Neither process is universally better. Electrospinning uses an electric field to draw a polymer jet, while centrifugal spinning uses rotational force to eject and stretch the material. Centrifugal spinning is generally presented as the higher-efficiency route, whereas electrospinning is attractive when its fine-fiber morphology and controllable process meet the product specification. The right choice depends on the polymer, solvent or feed formulation, rheology, equipment, operating settings, acceptable defects and required output—not on the method name alone.

The short answer

Choose electrospinning when you need a demonstrated electric-field process that produces the required fiber morphology and properties, and when the throughput of your configuration is acceptable. Choose centrifugal spinning when production efficiency is important and your formulation can be ejected and drawn reliably under rotation without excessive beads or variability.

A 2022 comparative study of poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) found that centrifugal spinning could emulate electrospun fibers in spinnability, morphology and properties under the conditions studied. That is a material- and setup-specific result, not proof that every polymer or machine will behave the same way. Published reviews likewise describe centrifugal spinning as efficient, but they identify bead formation and consistency problems that must be checked on the actual apparatus.

How the two methods make fibers

Electrospinning: an electric field draws the jet

In electrospinning, a polymer solution, melt or other feed is delivered to an emitter. An applied electric field pulls the liquid into a charged jet. As the jet travels toward a collector, it is stretched and the solvent evaporates or the material cools, leaving solid fibers.

The electric field governs the initial jet motion, but it does not work in isolation. Formulation viscosity and rheology, conductivity, solvent behavior, feed rate, collector arrangement and other apparatus settings determine whether a stable jet forms and what structure it produces. A stable process can generate very fine fibers, but a conventional single-needle arrangement has limited output.

Centrifugal spinning: rotation supplies the drawing force

Centrifugal spinning places the polymer feed in a rotating device. Rotation creates a force that drives material through openings or from the spinning head toward a collector. The emerging streams are elongated as they travel, and fibers form as solvent leaves or the polymer solidifies.

Because material can be ejected from multiple locations while the device rotates, reviews characterize centrifugal spinning as a high-production-efficiency approach. The same moving air, rotation and machine dynamics can introduce disturbances. Air perturbation or device vibration can produce beads, and the frequency of those defects depends on the formulation and hardware.

Throughput: is centrifugal spinning faster?

In qualitative terms, centrifugal spinning is usually favored when production efficiency is the primary objective. A 2019 review gives a conventional single-needle electrospinning baseline of approximately 1–5 mL/h by feed rate, or 0.1–1.0 g/h by fiber mass. Those figures describe that electrospinning configuration and should not be treated as a universal rate for every electrospinner.

No directly comparable, universally valid centrifugal-spinning rate or multiplier is established by the cited sources. A centrifugal device may produce more material per unit time than a single needle, but the actual result depends on the number and geometry of outlets, rotational conditions, feed properties, collection design and the defect rate that can be tolerated.

Question Electrospinning Centrifugal spinning
Driving force Electric field acting on a polymer jet Rotational force acting on ejected polymer streams
Published throughput description Conventional single-needle setups are described as low throughput; one 2019 review reports 1–5 mL/h or 0.1–1.0 g/h for that baseline Reviews describe high production efficiency, without a universal rate applicable to all equipment
Main scale-up question How to increase output while preserving jet stability and fiber uniformity How to increase output while controlling beads, vibration effects and collection consistency

Compare usable output rather than gross feed rate. A run that produces more liquid but requires extensive removal of beads or nonfibrous deposits may not deliver more acceptable fiber per hour.

Which method makes finer fibers?

There is no universal diameter winner. Electrospinning is well known for producing fine-fiber morphologies, but the attainable diameter and distribution depend on polymer concentration, solvent or feed formulation, rheology, electric-field conditions, feed rate, collector geometry and environmental conditions. Centrifugal spinning can also produce fine fibers, and the 2022 PEO comparison reported similar morphology and properties under its tested conditions.

Ask a narrower question: which process produces the required diameter distribution and morphology with the intended material? Measure mean diameter, spread, shape, surface texture, pore structure where relevant, and bead frequency. A nominally smaller average diameter is not automatically better if the distribution is broad or the mat is mechanically weak.

