Windows 11 has three different ways to let another person see or control a PC. Use Quick Assist for a one-time help session that you approve on screen, Windows Remote Assistance when you want to send a trusted helper an invitation, or Remote Desktop for continuing access to a Windows 11 PC as though you were sitting in front of it. Remote Desktop requires Windows 11 Pro on the PC being accessed; the connecting device can run another supported Windows edition or a supported non-Windows operating system.

Choose the workflow before changing a setting. Quick Assist and Remote Assistance are support sessions in which the person at the PC participates. Remote Desktop is an access service configured on the target PC and used later with the PC name and an account sign-in. The sections below give the exact Windows 11 paths for each option.

Which Windows 11 remote-control option fits your situation?

Option Best for Approval and connection Host requirement Management considerations
Quick Assist A family member, friend, or other trusted person helping once The helper shares a six-digit code; the recipient enters it, allows screen sharing, and separately approves full control Windows 11 with Quick Assist installed; WebView2 is required Microsoft Store installation can be blocked on work or school devices
Windows Remote Assistance An invitation-based session with a trusted helper Remote Assistance is enabled on the Remote tab, then an invitation is created using the available Easy Connect or invitation route Use the built-in Remote Assistance feature; no Pro requirement is stated for this workflow Organizational policy and network configuration may affect invitations
Remote Desktop Accessing your own PC from another device over time Turn on Remote Desktop, record the PC name, then connect with Remote Desktop Connection or the supported client app and sign in The target PC must run Windows 11 Pro Work, school, and network deployment settings may require administrator help

These are different security models. Quick Assist exposes the screen only after the recipient accepts the session, and taking control requires a second approval. Remote Assistance also starts from an invitation. Remote Desktop is enabled in advance and is intended for later connections, so enable it only on a PC you control and protect the account used to sign in.

Enable Quick Assist for a one-time help session

Quick Assist is the simplest choice when someone is already at the Windows 11 PC and can approve each action. The helper cannot begin just by knowing the PC name: the recipient must enter a code and approve screen sharing. Microsoft documents the current setup in its Quick Assist support guide.

Install or open Quick Assist

  1. Open Start and search for Quick Assist. You can also press Ctrl + Windows logo key + Q.
  2. If Windows cannot find the app, install Quick Assist from Microsoft Store, then open it. Windows 11 requires WebView2 for the app. WebView2 is normally already present with Windows 11 or Microsoft Edge; if it is missing, Quick Assist installs it when the app opens.
  3. On a work or school computer, Store installation may be disabled by organizational policy. If the installation is blocked, ask the IT administrator rather than attempting to bypass the policy.

The browser-based Quick Assist experience is not a general substitute for the app. Microsoft identifies that browser version for interactions with verified Microsoft support agents, not ordinary friend-to-friend assistance.

Start the session as the helper

  1. Open Quick Assist and select Help someone.
  2. Sign in if Quick Assist requests it, then wait for the app to display a six-digit security code.
  3. Send that six-digit code to the person sitting at the PC. Share it through a channel you trust; the code is for this session, not a permanent password.

Accept help on the PC being supported

  1. Open Quick Assist on the recipient’s Windows 11 PC.
  2. Enter the helper’s six-digit code and submit it.
  3. Review the prompt and allow the connection and screen sharing. The helper can now see the screen and use the available pointer, annotation, and chat tools.

Approve or end full control

Seeing the screen is not the same as controlling it. If the helper needs to operate the PC, the helper selects Request control. The recipient must separately approve that request. Keep the session at screen-sharing level when that is sufficient.

  1. To grant control, review the request and select the approval option shown by Quick Assist.
  2. To withdraw control while the session continues, select Cancel control.
  3. When the work is finished, select Leave to end the Quick Assist session.

Quick Assist is appropriate when the person needing help can remain at the keyboard to approve the connection and any later control request. It is not a way to configure unattended access.

Use Windows Remote Assistance with an invitation

Windows Remote Assistance is an invitation-based feature for asking a trusted person to help. It is separate from Quick Assist and Remote Desktop. Before creating an invitation, enable the feature through the classic Remote settings.

Allow Remote Assistance connections

  1. Search Windows for remote assistance.
  2. Select Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer.
  3. In the Remote tab, select Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer.
  4. Select OK to save the setting.

This setting allows the invitation workflow to be used. It does not turn the PC into a general-purpose Remote Desktop host.

Create and send an invitation

  1. Search Windows for Remote Assistance and open the assistance tool.
  2. Choose the option to invite someone you trust to help.
  3. Follow the prompts to create the invitation and deliver it to that person using a secure method.

