Endpoint security checking is the assessment and monitoring of a device’s security state and activity. Depending on the software and its configuration, a check may look for malware, suspicious behavior, vulnerable software, or risky settings—and may alert an administrator, block or quarantine a threat, or recommend a fix. A clean result is useful information, not proof that the device is completely secure.

What endpoint security checking means

NIST defines endpoint security software as software installed on an endpoint—usually with elevated privileges—that supports secure operation or collects detailed information about the device. Its examples include tools that report endpoint vulnerabilities and configurations, as well as software that searches for, removes, or quarantines malicious software. NIST’s definition of endpoint security software is a useful starting point.

In practice, “checking” refers to the assessment and monitoring performed by endpoint software or management controls. An endpoint can be a computer or another device connected to an organization’s environment. NIST’s zero-trust architecture material treats endpoint security as a broader combination of strategy, technology, and governance for protecting endpoints and their data, including risks involving managed and unmanaged devices. It places endpoint protection and detection capabilities alongside controls such as host firewalls, malware protection, vulnerability mitigation, and device management. NIST’s zero-trust architecture material describes that wider scope.

What an endpoint security check can examine

The checks depend on the product, its settings and permissions, and the operating system. A system may perform one or several of the following:

#1 Best Overall
WatchGuard Firebox M290 with 1-yr Basic Security Suite (WGM29000701)
  • Enterprise-grade prevention, detection, correlation and response from the perimeter to the endpoint with our Total Security Suite.
  • Gain critical insights about network security, from anywhere and at any time, with WatchGuard Cloud.
  • Built-in compliance reports, including PCI and HIPAA, mean one-click access to the data you need to ensure compliance requirements are met.
  • Up to 18 Gbps firewall throughput. Turn on all additional security services and still see up to 2.4 Gbps throughput.
  • Malware: Search files or activity for known or suspicious malicious software. Depending on the tool, it may also block or quarantine a finding.
  • Behavior and activity: Record or analyze device activity for suspicious patterns. Endpoint detection and response (EDR) tools can provide visibility into endpoint activity and support investigation and response, as Microsoft’s Defender for Endpoint documentation explains.
  • Vulnerabilities and configuration: Identify software weaknesses or risky device settings and report information that can guide remediation.
  • Other protections and state: A wider endpoint security setup may include a host firewall, encryption, web or network protection, attack-surface reduction, or centralized management of device settings. These are possible parts of an endpoint security program, not features guaranteed in every product.

The result may be a status report, an alert for an administrator, a block or quarantine action, or guidance to investigate or remediate an issue. What the system can report is bounded by what it can observe and how it is configured.

How endpoint checks differ from an antivirus scan

An antivirus scan is one kind of endpoint check, typically focused on finding malicious software. Endpoint security is broader: it can also involve ongoing behavior monitoring, event investigation, response actions, vulnerability and configuration assessment, and other device protections. EDR adds visibility into activity and capabilities for investigation and response; it is not simply another name for a one-time antivirus scan. The exact combination varies by deployment.

SonicWall TZ270W Wireless Gen7 Firewall | SMB Wi-Fi Security Appliance with 2 Gbps Firewall Speed, Integrated Wireless Radios, Threat Protection, and Cloud Management (02-SSC-2823)
  • SonicWall TZ270W Appliance Only - No Service Subscription (02-SSC-2823) - Combines enterprise-grade firewalling with integrated 802.11ac Wave 2 Wi-Fi to deliver secure wired and wireless connectivity in one compact device for small offices and clinics.
  • Blocks zero-day threats and ransomware with Capture ATP sandboxing enhanced by RTDMI, plus IPS and anti-malware scanning for layered protection.
  • Eliminates the need for separate access points in smaller spaces thanks to built-in high-speed wireless that is simple to deploy and manage.
  • Supports VPN, SD-WAN, and TLS 1.3 decryption to secure hybrid cloud access and remote workers while maintaining usability and performance.
  • Delivers gigabit performance with up to 750,000 concurrent connections to handle growth in users, devices, and SaaS applications.

Product behavior can also depend on how security tools are configured together. Microsoft says that when a non-Microsoft antimalware client is used, Microsoft Defender Antivirus runs in passive mode. In that mode, it does not perform real-time, scheduled, or on-demand scans. Microsoft also notes that Defender for Endpoint relies on Defender Antivirus for some functions, including file scanning, and recommends configuring security intelligence and platform updates. This is specific to Microsoft’s documented setup, not a general rule for other endpoint products. See Microsoft’s compatibility guidance.

What a clean result does—and does not—tell you

A clean check means the configured tool did not report a finding within the scope it examined at that time. It cannot establish that no threat exists. Results depend on the product’s visibility, configuration, update state, permissions, and operating mode; a check may not cover every file, behavior, vulnerability, or device condition.

WatchGuard Firebox M290 High Availability Firewall
  • Enterprise-grade prevention, detection, correlation and response from the perimeter to the endpoint with our Total Security Suite.
  • Gain critical insights about network security, from anywhere and at any time, with WatchGuard Cloud.
  • Built-in compliance reports, including PCI and HIPAA, mean one-click access to the data you need to ensure compliance requirements are met.
  • Up to 18 Gbps firewall throughput. Turn on all additional security services and still see up to 2.4 Gbps throughput.

For an organization, a report is one input to a security decision. Administrators may use findings to investigate an event, change a policy, update software, or isolate or remediate a device. A check improves visibility, but it is not a security certificate.

What organizations should compare when evaluating endpoint security

Rather than assume every product offers the same checks, compare the capabilities and operating requirements that matter to your environment:

WatchGuard Trade up to WatchGuard Firebox M290 with 3-yr Basic Security Suite
  • Enterprise-grade prevention, detection, correlation and response from the perimeter to the endpoint with our Total Security Suite.
  • Gain critical insights about network security, from anywhere and at any time, with WatchGuard Cloud.
  • Built-in compliance reports, including PCI and HIPAA, mean one-click access to the data you need to ensure compliance requirements are met.
  • Up to 18 Gbps firewall throughput. Turn on all additional security services and still see up to 2.4 Gbps throughput.
  • Which endpoint types and operating systems are supported?
  • Does the system provide malware prevention, behavioral detection, or both?
  • What vulnerability and configuration information can it show?
  • Which investigation and response actions are available?
  • How are devices managed centrally, and what integrations are supported?
  • What update, policy, permission, and compatibility requirements apply?

These are functional comparison dimensions, not a ranking of particular vendors or products. The right coverage depends on the devices, operating systems, policies, and response needs in the organization.
