Ember Mug 2 is best understood as a temperature-maintaining mug, not a kettle. Set it between 120°F and 145°F, and Ember says it holds that temperature within ±0.5°F while you read, watch television or work. For a long evening tea, that can prevent the gradual cooling that turns the last few sips disappointing. The trade-off is a charging-coaster routine, limited off-coaster battery life and hand-washing only.
What Ember Mug 2 actually does
The Mug 2 uses built-in heating and temperature sensing to maintain a selected drinking temperature. Ember’s current specifications cover 120°F to 145°F in 1°F increments, with a stated hold of ±0.5°F. Ember describes this as “Your set temperature, held steady ± 0.5°.” That precision is useful for tea drinkers who have a preferred temperature and want it to remain stable through a slow routine.
It does not boil water, rapidly heat a fresh drink or bring a completely cold cup back to serving temperature. An independent BBC Science Focus review specifically notes that the mug “doesn’t reheat cold liquids.” Start with tea that is already at a drinkable temperature; the Mug 2 is designed to maintain it.

How it fits a nightly tea routine
Choose a temperature once, then let the mug hold it
After setup, the mug remembers your preferred setting. Ember lists tea as a use case, and its app includes a Tea Timer. You can therefore brew tea normally, pour it into the mug, select a comfortable temperature and continue with your evening without repeatedly reheating the drink.

Phone-free use is possible, but limited
You do not need a phone every time you use the mug. Without the app, Mug 2 operates at its default 135°F. Changing the temperature, assigning presets and using Tea Timer require the Ember app. That makes the app optional for a fixed-temperature habit, but important if you switch among green, black, herbal or other teas with different serving preferences.
10 oz versus 14 oz: the practical differences

The larger mug gives you more tea per fill but has the shorter published untethered rating. Neither figure guarantees a particular result in every home. Room temperature, whether you use a lid and how warm the tea was when poured all affect battery demand.

Coaster dependence and charging behavior
On the charging coaster, the Mug 2 can maintain temperature for extended use, which is why it suits a desk, bedside table or reading chair with a nearby outlet. Off the coaster, plan around the finite battery window: up to 90 minutes for the 10 oz model and up to 80 minutes for the 14 oz model at the stated conditions. Ideal Home’s January 17, 2026 hands-on account reported about 90 minutes of untethered use and all-day use when the mug stayed on its coaster. That is one reviewer’s experience, not a guarantee.
If your ritual regularly lasts several hours, place the coaster where you normally read or watch television. The product’s strongest use case is continuous maintenance while docked, rather than carrying a hot drink around the house all night.

Setup and everyday use
- Charge the mug. Place it on the charging coaster before the first use and keep the coaster connected to power for extended sessions.
- Install and pair the Ember app. Use the app during setup if you want a temperature other than the 135°F default, saved presets or Tea Timer.
- Set your target. Choose a value from 120°F to 145°F in 1°F increments. The mug remembers the preferred setting after setup.
- Pour already-hot tea. Ember’s system maintains temperature; it is not a replacement for a kettle and will not quickly recover a cold drink.
- Keep it on the coaster for long sessions. For a short trip away from the outlet, use the battery window as a guide rather than assuming the maximum rating.
- Wash it by hand. Do not put the mug in a dishwasher or microwave.
Important limitations before you buy
- No cold-drink recovery: A cup that has gone cold needs another heating method. Mug 2 is not a rapid reheater.
- No microwave: Heating the mug in a microwave is not supported.
- No dishwasher: Hand-washing is required, adding a maintenance step compared with an ordinary ceramic mug.
- App dependence for advanced controls: The default 135°F mode works without a phone, but temperature changes, presets and Tea Timer do not.
- Finite portable runtime: Off-coaster use ends after the battery is depleted, with published maximums of up to 1.5 hours for 10 oz and up to 80 minutes for 14 oz at 135°F.
Is Ember Mug 2 worth it for a slow nightly tea ritual?
It is a good fit if your main frustration is tea cooling while you read, stream a show or work, and you are willing to keep a charging coaster nearby. The ability to hold a chosen temperature steadily is the meaningful benefit; it turns the mug into a controlled part of the ritual rather than another vessel that gradually loses heat.
It is a poor fit if you expect kettle-like heating, routinely carry tea away from a power source for several hours, need dishwasher convenience or do not want to use an app for anything beyond the default setting. Choose the 10 oz model when a smaller serving and the longer advertised untethered window matter more. Choose 14 oz when capacity matters more than the shorter off-coaster rating.

The honest verdict is conditional: Ember Mug 2 can make a long nightly tea session noticeably more consistent, especially on its coaster, but it earns that convenience through charging-coaster placement, hand-washing and the need to start with hot tea.
