Elden Ring is not a persistent-world MMO. Its multiplayer places temporary visitors in one player’s campaign for cooperation, invasions, duels, or rescue. Elden Ring Nightreign is a separate game in the same universe that organizes play into matchmaking-based expeditions. That distinction—hosted world versus discrete run—explains nearly every difference in persistence, party management, progression, matchmaking, and player-versus-player risk.
This guide compares the two systems as concrete examples of two Soulslike multiplayer models. It does not attempt to define every game marketed as a “Soulslike MMO,” and it does not treat Nightreign as an MMO in the traditional persistent-world sense.

What Elden Ring multiplayer actually is
In the base game, one player remains the host of an individual Elden Ring world. Other players are summoned into that world for a limited purpose: clearing an area, defeating a boss, scouting a dangerous route, or helping recover from a difficult fight. The guest is not joining a shared campaign that remains available between sessions.

How a co-op session starts
- Open the multiplayer menu and use a summon sign or a summoning pool. A player can place a sign for others to find, or send it to nearby summoning pools.
- The host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to reveal summon signs in the area, then selects a sign and invites that player.
- Stay in approximately the same area as the intended partner. The official multiplayer guidance describes area proximity as part of how connections are made.
- Use a multiplayer password when arranging a session with friends. A password helps the intended players find one another, but it does not turn the campaign into a permanent shared world.
The host can have two cooperative guests at once. Including the host, the online session described in the game’s manual can therefore contain up to four players, although the two guest slots are the limit for ordinary cooperative allies.
What ends the visit
An Elden Ring co-op visit is deliberately bounded. It can end if the host or a guest dies, a connection fails, the host dismisses the visitors, or the relevant boss or mini-boss objective is completed. Guests are then sent back to their own worlds rather than continuing automatically into the next area of the host’s campaign.
While guests are present, the host also gives up some solo conveniences. Torrent is unavailable, and fast travel is restricted. Those limits make a co-op run feel like a tactical escort through a selected section of the map, not like several permanent characters freely roaming a shared server.

The host receives credit for progress made in the host’s world, such as defeating the area’s objective. A summoned guest does not receive a copy of the host’s campaign state. The guest keeps progress earned in their own world, including ordinary character development and items that the game’s rules award to them, but the host’s unlocked paths and defeated bosses do not become shared save data.
This arrangement is useful when one player wants help with a specific obstacle. It is less suitable for a group that expects one continuous story in which every player advances the same world after each person logs off.
Elden Ring’s multiplayer includes danger as well as cooperation
Co-op does not remove the game’s adversarial layer. Invasions, hostile summon signs, arranged duels, and hunter rescue all use the same broad idea of one player’s world becoming a meeting point for other players.
Invasions
An invader targets a host who is eligible for an invasion. The official guidance describes ordinary invasions as generally available after a host has opened the world through co-op; the Taunter’s Tongue provides an additional way to invite invasion pressure. In practical terms, inviting help can also expose the host to an enemy player, so a cooperative route may become a three-sided fight involving the host, allies, and an invader.
Duels and hunter assistance
Players who want a controlled fight can use hostile summon signs to arrange a duel rather than waiting for an unsolicited invasion. Hunters provide another role: a player can answer a host’s call for assistance against an invader. These systems make Elden Ring multiplayer more than a cooperative campaign add-on; they are a set of optional competitive and rescue interactions layered over the host’s adventure.
Asynchronous contact
You can encounter other players without joining a live party. Messages, bloodstains, phantoms, and summon signs communicate warnings, examples of recent deaths, or invitations to a session. Group passwords prioritize signs and traces from players using the same password. They improve the chance of seeing a friend’s signals, but they do not place those friends in the same continuous world.
How Nightreign changes the multiplayer loop
ELDEN RING NIGHTREIGN is described by its publisher as a “standalone multiplayer co-op action survival game.” It is a separate title, not an update that converts Elden Ring’s campaign into an MMO. Its basic unit of play is an expedition: players enter a run, make choices as the map and threats develop, and work toward a final Nightlord encounter.
Choosing solo or co-op before an expedition
Nightreign asks players to choose a solo or cooperative format before starting an expedition. Solo play can be online or offline. Cooperative play requires an internet connection, because the run is built around connecting the participating players. Matchmaking passwords allow friends to coordinate rather than relying only on open matchmaking.
Recommended Free Tools
The distinction matters at the start of a run. In Elden Ring, a host opens a particular location in an already-existing campaign and summons visitors. In Nightreign, the party is assembled as part of the expedition structure itself. The game is therefore session-oriented from the outset instead of adding a temporary visitor to a persistent personal world.
Host state and teammate rewards
Nightreign ties rewards to the matchmaking host’s world state. The host is not merely the person who pressed “start”; the host’s state can influence what teammates receive at the end of the expedition. Friends should decide who hosts with that rule in mind, especially when different players are trying to advance different progression states.
Asynchronous traces inside a run
Nightreign retains the series’ indirect sense of other players. Grey phantoms reenact movements from active players’ runs, while red phantoms represent players who died and can leave equipment behind. These echoes make the world feel populated without requiring every apparent character to be a live participant in the current expedition.
Deep of Night is a more explicit matchmaking example
Deep of Night illustrates how far Nightreign can move toward structured online competition without becoming a conventional MMO. The mode-specific rules allow expeditions for one to three players, match players generally with similar depth ratings, and alter those ratings after wins or losses.

