Ember Mug 3’s clearest upgrade is a button that lets you choose a temperature on the mug itself; the app is optional for basic use. But the “bitter taste” in this review’s premise is not an established product defect: Ember’s official materials do not identify a taste issue or its cause, and no independent tasting test is established here. The buying decision therefore rests on its controls, manufacturer-stated runtime, cleaning rules, and price—not an unverified taste claim.
What changed in Ember Mug 3?
Ember announced Mug 3 on September 16, 2026. Its main practical change is direct temperature selection on the mug, alongside a row of LEDs that shows the selected setting and battery level. Ember also lists top-rack dishwasher safety and an included sliding lid among the upgrades. Ember Technologies’ launch announcement describes adjusting drinking temperature without opening the app.
Five temperature presets on the mug
A button cycles through five fixed presets: 125°F, 130°F, 135°F, 140°F, and 145°F. The default is 135°F. Ember says these on-mug presets cannot currently be customized; the app offers more precise temperature selection within its supported range.

Ember says Mug 3 works out of the box without the app. The current Ember app supports the mug and adds precise temperature control, custom LED color, battery details, and automatic firmware updates. That makes the mug’s physical controls useful for someone who wants a simple setting, while app setup remains necessary for finer adjustments.

How much does Mug 3 cost?
Ember’s U.S. FAQ listed the following prices on October 7, 2026. These are manufacturer-listed prices, not a guarantee of current stock or checkout price.

The $20 difference buys a larger stated capacity, but the provided official specifications do not establish that either size keeps a drink warm longer. Choose based on the volume you usually pour, and check Ember’s listing for current pricing and availability.

How long does the battery last?
Ember’s published runtime figures use different conditions and should not be treated as one guaranteed battery-life number:
- FAQ estimate at 135°F on a full charge: about 90 minutes for the 10 oz Mug 3 and 80 minutes for the 14 oz model.
- Product-page claim with the included sliding lid: over three hours. Ember says runtime varies with ambient conditions, lid use, and starting temperature.
- On the charging coaster: Ember describes all-day use while the mug is on the coaster.
These are Ember’s claims; no independent battery measurement is established here. The differing FAQ and product-page contexts matter: the over-three-hour claim is specifically presented with the lid, while the FAQ gives size-specific estimates at 135°F on a full charge.

Is Ember Mug 3 really dishwasher safe?
Ember’s guidance is specific: wash the mug on the top rack only and use a low-temperature cycle. The sliding lid can also go on the top rack. Ember’s FAQ states, “Yes, with two rules: top rack only, and low temperature cycle only.”
- Do not put the charging coaster in the dishwasher.
- Never immerse the coaster in water.
- Let the mug dry completely before putting it back on the charging coaster.
So “dishwasher safe” does not apply to the complete charging setup, and it does not mean any rack or cycle is suitable.

What are the warranty, returns, and coaster compatibility?
Ember’s FAQ and current product page describe a one-year limited warranty for the mug and lifetime coverage for the charging coaster. The FAQ describes mug coverage for defects in materials and workmanship; the product page refers to manufacturing defects. Read the applicable warranty terms for the exact coverage and exclusions.
Ember’s product page lists returns of unused mugs within 30 days of delivery and a $10 restocking fee. Confirm the current return conditions before ordering, since the listed window and fee do not establish eligibility for a used or damaged item.

Ember’s FAQ says Mug 3 works with a Mug 2 coaster or a first-generation Ember coaster. That compatibility statement does not establish compatibility with third-party bases or unrelated accessories.
Does Ember Mug 3 leave a bitter taste?
That concern remains unanswered by the available product information. Ember’s FAQ, product page, and launch announcement do not document a bitter taste, identify a cause, or establish that Mug 3 causes one. Without a direct taste test or reliable evidence tied to this model, it would be misleading to attribute the phrase to a coating, material, or other product feature.
For buyers, this means the taste question should not be treated as either a confirmed flaw or a disproven concern. If taste is your deciding factor, the cited manufacturer specifications cannot settle it; consider trying the mug under a return policy whose terms you have checked.

- It may suit you if you want to select among five common temperatures on the mug, value app-optional basic use, and can work within the stated cleaning and charging precautions.
- Think carefully if you need a verified long runtime without the lid, want customizable presets directly on the mug, or are buying specifically to solve or avoid a taste problem. Ember’s published claims do not establish those outcomes.
- Compare the sizes by capacity first: Ember lists 10 oz and 14 oz options at different U.S. prices, but does not provide independent evidence here that one performs better.
