Eli Lilly and Company’s latest listed stock split was a 2-for-1 split in 1997. The board declared it on September 15, and it was payable to shareholders of record on September 24. Lilly’s published split history still lists September 24, 1997, as its latest split date; that history alone does not say whether another split is planned.
When did Eli Lilly split its stock?
Lilly’s board declared a 2-for-1 stock split on September 15, 1997, according to the company’s 1997 annual report. The split was payable to shareholders of record on September 24, 1997. Lilly’s stock-split history lists September 24 as the date of the latest split.
The declaration date and record date refer to different events: the board announced the split on September 15, while September 24 identifies the shareholders of record specified for the split and is the date in Lilly’s historical listing.

What did the 2-for-1 split mean?
A 2-for-1 split doubled the number of shares subject to the split. Lilly’s annual report says outstanding and weighted-average shares, along with per-share data, were adjusted for the split in all periods presented. It also specifies an exception: “Treasury shares held by the company were not split.”

Does the 1997 record mean Lilly will split again?
No. The company’s historical split record establishes what Lilly did, not whether it intends to do it again. The official materials cited here do not establish a new split announcement, a prediction, or management’s current reasoning about future splits. A date in the historical table should not be treated as evidence of a future decision.
