Consumer Reports’ 2026 roundup covers seven electric toothbrushes, but its publicly available summary does not identify the models. What it does show is how the brushes were assessed: cleaning performance mattered most, with ease of use, battery performance, and noise also considered. That means readers can use the testing criteria to compare brushes, but should not treat an unverified model as one of the seven picks.
What Consumer Reports’ 2026 roundup establishes
Consumer Reports updated “7 Best Electric Toothbrushes of 2026, Lab-Tested and Reviewed” on September 15, 2026. Its indexed summary reports a rating range of $8 to $400; those figures describe the prices represented in its ratings, not verified current prices for the seven picks. The summary also says lower-cost brushes in later testing rounds delivered solid cleaning ability, so a higher price or familiar brand name is not, by itself, evidence of a better clean. Consumer Reports’ 2026 roundup
The summary available for the article does not disclose the seven model names or their individual category labels. It therefore does not support a reliable ranked list of those specific products. A Philips example or any other model mentioned elsewhere should not be assumed to appear among the seven.

Cleaning performance carried the most weight
Consumer Reports recruited volunteers ages 18 to 65 who were in good dental health and already used electric toothbrushes. For the cleaning assessment, a trained technician measured plaque after participants had gone at least 12 hours without brushing or using other dental products. Each participant then brushed with a test toothbrush for two minutes, and the cleaning score reflected the difference in plaque before and after brushing.

When a brush offered several heads or modes, Consumer Reports tested the combination it considered most likely to be used in everyday life and scored the best-performing combination it tested. The rating therefore reflects a selected tested setup, not necessarily every mode or head a buyer might choose.
Usability, battery, and noise also mattered
Testers assessed how easily the brush head attached, whether brushing caused mess such as mirror splatter or foam running down the hand, and how comfortable the brush felt to hold and use. The method also considered whether the brush had a useful timer and pressure sensor.

- Optimize your routine: EasyStart for a gradual, gentle increase in brushing power, SmarTimer informing when you've reached 2 minutes, and QuadPacer to brush each section of a mouth for 30 seconds
- Brush head replacement reminder tracks how often and how hard you brush, then notifies you when it's time to replace the brush head once it's time; dental professionals recommend changing your brush head regularly
For rechargeable models, battery testing measured charging time, how long the brush ran before losing power, and how easy it was to charge. Testers evaluated noise as well, though it was a relatively small contributor to the Overall Score. Cleaning was the most important factor in that score. | What to assess | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cleaning performance | It was the largest contributor to Consumer Reports’ Overall Score. |
| Handling and comfort | Consider whether the head is easy to attach and whether the brush is comfortable to hold and use. |
| Mess while brushing | Splatter and foam running down the hand were among the ease-of-use factors testers considered. |
| Battery and charging | For rechargeable models, compare charge time, operating time before power runs out, and charging convenience. |
| Timer and pressure sensor | These features can help support thorough brushing and appropriate pressure. |
| Noise | It was assessed, but counted for less in the Overall Score than cleaning performance. |
| Price | Consumer Reports’ ratings spanned $8 to $400 in the 2026 roundup; this is not a live-price quote for a particular model. |
Oscillating or sonic: what is the difference?
Consumer Reports describes oscillating brushes as having a round head that rotates. Sonic brushes have a rectangular or oblong head that vibrates side to side. The roundup summary does not establish that either movement style is universally better, so choose based on comfort and handling rather than assuming the category alone predicts cleaning results.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Features that can support a brushing routine
A two-minute timer can help keep brushing sessions on track, while a pressure sensor can help discourage excessive force. Consumer Reports’ buying guide advises brushing for two minutes twice daily and using an appropriate amount of pressure. These features can make those habits easier to follow, but their presence does not replace brushing consistently.
