Tesla has shown a next-generation Roadster prototype performing a brief airborne stunt at a SpaceX testing facility in McGregor, Texas. Video and event reports describe the car driving up a curved or inverted ramp, leaving the surface, flipping in the air and landing on its wheels.
That is a dramatic technology demonstration, not proof that a production Tesla can operate as a sustained aircraft or that the configuration is approved for ordinary public roads. Tesla reportedly targets production in 2028, but has not announced a final retail price or published a complete specification sheet.
What Tesla demonstrated in Texas
The October 15–16, 2026 presentation centered on a Roadster prototype rather than a normal showroom launch. The vehicle approached a specially built curved or inverted ramp, became airborne for a short interval, rotated through a flip and returned to the ground on its wheels.

Elon Musk reacted afterward with “Well, it worked.” Tesla vice president of vehicle engineering Lars Moravy said, “Flying cars are real,” while Musk also told the crowd, “Turns out the future does have flying cars.” Those remarks describe the ambition of the demonstration, but they do not establish an aircraft certification, a production schedule guarantee or a customer-ready vehicle.

Can the flying Roadster actually fly?
In the narrow sense shown at the event, it can leave the ground and execute a controlled maneuver. The reported flight was short-duration hopping or stunt flight. Nothing in the available event coverage demonstrates sustained level flight, repeated takeoffs, hovering, navigation through public airspace or operation away from a prepared test environment.
How the propulsion concept is described
Reports describe SpaceX-inspired compressed-air or cold-gas thrusters as part of the Roadster concept. Such thrusters could provide brief bursts of force for a jump, rotation or attitude adjustment. The reports do not provide thrust ratings, propellant capacity, flight duration, redundancy data or a finished control-system specification.
Why the car can drive upside down in the demonstration
The prototype is also reported to use an underbody suction system intended to keep it attached to a surface during upside-down driving. That is a surface-adhesion idea, not free flight: suction can help maintain contact with a prepared ramp, but it does not make a vehicle an aircraft once it leaves the surface.

How fast is the new Roadster?
The headline performance figure is approximately 0.81 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. That number is an event or Tesla-related claim reported in 2026 coverage, not an independently verified benchmark. Acceleration figures can vary with launch control, battery state, tires, temperature, surface preparation and the measurement method, so the figure should not be treated as a certified specification until repeatable third-party testing is available.

When could buyers get one?
Tesla reportedly aimed for production in 2028. A target is not a delivery commitment, and the demonstration leaves several practical questions open: whether the flight hardware will be standard, optional or omitted; whether the production body and battery will match the prototype; and what testing and certification must occur before customer deliveries.
The event was held at a SpaceX testing facility, but that location does not itself grant permission to sell or operate the vehicle as an aircraft. Production timing, equipment and legal approval can all change before 2028.
How much does the flying Tesla cost?
NBC reported two reservation payments: $50,000 for a Performance reservation and $250,000 for a Thrust reservation. These amounts are reservation payments, not confirmed final vehicle prices. They do not establish the total purchase price, taxes, options, delivery charges, refund terms or whether the listed configurations will be offered in every market.

Is the flying Roadster street legal?
Available reports do not establish that the flying configuration is approved for ordinary public-road use. A road vehicle must satisfy applicable vehicle-safety, lighting, braking and emissions or energy rules, while an aircraft-like operation can involve separate aviation, airspace, pilot, insurance and local-use requirements. The Texas demonstration occurred at a controlled testing facility, which is materially different from driving or launching over public streets.
Until Tesla or regulators publish the relevant approvals, the prudent assumption is that the stunt configuration is a test vehicle for controlled demonstrations. Prospective owners should wait for jurisdiction-specific certification and operating rules rather than assume that a reservation permits flight.

- An official specification sheet identifying thruster hardware, suction-system limits and battery or propellant capacity.
- Independent acceleration and braking tests performed under stated conditions.
- A clear production configuration showing whether flight equipment is included in customer vehicles.
- Final pricing, reservation-conversion terms and delivery markets.
- Road and aviation approvals that define where, how and by whom the vehicle may operate.
Until those details appear, the Texas event is best understood as a successful proof-of-concept stunt: significant because a car-sized prototype demonstrated a controlled hop and flip, but not yet evidence of an affordable, road-legal flying car available to the public.
