EMALS and steam catapults perform the same job: they accelerate an aircraft along a carrier deck until it reaches flying speed. The difference is how they deliver and control that energy. A steam catapult uses high-pressure steam from the ship’s steam system and traditional launch machinery. The Electromagnetic Aircraft Launch System (EMALS) uses stored kinetic energy, solid-state electrical power conversion, an electromagnetic launch motor, and computer-based control and monitoring. The U.S. Navy describes EMALS as smoother, more precisely controllable, and suitable for a wider range of aircraft, but those are Navy-stated capabilities rather than independently quantified comparisons of every launch or maintenance cycle.
What a carrier catapult has to do
Carrier aircraft cannot normally take off from a ship’s deck using runway length alone. The deck is short, the ship is moving, and the aircraft must reach a safe launch speed before it reaches the bow. A catapult connects to the aircraft’s launch bar, applies a controlled force over the catapult track, and releases the aircraft at the required end speed. The aircraft’s own engines provide thrust throughout the launch; the catapult supplies the additional acceleration that the deck cannot provide by itself.
Both systems therefore share the same operational sequence:

- The catapult accelerates the aircraft along the track.
- The launch bar disengages at the end of the stroke, allowing the aircraft to fly away.
- The catapult is reset for the next launch while the aircraft climbs away.
The launch system is only one part of carrier aviation. Aircraft engines, flight-deck procedures, arresting gear, elevators, deck layout, power generation, crew training, and weather all affect the carrier’s output. A higher sortie figure for one carrier class cannot automatically be assigned to its catapult alone.

How EMALS works
Stored kinetic energy and electrical conversion
EMALS does not simply replace a steam cylinder with a magnetic rail. NAVAIR describes a complete launch system that combines stored kinetic energy, solid-state electrical power conversion, a linear electromagnetic launch motor, computer control, monitoring, and automation. The ship stores energy in rotating machinery; power-conversion equipment releases that energy in a controlled electrical waveform to the launch motor. The motor then produces the force that pulls the aircraft’s launch shuttle down the track.
This architecture separates energy storage from the short, intense power pulse required for a launch. The control system can shape the force applied through the stroke instead of relying on the pressure behavior of a steam system alone. Exact equipment arrangements depend on the carrier design, so “electric” does not mean that the launch energy comes directly from a battery or directly from a reactor at the instant the aircraft moves.
Computer control, monitoring, and automation
EMALS uses computerized controls and monitoring to set and supervise a launch profile. The system must account for aircraft weight and the required end speed, then coordinate energy release, motor force, shuttle position, and safety interlocks. Sensors and software monitor the launch equipment and report operating conditions to maintenance and control personnel.
NAVAIR says this control architecture enables smoother acceleration and more accurate end-speed control. Those are the Navy’s stated system benefits; the cited description does not provide one universal acceleration curve, a guaranteed speed tolerance, or an independently measured improvement that applies to every aircraft and operating condition.
What the linear motor is doing
The electromagnetic motor creates a moving magnetic field along the catapult track. The launch shuttle follows that field and transfers force through the aircraft’s launch bar. Unlike a conventional rotary motor driving a mechanical cable, the linear motor applies propulsion directly along the launch path. The aircraft still experiences a high-energy acceleration event, but the force can be programmed and adjusted over the stroke.

How a steam catapult works
Steam from the ship’s systems
A steam catapult uses high-pressure steam supplied by the ship’s steam plant. Valves admit steam to a launch-cylinder system, where pressure acts on pistons connected to the aircraft shuttle. The shuttle travels down the track and pulls the aircraft through its launch bar. At the end of the stroke, the system decelerates and resets the shuttle for another launch.
The steam plant must generate, condition, distribute, and recover the working steam while also supporting other ship requirements. The catapult therefore sits inside a larger network of boilers or reactors, piping, valves, pumps, condensers, and controls. The exact arrangement varies by ship class, but the defining contrast with EMALS is the use of steam-driven launch equipment rather than an electromagnetic motor powered through solid-state converters.
Control characteristics
Steam catapults use established mechanical, hydraulic, pneumatic, and electronic control elements to regulate the launch. Operators set the catapult for the aircraft and conditions, and the system controls steam admission and shuttle motion. Steam technology is mature and has decades of operational experience, but its force profile is tied to the behavior of a pressurized fluid system and the mechanical equipment that transmits that force.
A steam catapult can launch aircraft across the carrier’s approved weight and speed envelope. Compatibility is not automatic: each aircraft type must be integrated with the carrier, launch bar, holdback equipment, control settings, and operating procedures.

Control and the launch envelope
Smoother acceleration
NAVAIR presents smoother acceleration as an EMALS advantage. In practical terms, a programmable force profile can reduce abrupt changes in load as the aircraft moves through the stroke. That matters to the airframe, landing gear, launch bar, and payload, especially when a carrier must launch aircraft with different weights and configurations.
“Smoother” does not mean gentle or low-energy. The aircraft still undergoes a rapid, high-force acceleration, and the permitted profile remains bounded by the aircraft’s structural limits and the carrier’s operating procedures. The cited Navy material does not publish a single acceleration number that can be applied to every EMALS launch or directly compared with every steam launch.

