Verdict: The Electrolux EP53-47SWA is an air purifier, not a vacuum cleaner. Electrolux Australia rates it for rooms up to 54 m² with a claimed clean-air delivery rate (CADR) of 419 m³/h. It adds four-stage filtration, PM1/PM2.5/PM10 and TVOC sensing, Wi‑Fi/app control and a child lock. Those are manufacturer specifications and claims; the publicly visible CHOICE listing does not reveal its expert score or independent dust, smoke, VOC, noise or efficiency results. It is therefore a plausible smart purifier for a medium-to-large room, but not a product for which a public independent test verdict can be confirmed.
First, identify the product correctly
The model number in this review, EP53-47SWA, resolves to Electrolux’s UltimateHome 500 Air Purifier. It is not a stick, canister or robot vacuum. The “Ultimate Home 500” wording in some listings can create that category confusion, so check the model number before buying filters or comparing it with floor-care products.
Electrolux Australia lists a shell-white finish and a two-year warranty. The specifications and filtration figures below describe the Australian model information; availability, support terms and prices can differ by country.

How the four-stage purifier is intended to work
1. Pre-filter
The first stage catches larger dust, hair and other debris before air reaches the finer media. Keeping this surface reasonably clear is important because a loaded pre-filter restricts airflow and makes the remaining stages work harder. Electrolux’s published specification names the stage but does not provide a cleaning interval, so use the maintenance instructions supplied with your unit rather than assuming a calendar schedule.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
2. Antibacterial coating
Electrolux describes an antibacterial coating as the second stage. Its Australia page says the combined system removes “up to 99.9% of captured harmful bacteria.” That is a qualified claim: it refers to captured bacteria, not every bacterium in a room. Electrolux attributes the figure to third-party testing of named organisms to an AHAM standard in 2022. It should not be read as a medical, sterilisation or infection-prevention guarantee.
3. HEPA 13 filter
The HEPA 13 media provides the fine-particle stage. Electrolux says the purifier filters particles as small as 0.3 microns and identifies the replacement component as a HEPA13 Clean Filter. Particle size alone does not tell you the purifier’s delivered room performance: airflow, filter loading, fan speed and room layout also matter. The public product information does not establish an independently measured removal rate for this model.
4. Carbon filter
The activated-carbon stage is intended to assist with odours and some gaseous pollutants. Electrolux states that it can remove “up to 94% of harmful gases such as TVOCs,” based on testing against nine gases. No test year is given for that gas figure. The claim applies to the tested conditions and gases; it is not evidence that every household odour or chemical will be removed to the same extent.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVirus wording needs the same care
Electrolux also reports “up to 99.99% of H1N1 virus,” citing third-party testing to JEM and GB standards in 2022. The wording is about the test result for captured virus under those methods. It does not establish that the purifier prevents transmission, treats illness or makes a room pathogen-free.
Room size and airflow: what 54 m² really tells you
The 54 m² figure is Electrolux’s claimed coverage, paired with a claimed CADR of 419 m³/h. CADR is an airflow-related measure of how quickly clean air is delivered; it is more useful than a room-size label by itself, but the published material does not state the air-change assumptions behind the 54 m² number. Ceiling height, open doorways, leakage, pollution level and the selected fan speed all change real-world performance.
For a single enclosed room, placing the purifier where its intake and outlet are not blocked gives the fan the best chance of approaching the rated airflow. An open-plan area, high ceiling or connected hallway effectively increases the air volume, so the 54 m² label should not be treated as a guarantee for an entire floor. If you need rapid smoke or cooking-odour removal, expect to use a higher fan speed; the 20 dB figure is specifically the lowest listed noise, not a promise of silent operation at speed five.
CHOICE’s public model listing repeats the 54 m² and 419 m³/h figures but does not publish the underlying independent performance results. Consequently, there is no public evidence here to say whether the EP53-47SWA outperforms another purifier on dust, smoke or VOC removal.

