Can I run electricity to my shed? Yes—but the safe, compliant setup depends on what you plan to power, how far the shed is from the home’s electrical panel, the wiring route and method, and the electrical rules adopted where you live. Check local permit and inspection requirements before buying materials or digging; there is no universal wire size or burial depth that fits every shed.

What determines the right setup?

Start with the intended use, not a cable size found in a generic example. A shed with lights and occasional light-duty use has different needs from a workshop running motors, heaters, or several tools at once. List the equipment you expect to use, including likely future additions, and note its electrical requirements. The planned load informs circuit and conductor design; the distance from the home’s panel is also important because a long run may need a voltage-drop check. A practical guide to planning a feeder emphasizes calculating the load before sizing it: feeder load calculations and sizing.

Also map the route and identify whether wiring would be underground, exposed, or protected in a raceway. Those choices affect the materials and installation requirements. If you expect to add larger equipment later, include it in the plan before trenching rather than assuming a small initial setup can be expanded without changes.

How do underground wiring methods differ?

Underground direct-burial cable and conductors installed in conduit are different wiring methods, and required cover can vary with the method, circuit conditions, and locally adopted rules. Conduit can provide physical protection and a route for conductors; direct-burial cable is intended for underground use when installed as permitted. Neither description, by itself, establishes what is allowed or required for your property.

For a location-specific illustration, the City of Saint Paul Safety & Inspections’ 2023-revised garage checklist lists minimum cover depths of 6 inches for rigid metal or intermediate metal conduit, 18 inches for PVC conduit, and 24 inches for direct-burial UF/USE cable. The checklist also says direct-burial cable is protected by a raceway to at least 18 inches below grade where it emerges. These are St. Paul checklist values and details for its covered garage context—not universal instructions for every shed or jurisdiction. See the City of Saint Paul garage electrical checklist.

The 2021 International Residential Code wiring chapter likewise illustrates that minimum cover can depend on wiring method and circuit conditions. The edition adopted locally, including any amendments, controls; the model code is not a substitute for checking local requirements. 2021 International Residential Code, Chapter 38.

Do you need a permit, disconnect, grounding, or GFCI protection?

Permit, inspection, and homeowner-work rules vary by jurisdiction. Contact the local electrical authority before work begins to ask what permits are needed, whether you may do the work yourself, which code edition applies, and when inspections must happen. Ask specifically whether the trench must be inspected before it is covered.

A detached building can also involve details beyond running conductors underground. Depending on the adopted code and the installation, requirements may address a disconnect for the shed, grounding, and GFCI protection. St. Paul’s covered detached-garage checklist states: “A disconnecting means shall be provided for all ungrounded conductors supplying a detached garage.” That is wording from that city’s checklist; confirm what applies to your shed and circuit arrangement with the local authority or a qualified electrician. The same checklist addresses a grounding electrode system in a stated feeder-or-branch-circuit context and GFCI protection for covered receptacles, but those provisions should not be assumed to apply identically to every shed.

Can you use an extension cord instead?

An extension cord is not a general substitute for a properly designed, permanent supply to a detached shed. Whether a temporary cord is allowed, and for what use or duration, depends on applicable rules and the specific conditions. Ask the local authority or a qualified electrician rather than burying an extension cord or treating it as permanent wiring.

What should you do before buying supplies or digging?

  1. List the loads. Record the lights, tools, heaters, and other equipment you expect to use, along with likely future additions.
  2. Measure the route. Note the distance from the panel to the shed and identify the route, ground conditions, and any locations where wiring may be exposed or need physical protection.
  3. Ask about local rules. Confirm the permit, inspection, homeowner-work, and code-edition requirements with the authority responsible for your property.
  4. Get the design checked. Have a qualified electrician assess the load, run length, wiring method, voltage-drop considerations, and any disconnect, grounding, and GFCI requirements.
  5. Buy only after the design is settled. UF-B underground feeder cable, conduit and fittings, and GFCI breakers or receptacles may be relevant categories, but suitability, ratings, size, and compatibility depend on the approved design. Do not choose a wire gauge, circuit size, or product from a generic example.
  6. Coordinate inspections. Find out whether an inspection is required before covering a trench and arrange it at the stage specified by the local authority.

When is professional help especially important?

Get a qualified electrician involved when the planned loads are substantial or uncertain, the run is long, the route has exposure or other complications, or you need help interpreting local requirements. A professional can determine whether the existing service and panel can support the planned work and specify a compliant design for the property. The local authority remains the source for permit and inspection rules.
