There is not enough verified evidence to name the five most energy-efficient refrigerators available to buy in 2026. The ENERGY STAR list reviewed for this guide is labeled “Most Efficient 2025,” not a definitive 2026 ranking. It does, however, provide three useful model examples—with listed capacities and annual electricity use—that show how to compare refrigerators without mistaking the lowest raw kWh figure for the best fit.

What refrigerator uses the least electricity?

For a specific refrigerator, the clearest comparison is its annual energy use in kilowatt-hours (kWh/year) on the exact model’s EnergyGuide label or official product record. Compare that figure alongside capacity and configuration: a smaller appliance can use fewer kWh simply because it stores less food.

The ENERGY STAR “Most Efficient 2025” results page lists these examples. They are not a ranked top three, and the list does not establish the five most efficient refrigerators you can buy in 2026.

Model listed Configuration Capacity Annual energy use What to verify
Beko BFBF2414SS Bottom freezer 11.4 cubic feet 286 kWh/year Current certification, availability, exact model documentation, and EnergyGuide label
Liebherr C5250 Bottom freezer 11.4 cubic feet 288 kWh/year Current certification, availability, exact model documentation, and EnergyGuide label
LG LB12S2000* Bottom freezer 11.8 cubic feet 285 kWh/year The asterisk denotes a model family or suffix range; confirm the precise model being sold and its label

These capacities and annual-use figures come from the ENERGY STAR 2025 Most Efficient results. The LG entry’s asterisk matters: do not assume every suffix has the same specification. The small capacities in these examples may not suit a household that needs a full-size refrigerator.

How to compare refrigerator efficiency fairly

Start with the exact model’s annual kWh

Use the EnergyGuide label for the model and suffix you are considering, rather than a brand-wide claim or a figure copied from a similar-looking model. The Federal Trade Commission’s Energy Labeling Rule provides refrigerator-freezer label templates and requires model-specific information on the final label.

Account for capacity and configuration

Compare appliances that can meet the same storage need. ENERGY STAR says the most energy-efficient refrigerator models are typically 16–20 cubic feet, and that top-freezer models tend to use less energy than bottom-freezer or side-by-side designs. Its buying guidance also recommends fewer doors because they reduce air leakage. These are useful selection principles, not substitutes for checking each model’s annual kWh.

Check fit and features before buying

Confirm the manufacturer’s dimensions for the exact model, including required ventilation clearances and door swing. Measure the kitchen opening and the delivery route. Also check whether the model has a through-door dispenser or ice maker; do not assume the energy effect of a feature without model-specific evidence.

Look at refrigerant and total purchase cost

ENERGY STAR identifies R-600a and R-441A as lower-global-warming-potential refrigerants. Check the manufacturer’s documentation for the refrigerant in the exact model. For cost, consider the purchase price after any eligible local rebate, plus delivery and removal charges; a rebate’s amount and eligibility depend on location and current program terms.

Where to verify a refrigerator’s specifications

The U.S. Department of Energy’s refrigerator certification database can be searched by brand, type, model number, and manufacturing year. DOE says it includes models greater than 10 cubic feet, but not every model, so an absent result does not by itself prove a product is inefficient or uncertified.

Use the exact model documentation and EnergyGuide label as well as database records. ENERGY STAR’s 2025 Most Efficient results are a useful source for the examples above, but the page is dynamic and its 2025 heading does not verify a 2026 ranking or current retail availability.

Is an ENERGY STAR refrigerator worth it?

Certification is a useful screening signal, but it does not answer every buying question. Compare annual kWh, usable capacity, configuration, fit, features, and purchase cost for the exact model. ENERGY STAR also offers a rebate finder; check current local terms rather than assuming a particular discount applies.