End-speed control
Aircraft do not all require the same launch energy. A light aircraft, a heavily loaded strike fighter, and a future unmanned aircraft may have different weight and speed requirements. NAVAIR says EMALS provides more accurate end-speed control, allowing the launch profile to be matched more closely to the aircraft and its load.

Wind over the deck, aircraft weight, engine thrust, configuration, and safety margins continue to affect the launch setting.
Energy capacity
NAVAIR also lists higher launch-energy capacity among EMALS capabilities. The significance is the ability to support a broad range of aircraft weights and future carrier aircraft without designing the system around only one narrow operating point. The Navy’s description names a range from lightweight unmanned aircraft to heavy strike fighters.
That range describes the system’s intended capability. It does not establish that every aircraft in that range has already completed operational launches from every EMALS-equipped carrier. Aircraft compatibility still requires testing, certification, launch-bar and holdback integration, software settings, and approved procedures.
Aircraft compatibility: what “supports more platforms” means
A catapult is compatible with an aircraft only when the complete launch interface works. The aircraft must have a suitable launch bar and structural attachment points; its weight, center of gravity, landing gear, and configuration must fit the launch envelope; and the carrier must have approved procedures and control data for that combination.
Recommended Free Tools
EMALS is intended to broaden the practical envelope because its control system can tailor the launch profile. This is particularly relevant to aircraft that are lighter than traditional carrier fighters, as well as heavier aircraft that need substantial launch energy. Nevertheless, “designed to support” is not the same as “already qualified.” The NAVAIR description does not provide an aircraft-by-aircraft list of completed EMALS qualification events.
Steam catapults can also launch multiple aircraft types. Their long service history demonstrates broad utility, but each new aircraft still needs integration work. A comparison should therefore distinguish the underlying control and energy architecture from the certification status of a particular aircraft-carrier pairing.

Maintenance, space, and crew requirements
Claims made for EMALS
NAVAIR and General Atomics describe EMALS as offering reductions in maintenance burden, equipment footprint, and manpower requirements. Removing large steam distribution components from the launch-system architecture can affect how equipment is arranged below the flight deck. Computerized monitoring may also help technicians identify operating conditions and faults without relying exclusively on manual inspection.
These are attributed program and contractor claims. The cited material does not provide a current, independent comparison of maintenance hours per launch, mean time between failures, lifecycle cost, spare-parts consumption, or the number of sailors required for each system under equivalent operating conditions.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhy a simple “less maintenance” verdict is unsafe
EMALS introduces different technical dependencies, including high-power electrical conversion, rotating energy-storage machinery, control electronics, sensors, software, and electromagnetic equipment. Steam catapults concentrate risk in pressure vessels, valves, piping, cylinders, seals, pumps, and the ship’s steam plant. Each architecture changes the type of maintenance rather than eliminating maintenance altogether.
Carrier crews also maintain the surrounding systems, not just the track. Electrical distribution, cooling, hydraulic equipment, launch-bar interfaces, deck machinery, and safety interlocks can influence availability. A credible lifecycle comparison would need the same mission profile, carrier class, age, maintenance policy, spare-parts rules, and operating tempo for both technologies. Those conditions are not supplied by the cited sources.
Does EMALS produce more carrier sorties?
The Navy’s April 2022 carrier-class comparison lists 120 sustained sorties for the Nimitz class and 160 sustained sorties for the Ford class. The figures come from the CVN 78 Class Program Office and describe whole-carrier design performance, not a controlled experiment comparing one EMALS catapult with one steam catapult.
| Carrier class | Sustained sorties listed in the April 2022 comparison | What the number represents |
|---|---|---|
| Nimitz class | 120 | Class-level sustained sortie-generation figure, not launches per steam catapult. |
| Ford class | 160 | Class-level sustained sortie-generation figure for a carrier design that includes EMALS and other changes, not launches per EMALS catapult. |
Ford-class improvements involve more than the launch motor. Carrier layout, aircraft handling, weapons movement, elevators, arresting gear, power distribution, automation, crew workflows, and other design choices all contribute to sortie generation. The 40-sortie difference should therefore not be presented as the isolated effect of replacing steam with electromagnetic launch equipment.

It is not a count of 10,000 EMALS launches. The total combines two different event types: aircraft launched by EMALS and aircraft recovered by the Advanced Arresting Gear. It also does not, by itself, establish a failure rate, mean time between failures, maintenance hours, or a statistically controlled reliability comparison with a steam catapult.

