To enable Energy Efficient Ethernet (EEE), open Device Manager, expand Network adapters, open the wired Ethernet adapter’s Properties, choose Advanced, select Energy Efficient Ethernet (or a similar EEE label), set it to Enabled, and apply the change. The option is not universal: its name and availability depend on the adapter, driver, and Windows version.

What Energy Efficient Ethernet does

Energy Efficient Ethernet is a power-saving feature for a wired Ethernet link. Intel describes it as allowing a capable device to enter Low-Power Idle between bursts of network traffic, then return to full operating power when data must be sent or received. That makes EEE most relevant to links that spend substantial time idle rather than continuously transferring data.

EEE is negotiated between the two devices at the ends of the cable. Your Windows 11 computer is only one end; the other is normally a switch, router, docking station, or another Ethernet device. Intel’s Ethernet Adapters and Devices User Guide, version 27.3, states that both ends must have EEE enabled for power savings and that both ends must automatically negotiate link speed. Enabling a checkbox in Windows therefore does not guarantee a measurable reduction in power use if the connected network equipment does not also support and enable EEE.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The transition between Low-Power Idle and full power can add a small amount of latency. Intel documents that trade-off but does not give a universal latency figure. The practical effect depends on the adapter, driver, switch, traffic pattern, and link speed.

  • EEE applies to a capable wired Ethernet adapter, not to the Wi-Fi adapter entry in Device Manager.
  • The feature can be absent even when Windows 11 is working correctly.
  • There is no generally applicable wattage-saving or performance number for every computer and network.

Before changing the setting

Make the change from the computer that uses the wired connection. Keep the Ethernet cable connected while you configure the adapter so you can immediately see whether the link remains usable.

  • Know which entry represents the physical wired adapter. A computer may list Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, virtual switches, VPN adapters, and docking-station interfaces alongside Ethernet.
  • Record the current value of any EEE setting before changing it. This gives you a precise rollback point if the connection behaves differently afterward.
  • Identify the adapter’s manufacturer and model in Device Manager. This information is useful if the option is missing or if you need the manufacturer’s supported driver documentation.
  • Keep access to your network credentials or another way to reconnect. Some adapter power-state changes can briefly interrupt connectivity.

How to enable Energy Efficient Ethernet in Windows 11

  1. Open Device Manager. Select Start, type Device Manager, and open the matching Windows result.
  2. Expand Network adapters. Select the arrow beside Network adapters to display the installed interfaces.
  3. Select the wired adapter. Choose the physical Ethernet adapter used by your cable. Do not select the Wi-Fi adapter or a virtual network interface. If you are unsure, unplug the cable and note which adapter’s status changes, then reconnect it.
  4. Open its properties. Right-click the adapter, choose Properties, and select the Advanced tab.
  5. Find the EEE option. Look through the property list for Energy Efficient Ethernet or a driver-specific variant containing EEE. Driver interfaces do not use one universal label, so read the complete property names rather than searching only for an exact phrase.
  6. Enable it. Select the EEE property, choose Enabled in the value control, and select OK or Apply. If Windows briefly reports that the adapter is restarting, wait for the wired connection to return before testing it.

Intel documents the Advanced tab as one place to configure EEE. Some Intel adapter installations may also expose related controls through Intel PROSet. The labels and available controls are supplied by the adapter driver, so another manufacturer’s interface may look different.

Verify the change without assuming that power savings are guaranteed

Windows does not provide a universal EEE status indicator that proves the connected switch is using Low-Power Idle. Verification is therefore a practical check of the adapter setting and the connection, not a promise of a measured energy result.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Return to the adapter’s Properties window, open the Advanced tab, and confirm that the EEE property still shows Enabled.
  2. Open a site or service that requires the wired connection, or use the network activity you normally perform. Confirm that the adapter reconnects after the setting is applied.
  3. Check the adapter’s link speed in the status information available on your system. The speed should remain the one negotiated by the link; do not change it merely to make EEE appear to work.
  4. If the connection drops repeatedly, restore the value you recorded before the change and compare behavior. A rollback distinguishes an EEE-related compatibility problem from a pre-existing network fault.

A successful reconnect shows that the local setting was accepted. It does not establish that the switch or router supports EEE, that both ends enabled it, or that a specific amount of electricity was saved.