The interface can offer Easy Connect or an invitation route, depending on whether Easy Connect has been used before and on the contact status. Select the route presented by your installation and complete its prompts. The person at the PC should remain involved so the invitation and connection are expected.

When Remote Assistance is the better choice

  • Use it when your helper should join through an explicit invitation rather than a short Quick Assist code.
  • Use Quick Assist instead when you want the quickest code-and-approval flow and the app is available.
  • Do not treat Remote Assistance as a replacement for ongoing access. For that requirement, evaluate Remote Desktop and the host-edition requirement first.

On a managed computer, invitation behavior can depend on administrator and network policy. If the feature is disabled or the invitation cannot be used, contact the organization that manages the PC instead of changing security policy on your own. Microsoft describes the enablement path and support-scam precautions in its Remote Assistance guidance.

Enable Remote Desktop on a Windows 11 Pro PC

Remote Desktop is the option for connecting to a PC later from another device and working on it as if you were seated at the machine. The host, or target, PC must run Windows 11 Pro. A connecting device can use any Windows edition or another operating system supported by Microsoft’s client applications. Windows 11 Home can therefore act as a client to another PC, but it cannot serve as the Remote Desktop host in this documented setup.

Turn on Remote Desktop at the target PC

  1. Sign in to the PC that you want to access remotely.
  2. Open Settings > System > Remote Desktop.
  3. Turn on Remote Desktop.
  4. Confirm the change when Windows asks.
  5. Record the PC name shown on that page. You will enter this name on the connecting device.

Use the exact PC name displayed by Windows. The setting and name are configured on the target, not on the device from which you plan to connect.

Connect from another Windows device

  1. On the client device, open Remote Desktop Connection from Windows Search.
  2. Enter the target PC’s recorded name.
  3. Select Connect.
  4. Sign in with an account accepted by the target PC when prompted.

Microsoft’s Remote Desktop instructions also direct macOS and iOS users to Windows App, and Android users to the Remote Desktop app. The client software does not remove the Windows 11 Pro requirement on the host.

What this setup does and does not establish

Turning on the switch and recording the PC name completes the consumer setup described here, but it does not guarantee connectivity across every network. Company firewalls, VPN requirements, router configuration, account policy, and other deployment choices vary. Microsoft does not make those managed-network settings part of this basic consumer flow. If the PC belongs to an employer or school, ask the IT department for the approved connection method and account requirements.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Requirements, cost, and device planning

None of these documented workflows requires a special keyboard, adapter, or other physical product. Quick Assist and Windows Remote Assistance are Windows support features; Quick Assist may need a Microsoft Store installation and the WebView2 component. Remote Desktop’s important prerequisite is the Windows edition on the host, not the brand of the client device.

If the target PC runs Windows 11 Home, changing a setting cannot make it a Remote Desktop host in this setup. You would need a PC running Windows 11 Pro, and any edition upgrade or license purchase should be checked against Microsoft’s current licensing terms. This guide does not assume a particular upgrade price. A Windows 11 Home computer can still be the device from which you connect to another supported Remote Desktop host.

Before starting, identify who will be physically present, whether the connection is one-time or recurring, and which organization controls the PC. That simple check prevents two common mistakes: enabling Remote Desktop when a consent-based support session was intended, or expecting Quick Assist to provide unattended access. On managed work or school devices, administrators may control Store access, invitations, accounts, firewalls, VPNs, or approved client applications.

How approval and control differ during a session

Quick Assist has two separate permission moments. First, the recipient enters the six-digit code and permits the helper to connect and share the screen. Second, the recipient responds to Request control if the helper needs to operate the PC. You can keep the helper at viewing, pointer, annotation, and chat capabilities without granting full control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Remote Assistance begins with an invitation and should likewise be expected by the person at the PC. Its enablement setting makes invitations possible; it is not a blanket instruction to accept every incoming request. Remote Desktop follows a different pattern: the host is enabled ahead of time, and a later connection uses the PC name and an authorized account. Because the recipient may not be present at the moment of connection, treat the host setting and account as continuing access and review them with the PC owner or administrator.

Security rules for every remote-control method

Accept only an expected helper

Remote control gives another person visibility into the screen and, when approved, the ability to operate the computer. Allow a connection only for someone you know and expect. This is especially important for Quick Assist, where a caller may ask you to read a code or approve control.

Recognize technical-support scams

Microsoft warns about unsolicited technical-support contacts. Do not grant a stranger access because a pop-up, phone caller, email, or chat message claims that your PC is infected. Microsoft says to allow a helper to connect only when you initiated the interaction by contacting Microsoft Support directly. If you did not start that support request, close the contact and do not provide a Quick Assist code or approve a control request.

