looks like this. It is an illustration of the relationships between fields, not a promise that every game version uses exactly these defaults. Preserve the key order and any additional properties already present in your file.

To obtain administrator rights, set a password on the Admin group and enter that password when joining the server. A player who enters the Friend password joins as Friend, even if the account owner is the server owner. The same rule applies to Guest and any custom group.
Tell players which password to use through a private channel. If a password is exposed, stop the server, change that group’s password, save the file and restart. Changing only the group name does not invalidate a leaked password if the old password remains attached to an active group.

Create custom groups safely
Custom groups are useful when the three presets do not match your community. For example, a “Moderator” group might receive kick and ban rights without being given unrestricted building rights, while a “Builder” group might receive base and inventory access without moderation powers.
- Copy an existing group object inside
userGroupsso the structure matches your version. - Give the copy a unique group name and a new password.
- Set every permission flag explicitly instead of relying on inherited or omitted values.
- Choose a reserved-slot value only if that group genuinely needs priority access.
- Check commas between objects and validate the complete file before restarting.
Do not use the unconfirmed password-prefix workaround sometimes mentioned in community discussions, such as adding a group name before the password. The official configuration guidance does not establish that behavior. Use the password exactly as configured for the selected group.

How reserved slots affect the server list
reservedSlots is a capacity rule, not a permission flag. When one or more slots are reserved for a group, the lobby can appear full to another group whose members would consume the remaining non-reserved capacity. This is why a server may report that it is full even when the raw player count appears below the maximum.
Assign reservations only to groups that should have connection priority. If you do not need priority access, set the value to zero for that group. Several community reports describe setting reserved slots to zero as a way to clear “server is full” errors; those reports are anecdotal, so first confirm that the error is not caused by a genuine player-capacity limit or a stale server process.
Older top-level passwords and migration
Older Enshrouded configurations may contain a password outside the current group-based arrangement. The official summary describes a migration path in which an existing password leads to a single default group with Friend-level permissions. Treat that setting as legacy rather than as a second, global administrator credential.
After taking a backup, inspect whether the file now contains userGroups and which group the old password maps to. Create explicit Admin, Friend, Guest or custom entries, assign separate passwords, and test each one. Do not delete an unfamiliar legacy key until the server starts successfully with the new arrangement and you have confirmed that no other setting depends on it.

Troubleshooting connection and permission problems
The server will not start after editing
Restore the backup first, then compare the edited file character by character. A missing comma, an extra comma, an unmatched brace or a smart quotation mark can prevent the server from parsing the file. Reapply one change at a time and restart after each change so the failing edit is identifiable.
The password works but the player has the wrong rights
That usually means the password belongs to a different group than expected. Check for duplicate passwords, confirm the exact group object containing the password, and reconnect after restarting the server. The group is selected at login; changing flags while a player is already connected may not update that session.
Players cannot connect and a Default group is missing
Some community users report connection failures when a Default entry was absent and say that restoring it with a password fixed the problem. This is anecdotal and is not established as a universal requirement. Before adding it, compare your file with the structure generated by your current server version and keep a backup. If you add a group, give it a unique password and test with one client.
The lobby says the server is full
Inspect every group’s reservedSlots value and the actual player count. Temporarily setting unnecessary reservations to zero is a commonly reported remedy. If the message persists, restart the dedicated server and verify that an old process is not still holding the slots.

Check canEditBase and canExtendBase separately. A group can be allowed to edit without being allowed to extend, depending on the values in your file. Have the player disconnect and reconnect after the change, then test in a base where the owner has granted normal access.
A player can edit but cannot open containers
Base editing and inventory access are independent flags. Enable canAccessInventories for the intended group, save valid JSON, restart and reconnect. Do not grant the flag merely to solve a building problem if access to stored items is not intended.

A moderator cannot kick or ban
Only the group with canKickBan enabled can perform those actions in the official example. Confirm that the moderator joined with that group’s password rather than with the Friend or Guest credential.
Design a least-privilege role layout
Use the smallest permission set that supports each role. The following model is a practical starting point; adjust it for the trust level of your community.

Use separate passwords even when two groups currently have identical flags. That preserves the ability to change one role later without redistributing another role’s credential.
Maintain permissions through game updates
The official article and most third-party guides were written for specific releases, and several guides date from 2024 or 2025. Field names, generated groups and defaults may change. After an Enshrouded update, open the live file before applying an old tutorial’s snippet.
- Keep a dated backup before the update and another after the server regenerates configuration.
- Compare the post-update
userGroupsstructure with your saved version. - Recheck the exact spelling and capitalization of every permission field.
- Confirm that passwords were not cleared or regenerated.
- Run a three-account test: Admin, trusted player and Guest.
- Record any provider-specific behavior in your server documentation instead of assuming it applies elsewhere.
The official Enshrouded Zendesk article titled “Server Roles Configuration” is the appropriate reference when its instructions conflict with an older hosting guide. Even then, verify the resulting values in your own file because the file on disk determines the server’s behavior.