Why Energy Efficient Ethernet may be missing

You selected the wrong adapter

Device Manager can list several network interfaces. EEE is normally exposed under the physical wired Ethernet adapter. Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, VPN, virtual-machine, and software-defined interfaces can have different power features and may not show an EEE property. Reopen the list and identify the adapter connected to the Ethernet cable.

The adapter or driver does not support EEE

EEE is optional and adapter-dependent. Intel states that not every adapter supports it, and that a setting can be absent when the feature is unsupported by the device or by that Windows version. Missing text is therefore not, by itself, evidence that Windows 11 is damaged.

The driver does not expose the control

Advanced properties come from the installed driver. A driver can support an adapter while exposing a different set of controls from another driver release or from an operating-system-specific package. Note the exact adapter model and driver version shown in the adapter’s properties, then consult the computer or network-interface manufacturer’s documentation for that combination. Do not assume that installing a generic package will add an option the hardware does not support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The interface is provided through a dock or another device

When Ethernet comes from a USB dock, monitor, or other external network device, the relevant EEE capability belongs to that device and its driver. The built-in adapter’s Advanced list cannot add a feature to hardware that is not carrying the connection.

The network equipment does not advertise EEE

A local EEE property can exist even when the connected switch or router lacks EEE. Because power savings require both ends to enable the feature and automatically negotiate link speed, the Windows checkbox alone cannot create end-to-end EEE.

The link-partner and speed-negotiation requirements

EEE is a link-level negotiation, not merely a Windows preference. The computer and the device on the other end of the cable must each support EEE, have it enabled, and negotiate a compatible speed automatically. If either end does not meet those conditions, the link can continue to operate normally without entering the EEE power state.

  • Weatherproof & UV Resistant: Outdoor-rated Cat8 Ethernet cable with UV-resistant PVC jacket; withstands direct sunlight, extreme cold, humidity, and hot weather; anti-aging and durable; Includes 18-month support.

For gigabit Ethernet adapters, Intel recommends Auto Negotiation for link speed. Its EEE guidance also requires automatic speed negotiation. Do not force a speed or duplex value as a routine EEE step. A forced value can prevent the negotiation that EEE relies on and can introduce a separate compatibility problem.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

If you manage the switch or router, check its own documentation for an EEE or 802.3az control and confirm that the port connected to the Windows computer is configured accordingly. If you do not manage that equipment, ask the network administrator whether the port supports EEE; Windows cannot reveal every capability of a remote link partner.

EEE trade-offs when deciding whether to leave it enabled

Decision factor What enabling EEE can mean What to check
Power use A capable endpoint may enter Low-Power Idle between traffic bursts. EEE support and enablement on both ends of the link.
Responsiveness Transitions back to full power may add a small amount of latency. Whether your workload is sensitive to small delays and whether behavior changes after enabling.
Link stability The adapter may briefly change power state; some gigabit power-state transitions can cause a short connectivity loss. Whether the connection returns reliably and whether the problem disappears when you restore the previous value.
Compatibility The setting may have no end-to-end effect if the link partner lacks EEE. The switch, router, dock, or other device at the far end of the cable.
Speed negotiation EEE depends on automatic link-speed negotiation. Leave the adapter at Auto Negotiation unless the manufacturer documents a specific exception.
Availability The option may not appear at all. The exact adapter, driver, and Windows version.

No general wattage or latency number should be applied to every Windows 11 system. Intel’s documentation describes the mechanism and the possible small latency, while the actual result depends on the complete link.

EEE is not the same as Windows adapter power management

Windows provides PowerShell cmdlets named Enable-NetAdapterPowerManagement and Set-NetAdapterPowerManagement. Microsoft’s documented parameters cover specific adapter power-management functions, including selective suspend and wake-related features. EEE is not listed as a parameter in those cmdlets.

That distinction matters because running a generic power-management command does not substitute for the driver’s EEE property. When the adapter exposes EEE, configure it through the adapter’s own Advanced settings (or the manufacturer’s documented utility). Use Microsoft’s cmdlets only for the power features they explicitly support, and do not present them as an EEE command.

Troubleshooting after enabling EEE

The connection does not return

Wait briefly for the adapter to finish applying the property, then check whether the Ethernet status returns. If it remains disconnected, open the adapter properties again and restore the previous EEE value. If the adapter was disabled during the change, right-click it in Device Manager and choose Enable device. Reconnect the cable and test again before making additional changes.

