For a reliable progression path, make your first compact base on open ground near Longkeep in the Springlands, then establish a larger, permanent compound in Revelwood when your character is roughly level 10–15 and your Flame level is 3. The most important construction decision is the Flame Altar: its level determines the protected build cube, while Flame level separately controls access through the Shrouds.
The practical base plan
Enshrouded base building works best as a two-stage project rather than a single permanent settlement from the opening hours. Use a small, inexpensive camp in the Springlands to learn the building system and support early crafting. Later, when exploration and production needs increase, make Revelwood your serious headquarters and use other regions for specialized outposts.
Place the Flame Altar before committing to a layout. The altar projects a cube-shaped build zone, and every room, roof, cellar, wall and external platform must fit inside that volume. A visually attractive location can still be a poor base site if the altar is pushed against an edge or placed in a hollow that leaves important construction outside the cube.
- Starter base: open terrain near Longkeep in the Springlands, with a level 1 or level 2 Flame Altar, bed, workbench and storage.
- Main base: Revelwood, generally once you are around level 10–15 and have reached Flame level 3.
- Specialized sites: Ferndale for rebuilding ruins, the Blue Goblet Tavern for a tavern or village project, Nomad Highlands for mid-game travel and production, Veilwater Basin for a water-focused end-game build, and Kindlewastes for a fortified outpost.
How Flame Altar levels define your build area
The Flame Altar level controls the size of the build zone. The Enshrouded wiki lists the zone as a cube measured per side, not as a flat floor area. Increasing from 40 to 80 per side therefore provides far more usable volume for multi-storey construction, cellars and towers.

Altar level and Flame level are different systems
Raising the altar level expands the area in which you can build. Raising the separate Flame level increases your ability to pass through the Shrouds. A higher Flame level does not automatically enlarge an existing construction zone, and a larger altar zone does not by itself unlock deeper Shroud access. Plan material collection and progression with both systems in mind.
Best starter locations
Springlands near Longkeep: the safest learning choice
Open ground near Longkeep is the usual first-base recommendation because the terrain is comparatively easy to read and leaves room to learn foundations, walls, roofs and furniture without fighting the landscape. Start with a level 1 or level 2 altar instead of trying to build a finished castle. A bed gives you a local respawn point, a workbench supports early crafting, and storage prevents the camp from becoming a pile of loose containers.
Choose a patch with enough clearance for the entire altar cube. Do not place the altar merely because the small central platform looks convenient; the eventual zone must also accommodate roof height, a possible cellar and a path for future expansion. A compact first camp is easier to abandon or repurpose when you move to Revelwood.
Ferndale: a restoration project
Ferndale suits builders who want to incorporate an existing settlement. Ruined walls can provide a visual foundation for new rooms and reduce the amount of terrain you need to reshape. The trade-off is geometry: old structures, collapsed sections and uneven ground can make it harder to keep every planned roof or basement inside the altar cube.
Before placing the altar in Ferndale, identify the building you most want to preserve and check whether the cube can cover it with room for additions. If the altar must sit at one edge to include a ruin, reserve the opposite side for low-priority paths, gardens or decoration rather than essential production rooms.