Troubleshoot the common setup problems

Quick Assist is missing

Search Start for Quick Assist first. If it is not installed, use Microsoft Store. If Store installation is unavailable on a work or school device, that restriction may be intentional; ask the administrator. Also allow Quick Assist to install WebView2 if Windows reports that component is absent.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The recipient cannot join the Quick Assist session

Confirm that the recipient opened Quick Assist, entered the complete six-digit code, submitted it, and approved screen sharing. A helper cannot move directly to full control: the recipient must approve the separate Request control prompt.

Remote Assistance invitations cannot be created

Recheck the exact path: search for remote assistance, select Allow Remote Assistance invitations to be sent from this computer, enable Allow Remote Assistance connections to this computer on the Remote tab, and select OK. If policy or network controls still block the invitation, involve the administrator responsible for the PC.

Remote Desktop will not connect

  • Verify that the target, not merely the client, runs Windows 11 Pro.
  • On the target, confirm Settings > System > Remote Desktop is turned on.
  • Check that you entered the PC name shown on the target’s Remote Desktop page.
  • Confirm that you are signing in with an account permitted on that PC.
  • For an employer- or school-managed device, ask IT whether a VPN, firewall rule, or approved client is required; those deployment details are not universal.

A practical decision checklist

  1. Need one-time help while someone is at the PC? Start with Quick Assist. The six-digit code and approval prompts keep the recipient involved.
  2. Need an invitation-based support session? Enable Windows Remote Assistance from the Remote tab, then create an invitation for the trusted helper.
  3. Need to work on your own PC later? Use Remote Desktop, but first verify Windows 11 Pro on the target and record its PC name.
  4. Is the PC managed by work or school? Expect Store, account, network, or feature restrictions and consult the IT administrator.
  5. Was the contact unsolicited? Do not provide a code or approve control. End the interaction unless you initiated support with Microsoft through a trusted channel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can someone control my Windows 11 PC with only the Quick Assist code?

No. The recipient must enter the six-digit code and allow the connection and screen sharing. If the helper then selects Request control, the recipient must approve that separate request. Cancel control or select Leave when the task is finished.

Does Quick Assist work if the app is not installed?

Install Quick Assist from Microsoft Store. Windows 11 normally already has the required WebView2 component through Windows or Microsoft Edge; if it is missing, Quick Assist installs it when opened. A work or school policy can block Store installation, in which case contact IT.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Is the Quick Assist browser version for ordinary family support?

Microsoft identifies the browser-based experience for interactions with verified Microsoft support agents. For ordinary friend-to-friend help, use the Windows Quick Assist app and its six-digit code flow.

What is the difference between Remote Assistance and Remote Desktop?

Remote Assistance is an invitation-based support session that starts with the person at the PC enabling the Remote tab setting and creating an invitation. Remote Desktop is intended for later access to a host PC and uses its PC name and an authorized account. The Remote Desktop host must run Windows 11 Pro.

Can Windows 11 Home host a Remote Desktop connection?

Not in the documented setup. The target or host PC must run Windows 11 Pro. A Windows 11 Home device can still act as the client connecting to another supported host.

Do I need special hardware or a paid accessory for these methods?

No physical product is required by the documented Windows workflows. The relevant prerequisites are the Quick Assist app and WebView2, the Remote Assistance setting, or Windows 11 Pro on a Remote Desktop host. Check Microsoft’s current licensing terms before purchasing an edition upgrade.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why does Remote Desktop still fail after I turn it on?

Confirm that the target—not just the connecting device—runs Windows 11 Pro, that Remote Desktop is enabled under Settings > System > Remote Desktop, that you used the displayed PC name, and that your account is allowed. Managed networks may additionally require an administrator-approved VPN, firewall rule, or client.

How can I avoid a remote-support scam?

Do not accept a connection or share a Quick Assist code with an unsolicited caller, pop-up, email, or chat contact. Microsoft advises allowing a helper to connect only when you initiated the interaction by contacting Microsoft Support directly through a trusted channel.

The Bottom Line

Choose Quick Assist when a trusted person is present and you want code-based, consent-driven help. Choose Windows Remote Assistance when an invitation workflow fits better. Choose Remote Desktop for continuing access, but verify that the target PC runs Windows 11 Pro, record its PC name, and confirm the account and network requirements with IT when the device is managed. In every case, approve access only for an expected helper and end the session or revoke control as soon as the task is complete.