Material and formulation fit

Rheology and spinnability

Both processes require a feed that can form a continuous, stretchable filament under the chosen conditions. Polymer molecular characteristics, concentration, solvent selection and rheology influence whether the stream remains continuous or breaks into droplets and beads. A formulation that works in an electrospinner cannot be assumed to work unchanged in a centrifugal device, and vice versa.

Document the formulation and operating window that produced a stable run. Small changes in solvent composition, concentration, temperature or feed behavior can alter spinnability and final morphology. Treat formulation development as part of the process choice, not as a later optimization step.

Solvent and solidification behavior

The material must solidify at the right point in the flight path. If solvent removal is too slow, fibers can remain wet or fuse on the collector; if the stream destabilizes before solidification, defects can increase. The suitable balance is specific to the polymer and apparatus, so establish it experimentally rather than transferring settings from another study.

Equipment compatibility

Electrospinning requires a controlled high-voltage electric-field setup and safe operation by trained personnel. Centrifugal spinning requires a rotating assembly, reliable containment and control of vibration and moving air. Select the equipment that your laboratory can operate, clean, maintain and monitor safely while meeting the required collection geometry.

A decision framework for choosing the process

Decision axis Favor electrospinning when… Favor centrifugal spinning when…
Driving mechanism and equipment An electric-field process is appropriate and the laboratory can operate the equipment safely. A rotational-force process suits the formulation and suitable rotating equipment is available.
Output objective The achievable morphology and properties meet the specification even if a conventional single-needle setup has limited throughput. Production efficiency is a priority and the process can control beads and collect fibers consistently.
Material and process fit The specific solution or feed has demonstrated stable spinnability in the intended configuration. The formulation can be ejected and drawn reliably under centrifugal conditions without unacceptable defects.
Product verification Bench trials establish the required fiber distribution and mat properties. Bench trials establish acceptable morphology, repeatability and output.

These are selection axes, not guaranteed advantages. Published comparisons are strongly dependent on material, formulation, apparatus and operating conditions.

  1. Define the acceptance criteria. Set target diameter range, allowable diameter variation, maximum bead frequency, mat thickness or basis weight, mechanical and thermal requirements, and minimum usable output.
  2. Fix the material system. Use the same polymer grade and, where scientifically appropriate, equivalent solids content. Record solvent composition and any additives because they affect rheology and solidification.
  3. Characterize the feed. Measure or otherwise document viscosity or rheology, concentration and stability. A process comparison is not meaningful if one method receives a poorly spinnable feed.
  4. Establish a stable operating window for each method. Adjust the relevant apparatus settings until each process produces a continuous fiber-forming stream. Record settings and reject runs with obvious interruptions.
  5. Collect comparable samples. Keep collection time, target basis weight or mass, collector conditions and post-processing consistent. Label samples by method and run rather than relying on a single specimen.
  6. Quantify morphology. Measure diameter distribution, fiber shape, bead frequency and any fused or nonfibrous regions. Report the number of fields or fibers examined and the spread, not only an average.
  7. Test functional properties. Compare mechanical, thermal, barrier, filtration or other application-specific properties under the same test conditions.
  8. Calculate usable productivity. Record feed rate, recovered fiber mass, run duration and rejected material. Report productivity together with defect rate and repeatability.
  9. Repeat across runs. A method that succeeds once but varies substantially between runs may be unsuitable for manufacturing, even if its best sample looks attractive.

Defects and troubleshooting

Beads or broken fibers in centrifugal spinning

Air perturbation and device vibration are specifically identified as causes of beaded fibers in centrifugal spinning reviews. Check whether the defect pattern changes with rotational conditions, device balance, mounting, collection distance or feed properties. Stabilize the apparatus and formulation before increasing output. Quantify bead frequency rather than describing a sample as simply “good” or “bad.”

Unstable or intermittent electrospinning jets

An intermittent jet can result when the formulation or operating window does not support continuous drawing. Recheck feed behavior, rheology, solvent evaporation and the apparatus settings that control the electric-field process. Do not compare a marginal electrospinning run with a fully optimized centrifugal run; first establish a reproducible baseline for both.

