Elon Musk’s estimated fortune dropped below $1 trillion on June 24, 2026, after SpaceX shares declined from their strong public-market debut. Forbes calculated a roughly $240 billion one-day reduction in his estimated net worth, but the threshold was temporary: Forbes reported him back above $1 trillion on June 29, and the Associated Press said on October 13 that Forbes had again placed him above that level the previous week.
What happened on June 24
Forbes reported that Musk lost trillionaire status on June 24, 2026, when the quoted value of SpaceX fell enough to pull his estimated fortune under $1 trillion. The calculation followed Forbes’ estimate of about $1.1 trillion on June 12, after SpaceX’s public debut.
Forbes attributed roughly $240 billion of the decline in estimated net worth to the SpaceX share-price move. That figure is a mark-to-market estimate: it applies a market price to securities Musk is believed to own. It does not show that he transferred $240 billion from a bank account or sold shares for that amount.
The estimate also included Tesla and other assets. SpaceX was the dominant driver because Musk’s ownership was concentrated there and the company had just begun trading at a publicly quoted price.

SpaceX’s debut created a volatile reference price
SpaceX’s June 2026 IPO price was $135 per share. On June 12, the Associated Press reported an opening price of about $150, an intraday high of roughly $168 and a close just under $161. Forbes’ $1.1 trillion estimate followed that debut strength.
The early price increase mattered because a large stake multiplied every change in the quoted share price. By August 4, Axios reported that SpaceX shares had fallen below the $135 IPO price, illustrating how quickly the market reference used in a billionaire estimate could reverse. The available coverage does not establish a single August closing price or a new Forbes net-worth figure for that date.

How much SpaceX Musk was estimated to own
In its June 24 calculation, Forbes said Musk held 4.8 billion SpaceX shares plus 350 million stock options, representing approximately a 38% stake. The share count and options were part of the assumptions behind the estimate.

Their value depends on factors such as the exercise price, the time remaining and the market price. Forbes’ published ownership calculation counted 350 million options, but the cited coverage does not provide their exercise terms or explain every adjustment used in the net-worth model. That is one reason different outlets can produce different totals for the same person on the same day.

Timeline of the trillion-dollar threshold
| Date and source | SpaceX market context | Musk estimate or status | What the report establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| June 12, 2026 — Forbes estimate reported by AP | About $150 open, roughly $168 intraday high and just under $161 close, according to AP | $1.1 trillion | Estimate after SpaceX’s public debut; Tesla and other assets were also part of the fortune calculation. |
| June 24, 2026 — Forbes | Share-price decline; exact price used in the cited report not stated | Below $1 trillion; estimated decline of about $240 billion | Forbes counted 4.8 billion shares and 350 million options, or about 38% of SpaceX. |
| June 29, 2026 — Forbes | Rebound; exact price and valuation not stated | Back above $1 trillion | The below-$1-trillion status was short-lived. |
| August 4, 2026 — Axios | Shares reported below the $135 IPO price | Not stated by Axios in the cited comparison | The post-IPO price path had moved below its initial offer level. |
| October 13, 2026 — Associated Press | Price and valuation used for the prior-week estimate not stated | Forbes had him above $1 trillion again in the previous week | This was a later update, not a claim that the June 24 drop was permanent. |
Was the loss real cash?
Nothing in the cited coverage establishes a realized cash loss. The June 24 event was an estimated paper or mark-to-market change, meaning the value assigned to Musk’s holdings moved with the market price. If he did not sell enough shares at the lower price, there was no corresponding $240 billion cash transaction.
That distinction matters for privately held or thinly traded assets as well as newly public companies. A quoted price can change the estimated value of a large holding even when the owner’s number of shares is unchanged. Converting the estimate into cash would require selling, and a sale of that scale could itself affect the market price, taxes and the final proceeds.

Is Elon Musk still a trillionaire?
The answer depends on the date and the estimator. He was below the threshold in Forbes’ June 24 calculation, above it again in Forbes’ June 29 update, and above it in the prior week according to the Forbes estimate described by the Associated Press on October 13. Those are dated estimates rather than a continuously verified cash balance.

For a current comparison, check the publication date, the SpaceX price or valuation being used, how options and restricted equity are treated, and whether Tesla and other holdings are included. A headline that omits those details can make a temporary market move sound like a permanent change in wealth.
Best Value
Why the estimate can change so quickly
Large concentrated ownership
A stake of approximately 38% means a relatively small percentage move in SpaceX can translate into a very large change in the gross value attributed to Musk’s holdings.
Newly public price discovery
The June debut produced a wide range between the $135 IPO price, the approximately $150 opening price, the roughly $168 intraday high and the just-under-$161 close. Early trading can therefore move an estimate sharply from one report to the next.
Different calculation assumptions
Net-worth lists must decide how to value options, restricted equity, private assets, debt and taxes. Two estimates can differ without either representing a bank statement, especially when one uses a quoted share price and another applies a different valuation date.

Musk’s June 24 move below $1 trillion was a dated valuation event driven mainly by SpaceX’s declining quoted shares. It was not evidence that he permanently lost trillionaire status or paid out $240 billion in cash. The subsequent Forbes rebound on June 29 and the Associated Press update in October show why billionaire rankings should always be read with their date, source and valuation method attached.
