Godlike.Host offers hosted Enshrouded servers with its own game panel, SFTP access and free DDoS protection, if you would rather not host it yourself.
An Enshrouded dedicated server that closes immediately usually has an installation, update, configuration, resource, or Windows problem. A server that stays running but does not appear in the browser is more often a version, query-port, firewall, router, DNS, or public-IPv4 problem. Start the executable from Steam’s Tools installation, complete updates on both client and server, then use the newest log to identify which failure layer you are dealing with before changing network settings.
First, identify which failure you have
These symptoms point to different checks. Use the table before changing files or forwarding ports:

A running process and a discoverable server are not the same thing. The executable can start successfully while its query traffic is blocked, so do not treat a missing browser entry as proof that the server failed to launch.
1. Install and launch the supported dedicated server correctly
Install it from Steam’s Tools section
Keen Games distributes the dedicated server through Steam’s Tools section, not as a normal game launch. In Steam, open Library, change the library filter to show Tools, install the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool, and allow Steam to finish its download.

For now, the supported dedicated-server platform is Windows. A Linux or other operating-system setup may require an unsupported workaround and should not be used as the baseline when diagnosing an official installation.
Run the executable, not Steam’s Launch button
- Open the installation folder for the Steam tool.
- Double-click
Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe(or start that exact file from a shortcut or script). - Wait for the first initialization to finish. The first run creates
enshrouded_server.json. - Close and relaunch only after the first run has had time to create its files.
Keen Games’ installation guidance specifically says that starting Enshrouded Dedicated Server.exe starts the dedicated server and recommends running the executable directly rather than using Steam’s Launch button. If no JSON file or log directory appears after a direct launch, confirm that Windows security software is not blocking write access to the installation folder and that you are starting the copy installed by Steam’s Tools entry.

Align the client and server versions
A client/server version mismatch is a documented reason that a dedicated server does not appear in the browser. On the host, open Steam and let the Enshrouded dedicated-server tool finish every pending update. On each player’s computer, update the Enshrouded client as well. Restart Steam after an update that remains stuck, then start the server again.
Do not compare only the game’s visible title or shortcut. Steam can update the game client and the Tools installation separately. A server that was working before a game update can therefore become invisible until both installations have completed their updates.

Clear Steam’s download cache when discovery or connection is stale
Keen Games includes clearing Steam’s download cache in its network troubleshooting guidance. In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache, sign in again when prompted, and retry after the server and client have been restarted. Clearing the cache does not replace version alignment; it is useful when Steam is not fetching or applying an update normally.
3. Read the configuration and logs before editing the router
Know the important paths
The dedicated server configuration file is enshrouded_server.json. The FAQ identifies these default relative paths:

./savegame— world saves../logs— current server logs../logs/backup— prior logs retained for bug reporting and comparison.
The paths are relative to the server’s working directory. If you start the executable from a shortcut, scheduled task, or script, verify that it is using the intended installation directory; an unexpected working directory can make a valid save or configuration appear to be missing.
Check the newest log for the stage of failure
- Stop any second server process so that you do not inspect an old instance.
- Start the server once and record the time.
- Open the newest file in
./logs. - If the current log is truncated or overwritten, compare it with the latest file in
./logs/backup. - Look at the final entries for configuration parsing errors, initialization failures, missing files, permission errors, or a crash.
A log that ends before the server announces that it is online indicates a launch or initialization problem. A log that reaches an online state while players still cannot find or join the server moves the investigation to discovery, firewall, router, or addressability issues.

Make one configuration change at a time
Stop the process before editing enshrouded_server.json, preserve a copy of the original, and change only the setting you are testing. Malformed JSON or an accidental change to a port can create a new startup failure that obscures the original issue. If the server stops starting immediately after an edit, restore the saved copy and confirm whether the previous log behavior returns.
4. Verify memory, disk space, and Windows requirements
Dedicated-server resource figures
Keen Games reports approximately 4.4 GB of RAM while idle, with up to 100 MB of additional RAM per player (figures published in 2025). These are planning figures, not a guarantee for every world, player count, or background workload. A host that is already close to its physical-memory limit can terminate the process or become unresponsive as players join.
The same FAQ recommends about 30 GB of free disk space. The server files themselves are approximately 13 GB uncompressed (Keen Games, 2025), leaving the remainder for saves, logs, updates, temporary files, and normal Windows operation. Check the free space on the actual drive containing the server and its save directory, not only the drive where Steam is installed.
Check the host before interpreting a crash
- Open Windows Task Manager while starting the server and watch memory, disk activity, and whether the process disappears.
- Keep substantially more free space than the uncompressed installation size so updates and logs can be written.
- Close memory-heavy applications while testing, especially on a machine that is also running the game client.
- Confirm that Windows can create and modify files in the installation,
savegame, andlogsdirectories.
Do not confuse server and client requirements
Steam’s current support page lists Windows 10 64-bit and 16 GB of RAM as the minimum client baseline (support page accessed in 2026). That is a client requirement, not a precise dedicated-server sizing promise. The server-specific 4.4 GB idle and 100 MB-per-player figures are the relevant starting point for a host, while the Windows support statement still matters because Keen Games currently supports the dedicated server on Windows.