Controls, sensing and smart-home trade-offs
On-device operation
Five fan speeds give you a choice between lower noise and faster air turnover. The child lock is useful in a room where buttons may be pressed accidentally. Electrolux does not list a handheld remote, so plan to use the purifier’s controls or the app rather than expecting an infrared controller.
What the sensors measure
The purifier monitors PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and TVOC through dedicated particle and TVOC sensors. These readings can help you see changes after cooking, cleaning or opening a window, but a consumer sensor is not a laboratory instrument. A displayed TVOC value does not identify a specific chemical, and a low particle reading does not prove that all pollutants have been removed.
Wi‑Fi and app control
Wi‑Fi and app control allow remote operation and monitoring when the purifier is connected to your home network. The supplied product information does not specify the exact app name, supported wireless bands or account process, so follow the current Electrolux setup instructions for your market. If connectivity is a deciding factor, confirm that the current app supports your phone and network before purchase; the purifier remains usable from its local controls when the network is unavailable.
Noise, placement and daily use
Electrolux lists a lowest noise level of 20 dB, which describes the quietest stated operating condition. No readings for the other four fan speeds are published in the material available for this model. In practice, the setting that clears a smoky or dusty room fastest is unlikely to be the quietest one, so think of the five-speed range as a compromise between acoustic comfort and cleaning rate rather than a single noise promise.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →The listed dimensions are 56 × 28 × 29 cm and weight is 5.7 kg. Those figures are manageable for moving between rooms, but the 56 cm height still needs clearance from shelves, curtains and furniture. Keep the intake and outlet open on all sides required by the manual, avoid placing the sensor next to a direct cooking plume, and do not run the unit inside a cupboard. A central position in the occupied room generally gives the sensors a more representative sample than a corner blocked by boxes.
No energy-use figure is listed publicly for the EP53-47SWA. That means an electricity-cost comparison cannot be calculated reliably from the available specifications. If the purifier will run continuously, check the electrical rating and any energy information on the product label or current manual, then calculate cost using your local tariff rather than assuming another model’s wattage.
Understanding Electrolux’s test claims
The headline percentages have several boundaries that matter. “Up to 99.9% of captured harmful bacteria” is attributed to third-party testing of named organisms under an AHAM standard in 2022. “Up to 99.99% of H1N1 virus” is attributed to third-party testing under JEM and GB standards in 2022. The carbon statement—up to 94% of harmful gases such as TVOCs—comes from testing against nine gases, with no year stated on the product page. Electrolux also cites particle-media testing to NIOS TEB-APR-STP-0059 (2019) at SGS.

- Flawless 4K@60Hz Video with HDMI: Delivers exceptional clarity and smoothness with its 4K@60Hz HDMI port, making it ideal for high-definition presentations and entertainment. (Note: Only the HDMI port supports video projection; the USB-C port is for data transfer only.)

These are test-specific results, not guarantees for every room, pollutant concentration or operating speed. “Captured” is particularly important: material that reaches and is retained by the filter is different from total room removal, and real results depend on airflow, leakage and filter condition. The claims do not mean the purifier sterilises a room, diagnoses air quality or replaces ventilation and source control. Use extraction while cooking, keep paint and cleaning chemicals sealed, and address mould or smoke at the source.

Filter replacement: EFFCLN4 is the supported match
Electrolux’s filter guide names EFFCLN4 as the replacement Clean Filter for EP53-47SWA and describes it as a replacement HEPA13 clean filter. Search for the exact phrase “Electrolux EFFCLN4 replacement filter” and verify that the listing explicitly names EP53-47SWA before ordering. Filter packaging and retailer stock can change, so model compatibility is more reliable than a similar-looking photograph.
CHOICE’s public listing shows A$109 for a replacement filter and an annual cost of A$109. Treat both figures as dated listing information rather than a current quote: taxes, delivery, retailer pricing and supply can change, and the listing does not establish that every owner replaces the filter exactly once per year.
Electrolux’s spare-parts listing also identifies part 4055943155 as compatible with EP53-47SWA, but that listing was shown as out of stock. It should not be presented as a readily available alternative to EFFCLN4, and the available material does not establish whether it is the same consumer replacement filter. Confirm the part description and stock status directly with the seller.
A safe replacement routine
- Switch the purifier off and disconnect it from power.
- Open the filter compartment using the release method shown in the EP53-47SWA manual; do not force the housing or operate the unit with the compartment open.
- Remove the used filter and note its orientation before installing the new one.
- Install the EFFCLN4 replacement in the same orientation, ensuring the compartment closes fully.
- Reconnect power and follow the manual or app instructions for any filter-life reset. The exact reset sequence is not specified in the published material, so avoid relying on a reset procedure from a different Electrolux model.
Do not wash or vacuum the HEPA13/carbon cartridge unless Electrolux explicitly allows that for this model. A washable pre-filter, if described in your manual, is a different component from the main clean filter.
Ownership cost and value
CHOICE’s public listing recorded a purchase price of A$499 and a replacement-filter cost of A$109, with annual filter cost also shown as A$109. These numbers provide a useful budgeting baseline, not a current transaction quote. A retailer may add delivery or charge a different amount, and the actual replacement interval depends on pollution load, fan use and the purifier’s filter-life guidance. Before buying, price at least one genuine EFFCLN4 filter and include that recurring cost in your comparison with competing models.
The two-year warranty is a positive part of the ownership proposition, but warranty coverage and service arrangements can vary by country and seller. Keep proof of purchase and check the local warranty terms. A lower-priced purifier with cheaper, consistently available filters may cost less over several years; conversely, a model with app control and broader sensing may justify a higher total cost for buyers who will use those features.

