A human-readable crypto address is a name or formatted identifier that compatible software can resolve or interpret as a blockchain address. It is easier to read than a long hexadecimal address, but it is not automatically the address itself or proof that the recipient is who they claim to be. Before sending, verify the intended network and the destination address your wallet displays.

What does “human-readable crypto address” mean?

The phrase describes identifiers designed to be easier for people to read or remember than a conventional blockchain address. Software interprets the identifier to determine a destination. The term covers two related but distinct approaches: a name that must be resolved, and a formatted address that carries additional context.

A name that resolves to an address

An Ethereum Name Service (ENS) name such as alice.eth can act as a readable reference. When compatible software looks it up, an ENS resolver returns the address stored in the name’s relevant record. ENS describes itself as “a distributed, open, and extensible naming system based on the Ethereum blockchain.” ENS protocol overview

ENS names can have records for ETH and other cryptocurrencies, depending on what has been configured and what the software supports. The name therefore points to a destination; it is not simply a shorter spelling of that destination. ENS address lookup ENS support: What is ENS?

A formatted address with chain context

ERC-7828 proposes an interoperable name format that combines an address with a chain identifier and an optional checksum. Its address component may be a raw target address or an ENS name. Unlike a name alone, the format can state which chain is intended. ERC-7828 is a proposal; support depends on the software using it. ERC-7828: Interoperable Names

How ENS names become addresses

ENS supports two lookup directions. Forward resolution converts a name into an address; reverse resolution associates an address with a readable name. ENS documentation describes resolution as “the process of converting a human-readable name to a machine-readable address.” ENS resolution overview

A name can have address records for multiple chains, and a primary name can be set for compatible apps to display. Which address a name produces depends on the relevant record and resolver behavior. Records can change, so the same name should not be treated as a permanent guarantee of one destination.

How the two approaches differ

Question ENS name ERC-7828 format
How it identifies a destination A resolver looks up the name’s configured address record. Combines an address or ENS name with a chain identifier.
How clearly it states the chain A name may have records for multiple chains; the destination depends on the record and software. Includes a chain identifier.
Does lookup depend on resolution? Yes. Compatible software resolves the name when it is used. The address component may be a raw address or a name; a name component still requires resolution.
Can the destination change? Yes. The configured record or resolver behavior may change. An ENS name component may resolve differently over time.
Checksum The name-resolution description does not define a checksum for the name. Checksum is optional.

The distinction matters in practice: a readable name makes a destination easier to refer to, while an explicit chain identifier helps communicate the network. Neither removes the need to confirm what your wallet is about to send to. ERC-7828 details

What to check before sending crypto to a readable name

  1. Confirm the network. Make sure the sending network matches the network for which the recipient address is intended. A name may have records for more than one chain.
  2. Inspect the resolved destination. Review the address shown by the wallet after lookup. Do not rely on the name alone.
  3. Check the recipient independently. A familiar-looking label does not establish who controls the destination. Ethereum.org documents address-poisoning and spoofing risks; treat displayed names as identifiers to verify, not independent proof of identity. Ethereum.org: Naming smart contracts
  4. Consider whether the name or record could have changed. A previously used name is not a substitute for checking its current resolved address.

Is an ENS name the same as a wallet address?

No. An ENS name is a readable reference that compatible software resolves to a machine-readable address. The address is the destination used for the transaction. ENS can also associate an address with a readable name through reverse resolution, but that association does not by itself verify the identity or authority of the person receiving funds.
