Yes—but only in a very specific laboratory experiment. A 2025 Science study reported that electron irradiation converted submicrocrystals of adamantane into cubic nanodiamonds. The experiment used an electron beam in vacuum, 80–200 kiloelectronvolts (keV), and temperatures from 100 to 296 kelvin (K). It produced hydrogen gas and nanodiamonds after irradiation lasting tens of seconds. That result does not show that hydrocarbon crystals in general can be turned into diamond, nor does it establish a commercial manufacturing process.
What the experiment actually demonstrated
Jiarui Fu, Takayuki Nakamuro and Eiichi Nakamura reported the work in Science in 2025 as “Rapid, low-temperature nanodiamond formation by electron-beam activation of adamantane C–H bonds” (389, issue 6764, pages 1024–1030; DOI 10.1126/science.adw2025). The precursor was adamantane, a hydrocarbon with a rigid cage-like molecular structure, prepared as submicrocrystals. Researchers placed those crystals in a vacuum electron-microscopy environment and irradiated them with electrons between 80 and 200 keV while controlling the sample between 100 and 296 K.
Under those conditions, the team observed the emergence of cubic nanodiamonds and the evolution of hydrogen gas. The central claim is therefore narrow: electron-beam activation can drive a solid-state transformation of adamantane into nanodiamond. The abstract also reports that other hydrocarbons tested by the authors did not form nanodiamonds. “Hydrocarbon crystals” is consequently too broad if it is read as a general rule.

How adamantane becomes a nanodiamond
Electron irradiation starts a chemical, not merely a destructive, process
High-energy electrons are often associated with radiation damage: they can break chemical bonds, displace atoms or decompose organic material. In this experiment, the beam instead initiated a defined sequence of reactions in a suitably structured molecule. Senior researcher Eiichi Nakamura described the significance as evidence that electrons can let organic molecules undergo well-defined chemical reactions when the molecules have appropriate properties.

The beam does not simply squeeze adamantane into diamond. The reported mechanism involves bond cleavage, rearrangement and carbon–carbon network formation. Hydrogen leaves as molecular hydrogen, while the remaining carbon atoms reorganize into the diamond lattice.
Oligomers appear before diamond particles
Time-resolved transmission electron microscopy (TEM) allowed the researchers to watch the transformation as it happened. Adamantane molecules first formed oligomeric material—larger structures made from linked precursor molecules. Those intermediates then transformed into roughly spherical nanodiamonds. This observed sequence is important because it links the starting crystal to the final particles instead of treating the product as an unexplained radiation deposit.
C–H bond cleavage is the rate-determining step
The authors used a sizable kinetic isotope effect to identify cleavage of carbon–hydrogen (C–H) bonds as the rate-determining step. In an isotope experiment, replacing hydrogen with a heavier isotope changes the reaction rate when breaking the C–H bond is kinetically important. That result supports a mechanism in which removing hydrogen from adamantane controls how quickly the carbon framework can progress toward diamond.
The finding also explains why hydrogen gas is detected. Dehydrogenation supplies the hydrogen-containing by-product while carbon atoms become available for the new sp3-bonded network characteristic of cubic diamond.

Conditions, particle sizes and what those numbers mean
The key operating figures come from different accounts of the same research and should not be merged into one guaranteed specification.
| Reported figure | Source and context | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 80–200 keV electrons | Fu, Nakamuro and Nakamura, Science (2025) | Beam-energy range used in the reported experiment |
| 100–296 K | Fu, Nakamuro and Nakamura, Science (2025) | Temperature range for the irradiated sample |
| Tens of seconds | Fu, Nakamuro and Nakamura, Science (2025) | Approximate irradiation duration stated in the abstract |
| 2–4 nm particles | Chemistry World (2025), reporting the study | Secondary-reporting size range under the described conditions |
| Up to 10 nm | University of Tokyo institutional release (2025) | Larger particles reported after prolonged irradiation; not the same condition as the 2–4 nm account |
A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. Particles in the 2–4 nm range are only a few dozen carbon atoms across in each dimension, while a particle approaching 10 nm is substantially larger but still nanoscale. The two size statements are not necessarily contradictory: they refer to different irradiation durations and come from different publications. Neither figure is a guaranteed size specification for every adamantane crystal, beam setting or microscope.
The sources do not provide a production yield, a complete particle-size distribution, a demonstrated throughput, or a cost per gram. Without those measurements, the reported sizes describe an observation, not a manufacturing target.
Why adamantane matters—and why the result does not generalize automatically
Adamantane is the demonstrated precursor, not merely an example chosen for convenience. Its molecular architecture and crystal form evidently provide the “suitable properties” needed for the electron-triggered sequence. The study’s negative result for other tested hydrocarbons is equally important: chemical composition alone does not determine whether a crystal will follow the same pathway.