What the independent public evidence does—and does not—show
CHOICE has an exact-model listing for the EP53-47SWA. The publicly visible details are a listed price of A$499, two-year warranty, 54 m² claimed room size, 419 m³/h claimed CADR, 5.7 kg weight, 56 × 28 × 29 cm dimensions, A$109 replacement-filter cost and A$109 annual filter cost.
CHOICE keeps its expert score and detailed dust, smoke, VOC, noise, usability and efficiency findings behind membership. The public listing therefore cannot support a CHOICE rating, comparative ranking or a claim that the purifier achieved a particular independent test result. No hands-on testing or named-person quotation is available in the published material considered here.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteThis distinction matters. Manufacturer specifications explain what Electrolux designed and claims; independent tests would show how a sample performed under defined conditions. Until the member-only results are available, judge the EP53-47SWA on its published features, claimed airflow, dimensions, warranty and ongoing filter cost rather than an assumed score.
How to compare it with another purifier
Use the same questions for every candidate instead of comparing marketing labels. First, look for independently measured clean-air performance for dust, smoke and VOCs, not only a claimed room area. Next, compare airflow or CADR using the same test convention, and check whether the quoted room size assumes a particular ceiling height or air-change rate. Noise should be compared at equivalent fan settings; a single minimum figure is not enough.
Then check the complete ownership picture: replacement-filter price, expected interval, local stock, warranty length, dimensions, weight, controls and energy use. Confirm whether a purifier has the sensors you actually need. The EP53-47SWA lists PM1, PM2.5, PM10 and TVOC sensing, but no humidity or temperature sensor, ioniser or remote. Do not fill missing comparison data with estimates; if a competing product’s independent results or filter interval are unavailable, mark the comparison as unresolved.
Who should consider the EP53-47SWA?
- Medium-to-large single rooms: The 54 m² claim and 419 m³/h claimed CADR make it a candidate for a living room, bedroom or office within that stated size, provided doors and airflow paths are sensible.
- Owners who want app access: Wi‑Fi control and pollutant readings are useful when you want to check or adjust the purifier away from the unit.
- Homes concerned about particles and odours: The combination of HEPA13 media, carbon and PM/TVOC sensing addresses both particle filtration and odour-related use cases, subject to the qualifications on Electrolux’s test claims.
- Households needing a child lock: The lock is listed as a built-in feature.
Who may want a different approach?
- Buyers requiring independently published performance: The public CHOICE page does not expose the model’s score or test data, so a transparent independent comparison cannot be made from the available evidence.
- People expecting a remote control: Electrolux lists no remote.
- Users seeking humidity or temperature data: Neither a humidity sensor nor a temperature sensor is listed.
- Anyone budgeting only the purchase price: The A$109 dated filter figure means consumables should be included in the ownership budget.
- Open-plan or unusually tall spaces: The 54 m² claim may not represent the effective air volume of a connected or high-ceiling area.
Buying and setup checklist
- Confirm the model: Check that the label says EP53-47SWA and that you are buying an air purifier, not a similarly named vacuum product.
- Measure the target room: Compare the enclosed room’s floor area and layout with the 54 m² manufacturer claim, allowing for open doors and high ceilings.
- Price the filter: Check current EFFCLN4 availability and total delivered cost. The A$109 CHOICE figure is historical listing information, not a guaranteed current price.
- Check connectivity: Confirm current Electrolux app compatibility and your home-network requirements if Wi‑Fi control is important.
- Choose placement: Leave the intake and outlet unobstructed and keep the unit where its sensors sample the room air rather than a sealed cupboard or tight corner.
- Start with the appropriate speed: Use a lower setting when quiet operation matters and a higher setting when you need faster turnover; the 20 dB specification applies to the lowest listed noise condition.
- Monitor the readings: Use PM and TVOC trends as indicators, not as a substitute for professional air-quality testing.
- Plan maintenance: Inspect the pre-filter and replace the clean filter according to the manual and the unit’s filter-life indication, using the exact EFFCLN4 match.
Bottom line
The Electrolux UltimateHome 500 EP53-47SWA is best understood as a connected, four-stage air purifier with a manufacturer-claimed 54 m² coverage, 419 m³/h CADR, five fan speeds and particle/TVOC monitoring. Its strongest practical advantages are the HEPA13-plus-carbon design, app control and child lock. Its main uncertainties are the lack of publicly visible independent CHOICE results and the ongoing cost and availability of the EFFCLN4 filter. Buy it when those features fit your room and budget, but do not treat Electrolux’s qualified bacteria, virus or gas figures as medical guarantees or as a substitute for independent comparative testing.
