Embedded revenue financing uses data already generated in commerce and payment platforms to assess eligibility, set an offer and collect repayment. The clearest documented signals are sales and payment activity—not a universal feed of bank transactions or accounting records. What a provider checks, who supplies the money and how repayment works depend on the product and country.
What embedded lending means
Embedded lending places a financing offer inside a platform or software workflow a business already uses, such as a commerce or payments account. The platform may connect to a financing provider, share permitted account data and display an offer; another company may make the underwriting decision, provide capital, service the account or collect payments. A familiar platform brand therefore does not, by itself, identify the lender or the party responsible for servicing.
In a typical flow, the business authorizes a connection or applies through the platform, relevant transaction information is reviewed, an offer is presented, and funds and repayments move through specified accounts or balances. Stripe describes this API-based pattern, including transaction history and revenue patterns, in its overview of white-label embedded lending. Its discussion of business benefits is the provider’s own description, not independent evidence that every platform will achieve those benefits.

| Data category | Documented examples | What the documentation establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Commerce and sales activity | Sales volume, frequency of sales days, total orders and successfully shipped orders | Shopify says eligibility and offer size are primarily based on sales performance on Shopify. See Shopify Capital eligibility. |
| Payment processing | Overall processing volume and processing history | Stripe says it uses connected-account payment activity, including volume and history, to extend financing offers. See Stripe Capital for Platforms documentation. |
| Payments outside the platform | Non-Stripe payment data | Stripe says this may be shared to support eligibility review and help determine financing amount and premium rate. This is a documented Stripe option, not proof that every provider obtains outside payment records. |
| Bank transactions | Transaction-level history from a business bank account | The cited product pages do not establish that bank transaction feeds are standard underwriting inputs. A bank account used for disbursement or repayment is not, by itself, evidence that its transaction history was assessed. |
| Accounting records | Bookkeeping ledgers or data from accounting software | The cited pages do not establish how commonly accounting records are used or name a standard accounting-software connection. Treat access and use as provider- and product-specific unless the provider’s current terms say otherwise. |
Why commerce data is not the same as bank or accounting data
Commerce and processor data describe activity observed within a particular platform: orders, fulfillment, sales days or payments processed. They may offer useful visibility into business performance, but only to the extent that the data are available and representative. A business taking substantial sales through other channels may not be fully represented by one platform’s records.
Bank transaction data is a different category: it can show cash moving into and out of an account, but a linked account may serve only to receive funds or make repayments. Accounting data is different again, reflecting records maintained in bookkeeping systems. Before authorizing access, check which account or dataset is requested, whether it is used for underwriting or only for money movement, and what the consent and data-sharing terms permit.

How platforms turn data into an offer
Shopify Capital
Shopify says it continually evaluates businesses for eligibility. Its eligibility documentation identifies sales volume, how frequently sales occur, total orders and successfully shipped orders as factors; the business does not apply through a conventional process to create eligibility, and seeing an offer does not guarantee funding. Shopify also says offer eligibility and size are primarily based on sales performance on its platform. See Shopify’s eligibility explanation.

Stripe Capital for Platforms
Stripe says it and its financial partner review connected accounts using payment activity, including processing volume and history. Its documentation also describes sharing non-Stripe payment data to support eligibility assessment and determine financing amount and premium rate. Platforms can deliver offers through email, API or webhook integrations, or embedded components; acceptance may take place on a Stripe-hosted Capital page or within a component.
Stripe’s documentation describes different products and partner roles by market. In the United States, its platform documentation lists merchant cash advances, flex loans, fixed-term loans and lines of credit. In the United Kingdom, it describes a merchant cash advance and a loan advance, and identifies YouLend as the partner handling offer questions and collections. Those descriptions apply to the specified Stripe flows, not to embedded lending generally. In its US documentation, Stripe says funds are deposited within two business days and repayment is automatically collected as a fixed percentage of sales; timing and mechanics should not be assumed for another provider or market. Details are in Stripe’s platform documentation.

Clearco
Clearco describes its e-commerce advance as a purchase of a portion of future revenue rather than a loan. Its FAQ states that it funds businesses with monthly revenue of $100,000 or more over six or more months and that fees start at 3.5%. Those are Clearco’s own stated qualification and pricing terms, accessed October 7, 2026—not industry thresholds or market averages. They can change, so review the provider’s current FAQ and the actual offer.

Repayment depends on the legal structure
“Revenue financing” is an umbrella label, not a single legal product. A future-receivables purchase, a loan and a line of credit may have different repayment obligations and legal treatment. The contract and the applicable jurisdiction determine what the business owes, how payments are calculated and whether there are minimums or fixed schedules.
- Future-receivables purchase: A provider purchases a portion of future revenue. Stripe’s UK documentation describes its merchant cash advance as a purchase of future receivables, with payments varying with processing volume and no fixed schedule. Clearco likewise says its advance purchases a portion of future revenue and is not a loan.
- Loan: A loan generally has principal to repay and may carry interest and a defined schedule. Stripe’s UK documentation describes its loan advance as having principal, interest and a fixed payment schedule.
- Other financing products: Stripe’s US platform documentation also lists flex loans, fixed-term loans and lines of credit. The names alone do not establish the precise cost or repayment terms; check the offer and contract.
Revenue-linked collection can adjust with sales under some structures, but do not assume every payment falls in weak-sales periods or that there is no minimum. Stripe describes daily-sales deductions for its revenue-linked repayments. Shopify’s US page describes daily loan payments as a percentage of sales associated with the Shopify account. The applicable agreement controls the collection method, minimums and fallback arrangements.
A flat fee is not automatically comparable to an interest rate or APR. Compare the total amount due, timing and frequency of payments, any minimums, and consequences of slower sales—not just a percentage or product label.
What to verify before accepting an offer
- Identify the product and jurisdiction. Confirm whether the offer is a loan, receivables purchase, line of credit or another structure, and which country’s terms apply.
- Find out who does what. Identify the underwriting decision-maker, capital provider, servicer and collection party. A platform may provide the interface without supplying the funds.
- Check the data connection. Determine whether access covers platform sales, processor records, outside payment activity, bank transactions or accounting records—and whether each is used to underwrite, disburse or collect.
- Read the full cost and repayment terms. Check the total repayment amount, fees or interest, payment formula, frequency, any fixed minimums, collection account and what happens if sales fall or processing is interrupted.
- Review consent and data permissions. Understand what information will be shared, with which parties, for what purpose and under what terms.
- Confirm current market-specific details. Eligibility, partners, funding timing, repayment rails and product availability can change by country and over time; rely on the current offer and provider documentation, not a description of a different market’s flow.
What the available evidence does not show
The cited provider pages name particular inputs and product mechanics, but they do not disclose general scoring weights or establish that data access causes better credit outcomes. They also do not show that every embedded lender routinely connects to bank feeds or accounting ledgers. Treat an offer as specific to its provider, product, platform and jurisdiction, and evaluate its actual data permissions and contract rather than inferring them from the platform branding.