Blue Goblet Tavern: best for a themed settlement
The Blue Goblet Tavern is a natural choice for a tavern, inn or village-style build. Its identity is the attraction, not convenience for every expedition. The location is out of the way for long exploration trips unless you have fast travel available, so it is better treated as a themed destination or secondary base than as the only home for a character who spends most of the time traveling elsewhere.
Best locations for a permanent or specialized base
Revelwood: the strongest all-purpose main base
Revelwood is the recommended destination for a single serious base once your character is approximately level 10–15 and the Flame level has reached 3. A larger, walled compound can combine crafting, storage, beds and defensive space while serving as a staging point for Shroud runs. Its position makes it more useful for a developed playthrough than a starter camp that was designed only for early recipes.
When scouting, think in terms of repeated departures and returns. The ideal site has room for a central altar, a practical approach to the compound and a rooftop platform for launching the glider. Avoid a narrow valley bottom for the principal altar: even if it looks sheltered, steep walls can make the build cube awkward and limit vertical or outward expansion.
Nomad Highlands: a mid-game travel and production base
Nomad Highlands is suited to players who want a base positioned around mid-game travel and production. Use it when the value of being near a particular route or resource outweighs the convenience of keeping every function in Revelwood. It can operate as a satellite workshop, a resupply point or a temporary production center while the main compound remains elsewhere.
Veilwater Basin shore: a late-game water build
The shore of Veilwater Basin is an end-game suggestion for builds that depend on a waterfront setting. Water can define the architecture and make a settlement memorable, but shoreline sites require especially careful altar placement. Confirm that the cube covers the landward rooms and any planned decks or elevated structures before you commit to a permanent layout.
Kindlewastes: an outpost, not usually a headquarters
Kindlewastes is better used as a fortified outpost. Enemies are dangerous and the environment is harsh, so a production-heavy main base there can turn routine resupply into a defensive chore. Build only what the outpost needs: a safe return point, storage and the utilities required for operations in that region.

Step-by-step: placing and upgrading a Flame Altar
- Scout the whole site first. Walk the perimeter of the area you want to develop. Look for a central position that is safe, reachable and not trapped in a tight ruin or valley bottom. Consider where you will approach from after an expedition and where a future rooftop launch platform could sit.
- Decide whether the location is temporary or permanent. A Springlands camp can be intentionally small. A Revelwood headquarters deserves a central altar position and enough clearance for multiple floors, storage expansion and a defensive wall.
- Check the projected cube before confirming placement. Verify what the build zone covers in every direction. The visual center of a ruin is not necessarily the center of a usable cube. Make sure the planned roofline, cellar and outer walls are inside the protected volume.
- Build only the essential starter functions first. Place a bed, workbench and storage, then add shelter and a sensible route between them. This gives you a functional camp without consuming time and materials on decoration that may be abandoned.
- Upgrade the altar when the larger zone has a purpose. Level 2 doubles the listed side length from 40 to 80 and costs 1 Shroud Core. Level 3 expands it to 120 per side and costs 5 Shroud Cores, while requiring Flame level 2. Level 4 reaches 160 per side, costs 5 Shroud Nexus and requires Flame level 3. Do not gather an upgrade material merely to display a higher number; upgrade when your actual rooms or production plan need the additional volume.
- Recheck coverage after changing the plan. Draw an imaginary boundary around the altar’s cube and compare it with your intended compound. This is particularly important for restoration builds, where a roof or cellar can extend beyond the protected volume even though the ground floor appears to fit.
- Expand around workflows rather than appearance alone. Keep crafting, storage and utility functions in identifiable zones. Leave circulation space between them so a later expansion does not require dismantling the entire interior.
- Add a roof platform when travel becomes routine. A rooftop launch point can turn the base into a practical staging area for glider departures. Keep it within the altar cube and connect it to the main circulation route rather than treating it as an isolated decorative tower.
Layout principles that prevent expensive rebuilds
Keep the altar central
The altar is the reference point for the build cube, so a central position gives the most even growth in all directions. Edge placement is tempting when you want to preserve a ruin or stay close to a path, but it sacrifices expansion on one side. For a long-term base, central placement is usually more valuable than matching the altar to the first room you build.
Reserve vertical space
The zone is three-dimensional. A plan that fills the ground footprint can still fail when you add a tower, roof garden or cellar. Decide early whether the compound will grow upward, downward or both, and leave vertical clearance for those choices.
Recommended Free Tools
Separate production, storage and utility areas
A simple division makes a base easier to use: one side for crafting stations, one for storage and one for utilities such as beds or other support functions. The exact room count depends on your playthrough, but the principle remains useful as the altar zone expands. Keep high-traffic storage close to the entrance and put less frequently accessed items farther inside.
Build defenses around the site you actually use
A wall that encloses only the first room will force a later rebuild when the compound grows. Mark the likely outer boundary before constructing permanent defenses. In dangerous regions such as Kindlewastes, prioritize a defensible, compact footprint over an ambitious spread-out city.
Use ruins deliberately
Ruins can supply character and reduce construction work, especially in Ferndale. They can also hide uneven floors and broken sections that complicate foundations. Treat every preserved wall as a design constraint and verify that the altar cube covers the complete restored structure.
A progression plan from first camp to main compound
Opening phase: establish a minimal Springlands camp
Place a level 1 altar on open ground near Longkeep. Build the bed, workbench and storage you need to survive and craft. Keep the structure compact and avoid spending scarce materials on a large perimeter before you understand how much space your routine requires.