Several factors could control whether a precursor works, including how C–H bonds are arranged, how molecules pack in the crystal, how readily intermediate oligomers form and whether the carbon framework can reorganize into cubic diamond. The available report establishes that these requirements are selective, but it does not identify a universal design rule or list every failed compound. It would therefore be inaccurate to advertise the method as a way to convert arbitrary plastic, petroleum-derived crystals or any hydrocarbon powder into diamond.
How this method compares with established diamond synthesis
Conventional diamond manufacturing generally relies on either extreme pressure and temperature routes or chemical-vapor deposition (CVD). The electron-beam experiment operates in a very different regime: low sample temperatures, a vacuum and a precisely controlled electron beam. That contrast is scientifically significant, but it does not by itself prove that the new method is cheaper, simpler or easier to scale.
| Comparison axis | Electron-irradiated adamantane | Conventional routes |
|---|---|---|
| Precursor | Adamantane submicrocrystals | Depends on the process; the cited sources describe pressure-based synthesis or CVD in general terms |
| Energy environment | 80–200 keV electron beam | Extreme pressure and temperature in pressure-based synthesis, or a reactive gas/plasma environment in CVD |
| Sample temperature in the cited study | 100–296 K | Not stated in the supplied sources for a directly comparable process |
| Atmosphere | Vacuum | Process-dependent |
| Observed product | Cubic nanodiamonds, approximately 2–4 nm in a Chemistry World account and up to 10 nm after prolonged irradiation in a University of Tokyo release | Product size and form vary by established method; no directly comparable value is supplied here |
| Yield and economics | Not reported in the cited sources | No quantitative comparison is established by these sources |
| Scale demonstrated | Laboratory electron-microscopy experiment | Industrial methods have established production pathways, but their detailed comparison is outside the reported experiment |
The fair conclusion is that electron irradiation offers a new reaction concept, not that it has already displaced high-pressure synthesis or CVD. A meaningful industrial comparison would require mass yield, energy consumption, beam-current and area data, precursor recovery, particle purification, equipment utilization and continuous-operation studies. None of those are established by the cited reports.

Electron microscopes and high-voltage beam systems present serious radiation, electrical, vacuum and cryogenic hazards. Hydrogen evolution adds a flammable gas concern inside the instrument’s controlled environment. These are reasons the result belongs in a properly equipped research facility, not a home workshop or an improvised irradiation setup.
What buying adamantane can—and cannot—do
Adamantane is the only direct physical precursor supported by this experiment. Purchasing laboratory-grade adamantane does not reproduce the result by itself. The published setup depends on crystal preparation, beam energy, vacuum, temperature, dose and real-time characterization. The cited sources do not establish a retail grade, regional availability requirement, or a preparation protocol suitable for routine consumer use.
Likewise, an ordinary scanning electron microscope is not automatically equivalent to the reported system. The experiment used transmission electron microscopy for observation and an electron-beam environment capable of controlled irradiation. Instrument geometry, beam current, dose and sample mounting can all affect what happens to a molecular crystal.
Potential applications—and the limits of the evidence
The University of Tokyo release discusses possible future uses in electron lithography and nanodiamond arrays. In principle, a beam-addressable reaction could be useful where nanoscale diamond structures must be formed at selected locations. The ability to watch the transformation in a microscope also makes the method valuable as a tool for studying radiation-driven organic chemistry.

Those possibilities remain prospective. The reported work does not demonstrate a patterned commercial device, a repeatable array-production workflow, long-term product stability, or performance in a finished sensor, coating or electronic component. Nanodiamond size, surface chemistry, defect content and attachment to a substrate would all matter in an application, and the cited sources do not supply a complete specification for those properties.
Questions the 2025 result leaves open
Can the process be scaled?
An electron beam can be moved or shaped, and an expert quoted by Chemistry World described the method as potentially scalable because adamantane is accessible and electron irradiation can in principle be scaled. That is an expert assessment, not a demonstrated production result. The reported experiment does not establish throughput, beam-area economics or continuous processing.
What is the yield?
No numerical conversion yield is supplied in the cited material. It is therefore impossible to calculate how much adamantane becomes nanodiamond, how much remains as oligomeric material or how much is lost through other decomposition pathways.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Can larger particles be made reliably?
The University of Tokyo reports particles up to 10 nm under prolonged irradiation, while Chemistry World reports 2–4 nm under the conditions it describes. A systematic relationship between dose, time and particle diameter has not been established by those summaries. Larger size should be treated as an observed possibility, not a controlled growth specification.
Will other molecules work?
The abstract says other tested hydrocarbons failed to form nanodiamonds. More precursors may eventually be found, but the present evidence does not support a general hydrocarbon-conversion rule.
Is it cheaper than conventional diamond synthesis?
There is no supported cost comparison. Specialized high-voltage microscopy, vacuum equipment, temperature control and post-processing could be substantial expenses, while no mass-production yield or energy balance has been reported.
How to evaluate claims about this technique
- Check whether the claim names adamantane rather than “any hydrocarbon.”
- Look for the operating window: 80–200 keV electrons, vacuum and 100–296 K.
- Distinguish a 2–4 nm report from the separate “up to 10 nm” statement after prolonged irradiation.
- Ask for a measured yield, dose, beam current, sample mass and repeatability data before accepting a scale-up claim.
- Confirm that “diamond” means structurally verified cubic nanodiamond, not simply carbon-rich or graphitic debris.
- Treat proposed lithography or array applications as future possibilities unless a working device and process metrics are shown.
The significance in one sentence
Electron irradiation has been shown to trigger a rapid, low-temperature conversion of adamantane submicrocrystals into cubic nanodiamonds in a specialized vacuum electron-microscopy experiment; it is a compelling precursor-specific discovery, not proof that hydrocarbon crystals generally or economically become diamond.