5. Check IPv4, the query port, firewall, and router forwarding
Use IPv4 as the baseline
Keen Games documents IPv4-only multiplayer for Enshrouded. A host with only an IPv6 address, or a network where the router cannot provide an IPv4 path to the computer, may be unable to accept external players even when the process is running. Confirm that the host receives a private IPv4 address from the router and that the internet connection provides a publicly reachable IPv4 address.

The default queryPort is 15637. This is the port used for server discovery information, so blocking it can keep a running server out of the browser. The official known-issues guidance also says to check that the query port is GamePort+1. Use the values shown in your current enshrouded_server.json and the current support documentation if they differ from the defaults; do not assume that every custom GamePort uses 15637.

Configure Windows Firewall carefully
- Open Windows Security > Firewall & network protection > Advanced settings.
- Create or verify inbound rules for the server executable and the configured Enshrouded and Steam ports.
- Apply the rule to the network profile the host actually uses.
- Keep outbound traffic allowed unless you have a deliberate restrictive policy that requires an explicit exception.
- Restart the server and test again after each firewall change.
Use the exact ports from the current configuration and Keen Games’ support guidance. Opening a random range or disabling the firewall permanently makes the result harder to interpret and weakens the host’s security.
Forward ports to a stable private address
In the router’s port-forwarding page, select the host computer’s private IPv4 address and map the configured server ports to the same internal ports. Reserve that address with a DHCP reservation or configure a stable address so the rule does not break after a reboot. If the router has separate TCP and UDP choices, follow the protocol requirements in the current Enshrouded and Steam documentation rather than guessing.

Some internet providers place customers behind CGNAT. In that arrangement, the router shows a private address on its internet-facing side and cannot receive unsolicited connections from the public internet. Port forwarding on the home router will not solve that limitation; you need a publicly reachable IPv4 service from the provider or another hosting arrangement that meets Enshrouded’s Windows and networking requirements.
6. Flush DNS and test local versus external reachability
Flush the Windows DNS cache
Keen Games notes that flushing DNS can help connection errors. Open Command Prompt as a normal user and run:
ipconfig /flushdnsWait for the success message, then restart Steam and the dedicated server. DNS flushing cannot repair a closed firewall port or CGNAT, but it can remove a stale local name-resolution result while you are testing discovery.
Separate local and internet tests
- From the host itself, confirm that the process remains running and continues writing logs.
- From another device on the same network, try the server’s local IPv4 address if your chosen connection method supports direct entry.
- From a different internet connection, such as a phone hotspot, test whether the server is visible or reachable externally.
- Compare the result with the router’s public IPv4 address and the address reported by an independent internet connection. A mismatch can indicate CGNAT or another upstream router.
If local clients work and external clients fail, concentrate on forwarding, firewall, public IPv4, and ISP restrictions. If local clients also fail while the process is online, return to the configured ports, version alignment, and the log entries created during the join attempt.
7. Recovery paths for common failure patterns
The window flashes and disappears
- Launch the executable directly from the Steam Tools installation.
- Confirm that
enshrouded_server.jsonis present or is being created. - Inspect the newest current and backup logs for parsing, permission, initialization, or crash messages.
- Check free disk space, available memory, and Windows compatibility.
- Restore the last known-good configuration if the failure began after an edit.
The server runs but is missing from the browser
- Complete Steam updates on the server and every client.
- Restart Steam and the server cleanly.
- Verify
queryPort(default 15637) and the documented GamePort-plus-one relationship. - Allow the configured ports through Windows Firewall and the router.
- Run
ipconfig /flushdns, then repeat the discovery test.
The server is visible but joining fails
- Record the exact time of a failed join.
- Read the host log entries generated at that time rather than relying only on the browser status.
- Check Steam-required ports and the host firewall in addition to the query port.
- Watch RAM and disk activity as the player connects; resource exhaustion can occur after startup.
- Have the player restart the client after confirming that both versions are current.
Only players outside the home network fail
- Confirm that the router forwards to the host’s current private IPv4 address.
- Verify the router itself has a public IPv4 address and is not behind CGNAT.
- Test from a genuinely separate internet connection, not another device using the same Wi-Fi.
- Check that the ISP or an upstream router is not filtering inbound traffic.
8. Preserve evidence before contacting support
If the server still fails, avoid deleting the files that can show why. Make a dated copy of the host’s ./logs directory, its ./logs/backup contents, and the relevant ./savegame data. Include the dedicated-server version, Windows version, configured GamePort and queryPort, whether the process reached an online state, and the exact time of a failed launch or connection.
Describe the failure as one of two states: the process exits before becoming online, or it remains online but clients cannot discover or connect. That distinction directs support toward configuration and initialization evidence versus network and discovery evidence. Send the preserved material with a technical report to Keen Games rather than claiming a fix based only on a temporary browser result.
