Emma Jenkins is the new owner of Taylors Butchers in Earlsdon, Coventry, taking over the family business after three decades running a care agency. Former owner Stuart Taylor is training her and will continue working in the shop three days a week while the handover takes place.
Who bought Taylors Butchers?
Jenkins bought Taylors Butchers after selling the care agency she had run with her mother for 30 years. The sale was completed after she viewed the butcher’s premises on an impulse and decided the opportunity felt right.
She told BBC News West Midlands that she had initially “just thought I’d go and have a look.” Seeing Taylor behind the counter and learning more about the family-run business helped convince her to proceed. “It just felt right somehow,” she said.

Why did Emma Jenkins leave care work?
Jenkins sold the care agency in December 2024. She briefly moved into a corporate job afterward, but decided that corporate work did not suit her. Buying a food business offered a complete change from her previous career.
The physical demands are very different from managing a care organisation. Jenkins described the contrast plainly: “Care was mentally draining. This is physically draining – I’ve gone from one extreme to the other.” She said the first weeks as a butcher-shop owner had been a roller coaster and involved hard graft, but added that she was enjoying the work.

How is the ownership handover working?
Taylor sold the shop but has not disappeared from it. He trained Jenkins after the sale and plans to work Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays. His continued presence gives the new owner practical guidance while customers and suppliers get used to the change.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhat Taylor is teaching her
The arrangement allows Jenkins to learn the shop’s routines from the person who has run it for more than two decades. It also preserves knowledge about the business’s customers, products and daily operation that would otherwise be difficult to transfer in a conventional sale.

What happens to the shop during the transition?
Jenkins intends to keep Taylors Butchers operating as it did before the sale rather than immediately redesigning the business. Her stated approach is continuity: learn the existing operation, maintain its local service and make changes only where they are needed.
How old is Taylors Butchers?
Taylors Butchers was founded in 1938 by Percy Taylor, Stuart Taylor’s grandfather. Stuart said his father later ran the shop, making the business a three-generation Taylor family operation before Jenkins became the owner.

What does the sale mean for customers?
Taylor said customers had supported his family for “three generations” and that the shop would remain at the heart of the community. That commitment is consistent with Jenkins’s plan to keep the business running in its established form.

For shoppers, the immediate change is therefore ownership rather than a announced change to the shop’s identity. Taylor’s scheduled days in the store provide a visible link with the previous generation, while Jenkins takes on the long-term responsibility for the business.

The wider lesson in this career change
Jenkins’s move illustrates two sides of taking over an established independent business. Her care career supplied decades of management experience, but the butcher’s work requires new practical skills and physical stamina. Taylor’s role shows why mentoring can matter in a small-business succession: the buyer gains hands-on instruction, and the seller can help protect the relationships and routines built over many years.
The result is a change of ownership without an abrupt break in the shop’s history. Taylors Butchers remains the same Earlsdon business founded in 1938, but its next chapter is being led by someone outside the Taylor family.
