If an ENS name stopped resolving after an upgrade, first identify which path failed: forward resolution (name to an address or other record) or reverse resolution (address to its primary name). Then read the name’s current resolver, verify the requested record and coin type, test another ENS-capable client, and check ENSv2 and CCIP-Read support. A successful transaction can still be irrelevant if it was sent to a resolver the name no longer uses.
Start by classifying the failure
“Not resolving” can describe several different results. A wallet may fail to turn example.eth into an address, a dapp may be unable to read a text or content record, or an address may no longer display its primary ENS name. These are different lookups and can fail at different layers.
| What you expected | Resolution direction | First question |
|---|---|---|
| An ENS name returns an address | Forward | Which resolver does the name currently point to, and does it contain the requested address record? |
| An ENS name returns text, avatar, content, or another record | Forward | Is the requested record present on the current resolver and for the expected coin type or key? |
| An address displays an ENS primary name | Reverse | Does the address have a reverse record on the relevant chain, and does that name resolve forward to the same address? |
| One app fails while another works | Client or transport | Does the failing app support ENSv2 and permit CCIP-Read HTTP requests? |
Before changing anything, record the exact ENS name, the chain you selected, the app or library version, the record type you requested, the result you saw (null, old value, error, or timeout), and whether another current client gives the same result. This prevents a reverse-record problem from being mistaken for a broken forward record.
How ENS resolution works
Forward resolution: name to record
For a forward lookup, a client first consults the ENS registry to find the resolver associated with the name. It then asks that resolver for the requested address, text, content, or other record. The resolver currently associated with the name is therefore decisive; a record stored in a different contract is invisible to readers. The ENS resolution guide describes this registry-then-resolver sequence in detail: ENS Resolution documentation.

A resolver pointer is mutable. During a migration or contract upgrade, the name may be switched to a new resolver while application code, a script, or a cached configuration still targets the previous address. A write to that old resolver can confirm on-chain and yet leave users seeing the old value, because clients now read elsewhere. ENS explicitly warns that a name’s resolver pointer can change and that writes to a resolver the name no longer uses may update records nobody reads: ENS app-developer guide.
Reverse resolution: address to primary name
Reverse resolution starts with an address and looks up the name recorded for it. It is separate from setting a forward address record. An address can have a correct forward name record while its reverse record is missing, stale, or set on another chain. ENS documents the reverse registrar mechanism at Reverse Registrars.
Never trust a reverse name without validating it. After receiving a name for an address, resolve that name forward and compare the resulting address with the original address. ENS’s primary-name guidance requires this check; if the addresses do not match, a client should display the address rather than the unverified name: Primary Names.

1. Define the exact record and network
Write down whether you need an Ethereum address, a non-Ethereum coin address, a text key, a content hash, or another record. Address records are chain-specific. A name can contain an address for one coin type while having no value for the chain your app requests, so “an address exists” is not enough. Note the network selected in the wallet or dapp and the coin type it asks for.
Also test whether the failure affects one name or many. A single-name failure points toward resolver or record state. Several names failing in one app points toward client compatibility or transport. The same names failing everywhere suggests a registry, resolver, permissions, or gateway issue.
2. Read the name’s current resolver again
Do not reuse a resolver address saved before the upgrade. Query the ENS registry for the name’s current resolver, then inspect that resolver. In ENS Manager, open the name and check the resolver shown for it before attempting another write. ENS says names using supported public resolvers can be edited in Manager: Public Resolver documentation.

For application developers, resolver discovery must happen at runtime or through a correctly refreshed library path. Hardcoding a resolver address makes an upgrade particularly dangerous: the transaction may be accepted by the old contract while every current reader follows the new pointer.

