Bitwarden is the clearer fit if you want a free personal plan or the option to run your own password-manager server. Enpass is worth considering if you want vaults stored locally or synced through a personal cloud provider. Neither is established as categorically more secure by the available comparable evidence. The right choice depends on how you want to store and sync your vault, which features you need, and how much maintenance you are willing to handle.
How the plans and prices compare
Bitwarden’s official pricing page, accessed October 7, 2026, lists these USD prices before tax. Enpass figures below come from an official search-result excerpt accessed the same date; the live pricing page could not be verified, so confirm current availability, eligibility, region, and renewal terms before relying on them.
| Plan | Price shown | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Bitwarden Free | Free | Basic password management, unlimited devices, and unlimited passwords |
| Bitwarden Premium | $19.80 per year, billed annually ($1.65 per month equivalent) | Personal paid plan; listed price is USD before tax |
| Bitwarden Families | $47.88 per year, billed annually ($3.99 per month equivalent) | Plan for up to six users; listed price is USD before tax |
| Enpass Individual | $1.99 per month for the first 12 months when billed yearly | Promotional terms in an official excerpt; current terms and renewal price need confirmation |
| Enpass Family | $3.99 per month for the first 12 months when billed yearly | Promotional terms in an official excerpt; current terms and renewal price need confirmation |
| Enpass three-year option | $49.99 one-time payment | Amount in an official excerpt; eligibility and current availability need confirmation |
Bitwarden’s listed paid prices are clear annual amounts, but plan features and prices can change. Check its current pricing page before subscribing. Enpass’s indexed excerpt does not establish what happens after its first 12 months, which regions qualify, or whether the three-year payment is still offered; check the live Enpass pricing page for the terms that apply to you.
Where your vault is stored and how it syncs
Enpass: local vaults or personal-cloud sync
Enpass describes vaults stored on a device or synced through a personal cloud provider. This gives you a choice of storage and sync arrangement, but syncing through your cloud account is not the same as hosting the password manager’s server. Enpass also describes multiple vaults and apps for Windows, macOS, Linux, Apple platforms, and Android. See its product information for current platform details.
#1 Best Overall
- POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
- TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
- BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
Bitwarden: managed service or a server you operate
Bitwarden apps sync vault changes through the server you select. You can use its hosted service or self-host the server. Its self-hosting guide lists Linux deployment, Bitwarden Lite in a single Docker container, and Kubernetes/Helm options, with skill requirements ranging from intermediate to advanced.
Self-hosting gives you operational control, but it also makes you responsible for keeping the server updated. Bitwarden expects self-hosted users to keep server software current for compatibility, as described in its release support policy. Choose it only if you are prepared to maintain the service, not simply because a self-hosted option exists.

Which is better for free use and families?
For one person who wants to pay nothing
Bitwarden is the better-supported choice: its official page describes an always-free basic tier with unlimited passwords and devices. Confirm the current feature limits on its plan page before deciding whether the free tier covers your needs.
Recommended Free Tools
For sharing with a household
Bitwarden publishes a Families plan for up to six users at $47.88 per year before tax. Enpass’s pricing excerpt lists a family plan, but does not establish its full current terms or sharing limits. Compare the actual number of people and sharing features you need against each vendor’s live plan details rather than assuming similarly named plans are equivalent.
Rank #3
For paid features beyond password storage
Bitwarden’s current pricing page lists features including sharing, an integrated TOTP authenticator, encrypted file attachments, vault health reports, and emergency access. These vendor-listed features can matter if you want more than a place to store passwords. Check the live plan page for which tier includes each feature; an older help-center comparison marked June 4, 2024 is not a reliable source for 2026 pricing or current entitlements.
What “passkey support” means in each app
Passkey support can describe different tasks. Bitwarden documents three: saving and autofilling passkeys for other services, using a passkey to log in to or unlock a Bitwarden account, and using a passkey for two-step login. Those are not interchangeable capabilities. Bitwarden says account login and unlock support applies to its browser extension in Chromium-based browsers and the web app, with additional setup constraints for PRF-capable unlock. Check its passkey documentation for supported workflows and current requirements.
Rank #4
- FIDO-ONLY FUNCTIONALITY: Supports FIDO2 (passkeys) and FIDO U2F protocols for passwordless and second-factor authentication. Does not support OTP, TOTP, Smart Card (PIV), or other advanced features - upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series for extended functionality
- SECURE AND CONVENIENT: Passwordless MFA login with the YubiKey Bio authenticator and biometric information using a fingerprint, with a PIN as a fallback. Simply plug in via USB and use your fingerprint to authenticate
- DEVICE & OS COMPATIBILITY: Compatible with Windows, macOS, ChromeOS, and Linux. Works seamlessly with supported services like Google and Microsoft accounts, and major password managers. See the full compatibility list at "Works With YubiKey"
- DURABLE & RELIABLE: Resistant to tampering, water, and crushing. No batteries or network connectivity required, offering dependable authentication without any downtime. Securely manufactured in USA & Sweden
- Yubico Authenticator App - Fingerprint enrollment, passkey management and PIN configuration available via the app app - Upgrade to YubiKey 5 Series to generate one-time-passwords (OTP) via Yubico Authenticator and for advanced compatibility (OATH, PIV)
An Enpass pricing excerpt lists passkey support, but does not establish whether it covers each of those workflows. If passkeys are central to your choice, identify whether you need site passkey autofill, vault login or unlock, or two-step authentication, then verify that specific task in the vendors’ current documentation.

The available evidence does not support a categorical security winner. Bitwarden’s official pricing page describes open-source security, zero-knowledge encryption, and two-step login, and its help center links to a security whitepaper. Those are useful descriptions of the vendor’s approach, not proof by themselves that one product is safer than the other.
A fair comparison would need current, comparable information about independent security reviews, their scope and date, each product’s architecture, account recovery, and the two-step methods available to you. The information available here does not establish a like-for-like audit record or enough detail about Enpass’s current cryptographic design to rank the products. Consider your own threat model and review current vendor documentation rather than treating open-source status or a security claim as a security score.
Quick Recap
Choose based on the way you want to manage your vault
- Choose Bitwarden if an always-free basic plan, published personal-plan prices, or documented self-hosting options are your main priorities.
- Consider Enpass if local vault storage or syncing through a personal cloud provider better matches how you want to manage your data, and you have confirmed the plan and renewal terms that apply to you.
- Compare family plans directly if more than one person needs access; Bitwarden publishes a six-person limit, while the Enpass excerpt does not settle its current family terms.
- Check passkey workflows individually if you want to store site passkeys, sign in to your password-manager account with a passkey, or use one for two-step login.
- Do not choose on a blanket security ranking: the available evidence does not establish a like-for-like basis for one.
