Wych elm (Ulmus glabra) is one species of elm. For a practical comparison, this guide uses English elm (Ulmus procera) as the other species. Look at several features together: wych elm leaves are typically pointed, serrated and uneven at the base, while English elm is described as having fewer serrations. On a mature tree, also compare its crown and bark; a leaf alone is not a definitive test.

Which two trees are being compared?

“Elm” can refer broadly to trees in the elm group, so it does not identify one particular species. Here, “wych elm” means Ulmus glabra, and “English elm” means Ulmus procera, following the names used by Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew and the Woodland Trust. Common names and botanical classifications are not used uniformly, so a tree called simply “elm” should not automatically be assumed to be English elm.

How to compare the leaves

Wych elm

Kew describes wych elm leaves as roughly oval, about 12 cm long, with serrated edges, pointed tips and an uneven base where the leaf blade meets the stem. The approximate length is a description of the species, not a cutoff for identification: leaf size can vary, and the sources do not establish a measurement that separates it from English elm.

English elm

The Woodland Trust describes English elm as having fewer serrations than wych elm. Treat this as a relative clue, not a count-based rule: the source does not set a universal number of teeth that identifies either species.

What to look for in the field

  • Check whether the leaf has a pointed tip and an uneven base.
  • Notice the serrated edge, but compare its degree with other features rather than relying on a tooth count.
  • Consider the leaf’s shape and the texture of its upper surface. Forestry Commission recognition guidance treats these as useful features alongside crown form and bark.

Leaf shape and texture are helpful clues, but they do not make a leaf-only identification certain.

Check the whole tree, especially when it is mature

For mature trees, the Forestry Commission recommends giving attention to crown form and bark appearance as well as leaf features. Observe the overall crown and trunk rather than trying to identify the species from a single leaf. The available guidance does not provide a standalone crown-shape or bark checklist that guarantees separation, so use these observations in combination.

Account for bark and tree age

Wych elm bark changes as the tree grows: Kew describes young bark as smooth and grey, becoming brown and cracked with age. Smooth grey bark is therefore a feature of young wych elm, not a reliable expectation for a mature specimen. Kew notes that the species name glabra refers to the smooth bark of the young tree.

Why a combination of clues matters

Elm names and classifications can be complicated, and some elm ranks have been disputed in botanical treatments. Hybrids and variation can also make a simple two-feature comparison less conclusive. The Forestry Commission’s historical treatment discusses disputed ranks; the practical takeaway is to keep the species names explicit and weigh several observations together, including the tree’s age and the season in which you see it.

A practical identification checklist

  1. Establish the comparison. Decide whether you are comparing wych elm (Ulmus glabra) with English elm (Ulmus procera), rather than treating “elm” as a species name.
  2. Inspect the leaves. Look for the pointed tip, serrated edge and uneven base described for wych elm; regard fewer serrations as a clue toward English elm, not a definitive test.
  3. Look beyond the leaf. Assess upper-leaf texture, overall crown form and bark appearance, particularly on mature trees.
  4. Factor in age and context. A young wych elm can have smooth, grey bark; older bark becomes brown and cracked. Note the season and avoid forcing an identification if the traits do not agree.