Early expansion: use level 2 for practical breathing room
If the initial camp begins to feel cramped, level 2 provides an 80 × 80 × 80 zone according to the wiki and requires 1 Shroud Core. Use the new volume for a second floor, separated storage or a covered work area rather than expanding randomly in every direction.
Transition: move serious construction to Revelwood
At roughly level 10–15 and Flame level 3, start the permanent compound in Revelwood. The first camp can remain as a fallback or travel stop. Build the Revelwood altar where the complete compound can grow around it, then establish the crafting, storage, utility and defensive zones before adding cosmetic details.
Later specialization: add regional outposts
Use Nomad Highlands for mid-game travel and production, Veilwater Basin for a water-centered end-game project and Kindlewastes for a fortified operational outpost. A specialized site should solve a travel or environmental problem; it does not need to duplicate every function of the main base.

Symptom: the base looks excellent but adds a long trip to every expedition.

Relying on dated pit-style advice
Older community advice describes hollowing out the ground around the flame and placing non-player characters and storage below ground level. Treat that pit-style approach as historical player advice, not as a universal best practice. It can produce a distinctive build, but it makes cube coverage, access and future expansion harder to reason about than a clearly planned surface layout.
How many Flame Altars can one world have?
The maximum number is not reliably settled by current in-game information. The Enshrouded wiki lists 10 Flame Altars at once, while a third-party hosting guide lists 8. A Steam discussion and a later player comment describe a different limit and mention an update that raised it. Because these accounts conflict, do not design a world-wide settlement plan around either number without checking the current in-game limit for your version.
The uncertainty matters most in multiplayer or in a playthrough with several regional outposts. Count every altar already placed, confirm whether the limit applies per world and per mode in your current build, and leave room for the possibility that a future update changes the cap. The same caution applies to the wiki’s 160 × 160 × 160 maximum: a community feature request for a 200 × 200 × 200 zone is a request, not evidence that the larger size exists.
Choosing between locations at a glance
| Location | Best use | Main advantage | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Springlands near Longkeep | First camp | Open terrain for learning and compact construction | Likely to be replaced as travel and production needs grow |
| Ferndale | Ruins restoration | Existing structures provide a visual framework | Uneven ruins can make altar coverage and expansion difficult |
| Blue Goblet Tavern | Tavern or village theme | Strong identity for a social-style build | Out of the way for long trips without fast travel |
| Revelwood | Main compound | Room for a walled headquarters and Shroud-run staging | Requires a later move and more deliberate planning |
| Nomad Highlands | Mid-game outpost | Supports travel and production in that region | Duplicates some functions if treated as a second full headquarters |
| Veilwater Basin shore | End-game water build | Waterfront setting for specialized architecture | Shoreline geometry demands careful cube checks |
| Kindlewastes | Fortified outpost | Supports operations in a dangerous region | Harsh conditions and dangerous enemies make it a poor default headquarters |
Final checklist before you commit
- Is the site safe enough to reach repeatedly?
- Can the altar sit near the center of the area you intend to develop?
- Does the projected cube cover the planned roof, cellar, walls and launch platform?
- Are you building a temporary camp, a permanent headquarters or a specialized outpost?
- Will the location shorten or lengthen your regular exploration routes?
- Have you separated altar-level construction expansion from Flame-level Shroud progression?
- Have you checked the current world altar cap before planning multiple bases?
The dependable route is straightforward: learn the system with a compact Springlands camp, move serious construction to a centrally placed Revelwood altar, and use regional outposts only when their travel or environmental advantages justify another site. Careful altar placement matters more than the first wall you build.