The link reconnects but drops intermittently

Restore the original EEE value and observe whether the dropouts stop. This comparison is more useful than assuming every disconnect is caused by EEE. Microsoft documents possible brief connectivity loss during some gigabit adapter transitions between low-power and fully-on states, but that does not establish a universal failure for all EEE implementations.

Applications feel less responsive

EEE transitions can add a small amount of latency. If an interactive workload is more sensitive to delay than to idle power use, disable EEE on that adapter and compare the behavior. Do not claim a fixed millisecond penalty; the cited manufacturer material does not establish one for every adapter or network.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The setting disappears after a driver change

Recheck the adapter model and the newly installed driver’s Advanced properties. A driver update can expose different options, and an operating-system-specific package may not present the same controls as an earlier package. Follow the computer or adapter manufacturer’s supported-driver guidance rather than forcing an unrelated driver.

Only one computer has the problem

Compare the affected computer’s adapter model, driver, negotiated speed, and EEE value with a known-working wired system on the same network. If the switch port and cable are shared, a difference in the local adapter or driver is more likely than a network-wide EEE setting. Keep the comparison limited to documented properties; do not alter link speed simply to match another machine.

The setting is enabled but there is no obvious energy difference

That result is possible. Both link partners must support and enable EEE, and the feature acts during idle periods between traffic bursts. A busy link may have few opportunities to enter Low-Power Idle, while a non-EEE switch port prevents end-to-end operation. Windows does not provide a universal meter that converts the setting into a guaranteed wattage value.

When disabling EEE is the sensible choice

Leave EEE disabled when the adapter does not expose a supported option, when the connected equipment cannot use EEE, or when enabling it causes repeatable instability or responsiveness problems that disappear after rollback. Disabling it does not damage the Ethernet adapter; it simply keeps the adapter from using that optional low-power behavior.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a stable, mostly idle wired link with EEE support at both ends, enabling the feature is reasonable if a small transition delay is acceptable. For a latency-sensitive or troubleshooting-critical connection, stability and predictable response can outweigh an unquantified potential power reduction. Make the decision from observed behavior and the documented capabilities of the complete link, not from the presence of a checkbox alone.

How to revert the setting

  1. Open Device Manager and expand Network adapters.
  2. Open the wired adapter’s Properties, then select Advanced.
  3. Select Energy Efficient Ethernet or the driver’s equivalent EEE property.
  4. Change the value to Disabled, select OK, and wait for the adapter to reconnect.
  5. Test the same activity that exposed the problem and record the result alongside the adapter and driver details.

If the property is no longer present, do not substitute a generic PowerShell power-management command. Check the current driver documentation and restore the setting through the controls that driver actually provides.

Source-specific technical notes

Intel’s Ethernet Adapters and Devices User Guide, version 27.3, describes EEE as a capable device entering Low-Power Idle between bursts of network traffic and states that both ends of the link must automatically negotiate speed. Intel’s Advanced Settings for Intel Ethernet Adapters documentation, reviewed February 6, 2025, notes that advanced settings can be unavailable for a particular device or Windows version. Those statements explain both the normal Device Manager workflow and why two otherwise similar Windows 11 computers can show different property lists.

Microsoft’s documentation for Enable-NetAdapterPowerManagement and Set-NetAdapterPowerManagement lists supported Windows power controls without an EEE parameter. Microsoft’s guidance on power management for gigabit Ethernet adapters, updated December 14, 2021, describes possible brief connectivity loss during transitions between low-power and fully-on states. Intel’s guidance for adapters limited to 100 Mbps recommends Auto Negotiation for gigabit adapter links; that is consistent with the automatic-negotiation requirement for EEE.

Practical decision checklist

  • Is the selected entry the physical wired Ethernet adapter?
  • Does its Advanced tab expose an EEE-labeled property?
  • Does the adapter and driver documentation identify EEE as supported for this Windows version?
  • Does the connected switch, router, dock, or other link partner support and enable EEE?
  • Is link speed set to Auto Negotiation rather than a forced value?
  • After enabling EEE, does the connection remain stable for the workload that matters to you?
  • If a problem appears, can you reproduce the comparison by restoring the prior value?

If the answer to the first two questions is no, there is no Windows setting to enable on that interface. If the answers are yes but the far-end device does not support EEE, the local option may remain harmlessly enabled while providing no end-to-end power saving. If all sides support EEE and the connection stays reliable, the adapter can use Low-Power Idle during suitable idle periods.
