In the Enpass vs 1Password choice, the deciding difference is how you want your vault stored and synced: Enpass lets you choose your own sync route, while 1Password provides a hosted account designed for access across devices. Neither is a universal winner. Enpass suits people comfortable managing sync and backups; 1Password is a stronger fit for people who want built-in cross-device access, family sharing, and Watchtower alerts.
This comparison draws on each company’s published product, support, and security documentation—not hands-on tests or an independent security audit. The vendors’ descriptions explain their designs, but do not establish which product is categorically safer.
How do Enpass and 1Password handle vault storage and sync?
Enpass treats vault storage as a choice you manage. Its help documentation describes each vault as an encrypted database and lists online sync through Dropbox, Google Drive, OneDrive, iCloud, Box, WebDAV, or Nextcloud. It also offers offline Wi-Fi sync and folder sync. Enpass says personal vault data is synced without being sent to Enpass servers. See Enpass’s sync documentation.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsThat flexibility shifts responsibility to you: you choose the sync destination and need a dependable plan for keeping devices in sync and backing up vault data. A cloud provider or local folder may be convenient, but setup and recovery depend on the option you choose.

This avoids choosing a separate personal sync destination, but means your workflow depends on the hosted service and your account access. Read 1Password’s security model overview.

What security designs do the companies publish?
Enpass: device-side encryption and a user-chosen vault location
Enpass’s 2026 Security Whitepaper describes cryptographic operations occurring on the device, 256-bit AES in CBC mode, and 320,000 rounds of PBKDF2-HMAC-SHA512 for key derivation. These are Enpass’s published technical details, not the result of an independent comparative audit. The whitepaper also frames data ownership as a core design principle. See the Enpass Security Whitepaper.
1Password: AES-GCM-256 and a Secret Key
1Password Support says account data uses authenticated AES-GCM-256 encryption and that a 128-bit Secret Key is combined with the account password. Its zero-knowledge explanation says the Secret Key is generated on the user’s device and combined locally with the account password. These are vendor-published descriptions; they are not an independent validation of the implementation. See 1Password’s security model and its zero-knowledge explanation.

Which manager is better for family sharing and password alerts?
Choose 1Password if shared access is central
1Password documents family vault sharing and expiring links for sharing items with people who do not use 1Password. Its Watchtower feature flags compromised passwords and other security issues. Those capabilities make it a natural option when sharing with household members is a routine need. The product page does not establish comparative alert accuracy. See 1Password’s feature information.
Choose Enpass if you want separate vaults and an audit dashboard
Enpass documents multiple vaults and an Audit Dashboard. The dashboard identifies compromised, identical, weak, or expired passwords and accounts that could use two-factor authentication or passkeys, according to Enpass’s security overview. This is a password-health workflow; it should not be read as proof that Enpass detects more issues than Watchtower.
What should you check about price and account recovery?
There is no reliable like-for-like price comparison here: current prices, plan limits, billing terms, and regional availability were not established. Check each vendor’s official pricing page for your country and intended plan before subscribing: Enpass pricing and 1Password pricing.
1Password’s product page mentions an Emergency Kit and family account recovery, but that is not enough to compare recovery procedures in full. If recovery options are a deciding factor, read each provider’s current recovery documentation and make sure you understand what happens if you lose a device or account credentials before relying on either setup.