Wide diameter distributions

A broad distribution often indicates that the process is sensitive to formulation or operating conditions. Repeat measurements across several locations on the collected mat. If the spread changes during a run, examine feed stability, collection uniformity and environmental changes. Choose the method that keeps the distribution inside the specification, not the one with the lowest isolated diameter.

Low recovered mass

Low recovery can reflect limited feed delivery, deposition outside the collector, incomplete solidification or material lost during handling. Track where the material goes. For centrifugal systems, inspect the chamber and collector for deposits caused by disturbed streams; for electrospinning, check whether the single-needle configuration limits feed delivery or whether material is missing the collector.

Scale-up and production planning

Scale-up is a design problem, not a label attached to a process. Electrospinning literature discusses multi-emitter and other scale-up approaches, while alternative methods such as centrifugal spinning are also studied for higher production efficiency. In either case, changing the apparatus can change the electric-field distribution or rotational airflow, jet behavior, collection pattern and defect rate.

Do not infer cost per mass, commercial readiness or labor requirements from the method name. Establish a mass balance, cleaning procedure, maintenance schedule, quality-control sampling plan and safe operating procedure for the actual machine. Include the time required to remove beads, trim deposits, dry material and verify properties; these activities determine useful manufacturing capacity.

Application-specific considerations

Filtration

Filtration performance depends on fiber diameter distribution, mat thickness, pore structure, pressure drop and mechanical integrity. A process with higher nominal output is not preferable if beads or nonuniform deposition create leakage paths or excessive pressure drop. Test complete mats under the intended flow conditions.

Biomedical materials

Biomedical applications can impose strict requirements on morphology, mechanical behavior, thermal history, residual solvent and batch-to-batch consistency. Select the process that can repeatedly meet those requirements with a documented formulation and controlled collection procedure. Broad statements that one method is better for biomedical use are not justified without a specific material and device context.

Energy-storage components

For separators, electrodes or related structures, compare thickness uniformity, porosity, thermal behavior, mechanical strength and compatibility with the rest of the cell or device. Fiber fineness alone does not establish suitability.

Environmental materials

Environmental uses may prioritize scalable output, chemical stability, wet-state behavior and resistance to fouling or degradation. Evaluate the complete performance envelope and the practical rate of acceptable material, rather than selecting solely on the basis of a high feed rate.

What the PEO comparison shows—and does not show

The 2022 ACS study focused on poly(ethylene oxide) and examined formulation and solvent effects, spinnability, morphology and fiber properties using centrifugal and electrospinning data. Under the studied conditions, centrifugal fibers could emulate electrospun fibers in those measures. This is useful evidence that the rotational route can reproduce a fine-fiber result for a particular polymer system.

It does not establish equivalence for every polymer, solvent, concentration, machine design or target property. Use the study as a reason to test both methods when PEO or a similar formulation is involved, not as a substitute for your own process window and quality data.

Questions to answer before buying or building equipment

  • What fiber diameter range and allowable distribution does the product require?
  • What bead frequency, mat uniformity and mechanical or thermal limits are acceptable?
  • Is the priority fine morphology, maximum usable mass per hour, or a balance of both?
  • Can the formulation be supplied continuously and remain stable during the full run?
  • What collection geometry gives uniform coverage at the intended production width?
  • How will vibration, airflow, solvent handling and operator exposure be controlled?
  • What measurements will release a batch, and how many independent runs establish repeatability?
  • What fraction of produced material is usable after defect removal and drying?

Bottom line

Electrospinning is the prudent choice when a controlled electric-field process already meets your required fiber morphology and properties, even if a conventional single-needle setup limits throughput. Centrifugal spinning is the stronger candidate when higher production efficiency matters and trials show that your formulation, rotating equipment and collection system suppress beads and maintain consistency. Because both outcomes are formulation- and apparatus-dependent, the defensible choice comes from side-by-side trials against the actual specification—not from assuming that either method is categorically superior.