Ask the current resolver for the exact record your client needs. Check the value, not merely the fact that the name is registered. A newly registered name can legitimately return null because registration and record-setting are separate actions. ENS lists “no address record set yet” as a reason a just-registered name has no result: ENS app-developer troubleshooting.
For addresses, verify the intended coin type or network. If an app asks for a chain-specific address and only another chain’s address is present, the lookup can be empty even though the name appears configured in a manager interface. For text and content records, confirm the exact key or record namespace used by the app.
4. Distinguish registration from permissions
Registration gives control of a name; it does not automatically populate every record. In ENS Manager, confirm that the connected account has permission to edit the name or its resolver. If a control or record is not editable as expected, verify ownership, manager permissions, and the resolver type before retrying. Repeated writes against an unverified contract can create more confusing transaction history without changing what clients read.
5. Test a second current client
Resolve the same name and the same record in another current ENS-capable wallet, explorer, or library. Keep the chain and requested record identical. If both clients fail, concentrate on resolver state, records, permissions, or CCIP-Read. If one succeeds and one fails, the name is probably intact and the failing environment needs compatibility or network investigation.

ENS’s developer troubleshooting guidance identifies libraries released before ENSv2 support as a cause of null results in an application. Check the library’s maintained ENSv2 readiness or support information and update the dependency using the project’s documented upgrade path: For App Developers. Do not assume that a general wallet or web3 upgrade automatically upgraded the ENS component used by your app.

6. Rewrite only after confirming the resolver
Once the current resolver and intended record are confirmed, make the change through ENS Manager or a library that resolves the pointer afresh. Confirm the transaction’s target contract is the resolver currently associated with the name. After confirmation, read the record again from an independent client. If the independent read still shows the previous value, stop sending transactions and re-check the pointer, record key, coin type, and chain.
7. Preserve evidence for escalation
For a persistent failure, collect the name, chain, resolver address observed immediately before the write, record key or coin type, transaction hash, client or library version, and the exact error. This lets a maintainer tell a wrong-contract write from a missing record, unsupported ENSv2 behavior, or a blocked off-chain request without asking you to repeat blind changes.
When the app fails but another client works
A difference between clients narrows the problem to the failing environment. Use this matrix to choose the next check:
| Observation | Most useful check | Likely corrective action |
|---|---|---|
| Browser wallet and a script both resolve the name; your dapp does not | Inspect the dapp’s ENS library version and ENSv2 support | Upgrade the ENS dependency and follow its migration guidance |
| Scripts resolve; browser requests fail or time out | Check whether the browser permits CCIP-Read HTTP requests | Allow the required request or use a client configuration that supports CCIP-Read |
| One chain works; another returns null | Compare the chain-specific address or reverse record | Set or request the record for the intended coin type and chain |
| Every client returns null after a resolver migration | Read the registry pointer and current resolver records | Repair the record on the resolver the name currently uses |
Do not “fix” an app-only failure by writing the same value repeatedly. If another client can read the correct value, changing on-chain data may damage a working configuration while leaving the incompatible app unchanged.
Check CCIP-Read and off-chain or L2 resolvers
What happens in a CCIP-Read flow
Some ENS names begin resolution on Ethereum Mainnet but obtain record data from an off-chain gateway or another chain. In a CCIP-Read flow, the resolver returns an OffchainLookup error containing a gateway request. A capable client then makes an HTTP request to the indicated gateway and verifies the response according to the resolver’s rules. ENS explains this mechanism at Offchain / L2 Resolvers.
Why an upgrade can expose a transport problem
An application may have worked before an upgrade because its previous library automatically handled CCIP-Read, while the new stack disables it, does not implement it, or applies stricter browser restrictions. Conversely, a browser security policy, content-security rule, proxy, or blocked network request can prevent the gateway call even though the on-chain resolver is present. ENS lists blocked CCIP-Read HTTP requests as a reason resolution can work in scripts but fail in an app: For App Developers.