What pilots have reported
In NAVAIR’s account of the first manned EMALS launch, test pilot Lt. Daniel Radocaj said: The catapult stroke felt similar to a steam catapult and EMALS met all of the expectations I had.
This is one pilot’s account of one test launch. It is useful context for the launch sensation, but it is not a fleet-wide performance evaluation or a substitute for measured acceleration and reliability data.
Source: NAVAIR’s first-launch report.
Why the two systems feel similar to the aircraft
From the cockpit, both systems produce the same essential event: the aircraft is held on the deck, rapidly accelerated, and released at the bow. The pilot’s procedures, aircraft engine thrust, launch-bar engagement, holdback release, and catapult stroke all shape the experience. That is why a pilot can describe an EMALS stroke as similar to a steam-catapult stroke even though the machinery below deck is fundamentally different.
The similarity at release should not obscure the engineering difference. Steam pressure drives pistons and a shuttle; EMALS uses electrical power conversion and a linear electromagnetic motor. The aircraft sees the resulting acceleration, while the carrier must generate, store, control, monitor, and maintain the energy source beneath the deck.
Advantages and trade-offs in practical terms
Where EMALS is intended to improve the launch system
- More adaptable control: Computerized control is intended to tailor the force profile and end speed to aircraft weight and configuration.
- Broader planned aircraft envelope: NAVAIR describes support for platforms ranging from lightweight unmanned aircraft to heavy strike fighters.
- Different ship-integration options: An electromagnetic system can avoid much of the dedicated steam distribution equipment associated with a steam catapult.
- Potential maintenance and staffing reductions: NAVAIR and General Atomics make these claims, although the cited material does not supply independent comparative measurements.
- Electrical-system integration: A carrier designed around large-scale electrical generation and distribution can integrate the launch system into its broader electric architecture.
Where steam remains attractive
- Operational maturity: The Navy has used steam catapults for more than 50 years, according to NAVAIR’s overview.
- Known procedures and infrastructure: Fleets, shipyards, and training organizations have extensive experience with steam equipment.
- Established aircraft integration: Many current carrier aircraft and launch procedures were developed around steam-catapult installations.
- Different technical risk profile: Steam systems rely on familiar pressure, valve, cylinder, and mechanical technologies rather than high-power conversion and electromagnetic equipment.
None of these points makes one system universally superior. The appropriate choice depends on carrier design, electrical or steam-plant capacity, aircraft mix, required sortie rate, maintenance organization, program maturity, and the evidence available for the specific ship.
The 2026 policy development involving CVN 81
On August 14, 2026, the Associated Press reported that a presidential directive called for a plan to replace EMALS with steam catapults on USS Doris Miller (CVN 81). The report described schedule, integration, and cost risks and said work was already underway. This is a reported directive and planning development, not proof that the design change has been completed.
The report does not mean EMALS installed aboard USS Gerald R. Ford has been removed. It also does not establish that every future carrier will use steam catapults. Implementation would depend on formal Navy and Defense Department decisions, engineering changes, procurement actions, ship construction status, testing, and certification. Readers should verify the current CVN 81 program status before treating the reported plan as a completed configuration.

How to interpret claims about EMALS versus steam
Claims that are supported by the cited sources
- Both systems accelerate aircraft along a carrier deck for takeoff.
- EMALS uses stored kinetic energy, solid-state electrical power conversion, computer control, monitoring, automation, and an electromagnetic launch motor, according to NAVAIR.
- Steam catapults use steam supplied by the ship’s steam system.
- NAVAIR describes smoother acceleration, more accurate end-speed control, higher launch-energy capacity, and support for aircraft from lightweight unmanned systems to heavy strike fighters as EMALS capabilities or benefits.
- NAVAIR and General Atomics describe reductions in maintenance, footprint, and manpower as potential EMALS advantages.
- The 2022 sortie figures are whole-carrier class comparisons, and the 2022 milestone combines launches and recoveries.
Claims the cited material does not establish
- A universal numeric acceleration advantage for EMALS.
- A guaranteed percentage reduction in maintenance hours, crew size, footprint, or lifecycle cost.
- A fleet-wide EMALS failure rate or a statistically valid reliability advantage over steam.
- That every aircraft described as a future EMALS platform has already completed operational qualification.
- That the Ford class’s entire sortie-generation difference is caused by its catapults.
- That the reported CVN 81 policy directive has already replaced the ship’s planned or installed launch system.
Bottom line: which launch system is better?
EMALS is the more electronically controlled architecture. It replaces steam-driven launch machinery with stored kinetic energy, solid-state power conversion, and a linear electromagnetic motor, giving the Navy a system it says can provide smoother acceleration, tighter end-speed control, greater launch-energy flexibility, and possible reductions in maintenance, space, and staffing. Steam catapults are the established alternative, supplied by the ship’s steam system and supported by more than five decades of Navy experience.
The fairest comparison is not “electric versus steam” in the abstract. It is a comparison of two complete carrier systems under a specified aircraft mix, ship design, operating tempo, maintenance regime, and date. Publicly cited Navy figures show a higher sustained-sortie figure for the Ford class and a 10,000-event EMALS-and-arresting-gear milestone, but neither figure is an isolated catapult reliability or productivity test. For a particular carrier, aircraft, or future construction decision, the decisive evidence is the approved configuration and measured performance of that specific ship—not a headline number detached from the rest of the carrier.
