Neither electric nor gas dirt bikes are better for every rider. Electric is the stronger fit when quiet operation, selectable power and less combustion-engine service matter—and you can charge between rides. Gas is often more practical for long or remote sessions where refueling is easier than arranging a recharge. Your choice depends on the specific bike, ride length, terrain, charging or fuel access, budget and local rules.
How do electric and gas bikes compare for real-world riding?
The practical difference is not simply performance. Electric bikes need a charging plan and their ride time varies with the model, power setting, rider and terrain. Gas bikes can generally be refueled quickly when fuel is available, but their range also depends on the bike and riding conditions.
| Decision factor | Electric dirt bike | Gas dirt bike | What to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ride session | Ride time depends on the bike, power setting, rider and terrain. Manufacturer examples vary widely. Stark’s VARG EX estimates are tied to different riding contexts. | A full tank can be refilled quickly, but range depends on the model and riding conditions. | Look for model-specific range figures and whether they are measured or manufacturer estimates. Consider carrying fuel or refueling options. |
| Between sessions | Needs a compatible power source and time to recharge. The 2025 GASGAS MC-E 5 is one youth-bike example, not a category-wide charging benchmark. GASGAS lists its charging times. | Refueling avoids battery recharge time when fuel is available. | Check whether the venue has suitable power and how far fuel is from the riding area. |
| Sound | Has no combustion exhaust sound. Stark describes the VARG EX as “zero-noise”; that is the manufacturer’s description, not a third-party sound measurement. Stark VARG EX product page. | Combustion produces engine and exhaust sound. | Check venue sound limits and actual measurements for the bike you are considering. |
| Engine service | Fewer combustion-engine service tasks. Stark says the VARG EX needs no oil filters, valve adjustments or piston replacement, but it still has motorcycle wear items such as chain, brakes, tires and suspension. Stark VARG EX maintenance information. | Requires engine-specific scheduled service under the bike’s manual. | Compare the exact service schedule, parts access and local labor cost. |
| Purchase and ownership cost | Compare bike price, battery warranty and replacement terms, electricity, charger needs and parts. | Compare bike price, fuel, engine service and parts. | Use comparable bikes and an ownership period. A maker’s cost calculator is an estimate, not an independent total-cost study. |
| Rules and access | Eligibility and riding-area access depend on the model, class and jurisdiction. The AMA’s 2026 amateur equipment material includes electric models. Check the AMA equipment and rule materials. | Also subject to class, sound, emissions, registration and venue rules. | Confirm current local rules and event requirements for the exact bike. |
What do the model examples show about ride time and charging?
Stark VARG EX: an adult electric enduro example
Stark’s U.S. product page listed the VARG EX at $13,040 when checked. The page specifies 60- or 80-hp configurations, a 264-pound weight and a 7.2-kWh battery. Stark lists charging times of 3.5 hours at 120 V and 2 hours at 240 V. Its ride-time estimates differ by context: for example, it lists 37 minutes for a pro rider in hard-pack motocross and longer estimates for some enduro scenarios. These are manufacturer figures under differing conditions, not a controlled comparison with a gas bike. See Stark’s VARG EX specifications and estimates.
Stark also claims the VARG EX offers “Range similar to a full tank of gas on a 450, depending on track conditions, up to 6 hours of trail riding.” Treat that as Stark’s conditional product claim, not a universal range comparison. The same page presents a 100-hour operating-cost comparison based on global average fuel and electricity prices and maintenance per the OEM handbook with authorized-dealer work. It is the manufacturer’s estimate, not independent cost research.

GASGAS MC-E 5 (2025): a youth motocross example
GASGAS lists a 907-Wh lithium-ion battery, six ride modes, 2-kW rated output, up to 5-kW maximum power and a 40.5-kg weight for the 2025 MC-E 5. The company gives charging times of 45 minutes to 80% and 70 minutes to full. It estimates up to two hours of riding for a beginner or around 30 minutes in the highest mode. Those estimates illustrate how much pace and mode can matter; they should not be applied to adult bikes or other electric models. GASGAS MC-E 5 (2025) specifications.

Electric is a leading candidate if
- Your normal sessions fit within the bike’s realistic ride time for your pace and terrain.
- You can charge between rides and are comfortable planning around the bike’s charging time.
- Quiet operation or fewer combustion-engine service tasks is important to you.
- You have confirmed that the bike can ride at your chosen venue and qualify for any class you plan to enter.
Gas is a leading candidate if
- You ride for long stretches or in remote places where charging is uncertain.
- Quick refueling and access to fuel matter more than recharge planning.
- Local dealer, parts and service support is better for the particular gas model you are considering.
For a young or newer rider
Compare seat height, weight, controls, throttle response, power modes and the level of adult supervision required. The 2025 MC-E 5 demonstrates that adjustable modes are available on at least one youth electric model; it does not establish that electric bikes in general are safer or easier to ride.

What should you verify before buying or entering an event?
- Ride time: Find estimates or measurements for your model, terrain and expected pace. A manufacturer estimate for one bike is not a category standard.
- Charging or refueling: Confirm the power source, charging time and compatibility for an electric bike, or fuel access and carrying options for a gas bike.
- Ownership costs: Compare like-for-like bike prices, routine service, parts and energy or fuel over the period you expect to own the bike. Include battery warranty and replacement terms for electric models.
- Rules: Check local access requirements and the current rulebook for your specific class and event. The AMA’s 2026 amateur equipment list includes both electric entries, such as GASGAS MC E2 and E models, and gas entries such as MC50 and MC65; appearing on that list does not establish eligibility for every class or event. Consult current AMA racing rules and equipment information.