Developer checks
- Confirm the exact ENS library and provider support ENSv2 and CCIP-Read.
- Inspect the failed request to see whether the resolver returned
OffchainLookup. - Verify the gateway URL, HTTP method, request payload, response status, and browser policy without exposing private keys or user data.
- Compare the same lookup through a client known to support CCIP-Read.
- Separate gateway availability from record correctness: a healthy gateway request does not prove the record is right, and a gateway outage does not prove the record is missing.
Gateway trust assumptions depend on the resolver implementation. ENS notes that CCIP-Read implementations range from trusted models to trustless verification models, so follow the security guarantees documented for the specific resolver rather than treating every HTTP response as authoritative.
Reverse resolution troubleshooting
1. Confirm that the symptom is reverse-only
Resolve the suspected ENS name forward to the address you expect. If that succeeds but a wallet no longer displays the name for the address, the forward record is not the first repair target. Check the reverse record for the relevant chain.
2. Check the chain-specific reverse record
Primary names can be chain-specific. The address recorded in the reverse path must correspond to the address returned by the forward lookup on that chain. A reverse record configured for one network does not guarantee that another network’s lookup will show the same name. ENS’s primary-name documentation describes this matching requirement: Primary Names.
3. Validate the returned name forward
When a reverse lookup returns a name, resolve it forward and compare the result with the original address. If they differ, display the address instead of the name. This protects users from stale or misleading reverse records and is a required client-side safety check, not an optional cosmetic step.
4. Set reverse and forward records separately
Updating a name’s forward address does not automatically create or repair the address’s reverse record. Treat the two writes as separate operations, confirm the relevant permissions, and re-read both directions afterward. A successful forward transaction therefore does not explain why a wallet still shows no primary name.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCommon post-upgrade scenarios
The name is registered but returns null everywhere
Read the current resolver, then inspect the exact address record and coin type. The name may have no address record yet, or the record may exist only for another chain. Registration status alone cannot establish that a usable record is present.

A write succeeded, but readers still show the old value
Compare the transaction target with the resolver currently returned by the ENS registry. If the write targeted a resolver that the name no longer uses, the transaction can be valid while every normal reader continues to use the old value. Re-read the pointer, then write through the current resolver only.
A script works, but the web app fails
Check ENSv2 support first, then inspect CCIP-Read handling and browser HTTP permissions. The script may be following an off-chain lookup that the browser blocks or the app’s provider does not implement.
Ethereum Mainnet works, but an L2 or other chain does not
Confirm that the app requests the chain-specific coin type and that the name has a record for it. For reverse display, verify the reverse record and the forward address on that same chain. Do not infer cross-chain equivalence from a successful Mainnet lookup.
The resolver appears correct, but only one record type fails
Inspect the key or namespace requested by the client. A resolver can answer one record while another is absent. For example, an address record may work while a text or content key has never been set. Keep the diagnosis at the record level instead of replacing the resolver unnecessarily.
A decision process for isolating the changed layer
- Classify direction: forward name-to-record or reverse address-to-name.
- Compare scope: one name, one chain, one app, or all clients.
- Read state: obtain the current resolver and requested record directly.
- Compare time: note whether the failure began after a resolver migration, a record write, an app release, or a network change.
- Test compatibility: use a second current ENS-capable client with the same chain and record request.
- Test transport: if the resolver uses off-chain or L2 data, verify CCIP-Read and gateway access.
- Repair the smallest confirmed fault: set the missing record, update the compatible client, or correct the transport path; do not change unrelated records.
- Verify both directions where relevant: re-read the forward record and, for primary names, perform the reverse-to-forward address match.
Preventing the next upgrade-related outage
- Discover resolvers dynamically: never permanently hardcode a resolver address in a write flow; the name’s pointer can change.
- Keep ENS libraries current: review ENSv2 support before upgrading a wallet, provider, or dapp framework.
- Test the exact records you use: include address, text, content, and chain-specific coin types rather than testing only name registration.
- Exercise both directions: verify forward resolution and reverse primary-name validation in integration tests.
- Test browser transport: include CCIP-Read paths, gateway errors, blocked requests, and fallback behavior in application testing.
- Show safe fallbacks: if reverse validation fails, display the hexadecimal address instead of an unverified ENS name.
- Log resolver state with writes: record the resolver address, chain, record key, and transaction hash so a later migration can be diagnosed without guessing.
These safeguards address different failure layers. Dynamic resolver discovery prevents stale-contract writes; record-level tests catch missing or chain-mismatched data; ENSv2 and CCIP-Read testing catches client and transport regressions; reverse validation protects what users see even when forward records remain correct.
What to provide when asking for help
A useful support report is reproducible. Include the ENS name, whether the issue is forward or reverse, the chain and coin type, the exact record requested, the resolver address read immediately before any write, the app or library version, the observed result, and a comparison result from another client. For CCIP-Read failures, include whether an OffchainLookup response appeared and whether the gateway request was blocked, failed, or returned an invalid response. This information lets someone identify the faulty layer instead of suggesting unrelated transactions.