These rules apply to Deep of Night specifically. They should not be presented as universal rules for every Nightreign activity, because mode settings can change with patches and different activities can use different matchmaking policies.
Elden Ring and Nightreign compared
| Multiplayer axis | Elden Ring | Nightreign |
|---|---|---|
| Core structure | An individual host world with summoned visitors | Discrete expeditions assembled through solo selection or co-op matchmaking |
| Cooperative party | Host plus up to two cooperative guests; the described online session supports up to four total players when other roles are included | Deep of Night allows one to three expedition players; other activities may use their own rules |
| Persistence | The guest session ends on death, disconnection, dismissal, or boss/mini-boss completion; campaign progress is centered on the host | Runs are self-contained expeditions, and the matchmaking host’s world state affects teammate rewards |
| Matchmaking | Summon signs, summoning pools, passwords, and eligibility based on the host’s world | Expedition matchmaking, with passwords for friends; Deep of Night generally considers depth ratings |
| PvP | Invasions, hostile summons, duels, and hunter rescue | The cited official descriptions emphasize cooperative PvE; they do not establish a general Nightreign PvP mode |
| Indirect contact | Messages, bloodstains, phantoms, summon signs, and group-password prioritization | Grey movement echoes and red death echoes that can leave equipment |
Is either game an MMO?
That depends on which MMO characteristics you mean. A massively multiplayer online game usually implies a persistent shared world, characters who remain present between sessions, large numbers of players occupying the same spaces, and progression that continues inside that shared world. Elden Ring does not provide that model: its world belongs to the host, its cooperative visitors are temporary, and its asynchronous traces are not live residents.
Nightreign is more multiplayer-centered because it begins with an expedition and matchmaking, but it is still organized around discrete runs rather than a single permanent server. A three-day-and-night expedition, its exploration decisions, and its Nightlord finale define a session that starts and ends. Calling it an online co-op survival action game is more precise than calling it a persistent MMO.
The phrase “Soulslike MMO” therefore covers unlike designs. One game might use an open persistent world, another might use small instanced groups, and a third might use asynchronous signs and ghosts. For Elden Ring versus Nightreign, persistence and session boundaries are more informative than the marketing label.
Which multiplayer model fits a particular goal?
You want help with one boss or area
Elden Ring’s summon system is the closer fit. You can reveal signs near the obstacle, complete the objective, and return the guest to their own world. Expect a focused visit rather than a full shared playthrough, and remember that an active co-op world can be exposed to invasions.
You want a planned run with the same friends
Nightreign’s expedition structure is more natural for a group that wants everyone to enter the same run at the same time. Use a matchmaking password, agree on the host, and account for the fact that the host’s world state affects teammate rewards.
You want competitive encounters
Elden Ring has the clearer documented competitive layer in the material compared here: invasions, hostile signs, duels, and hunter responses. Nightreign’s cited descriptions support cooperative expedition matchmaking, including the rating-based Deep of Night rules, but do not establish a general PvP system.
You want to play alone without a connection
Elden Ring’s campaign can be played as an individual experience with multiplayer left unused. Nightreign explicitly permits solo play online or offline, while its cooperative expeditions require an internet connection.

How many friends can join an Elden Ring session?
Two cooperative guests can be summoned into the host’s world at the same time. Additional online roles can occupy the session’s remaining capacity, but they are not additional co-op campaign partners. If three friends all expect to move through the story as allies, the two-guest limit requires rotating or splitting the group.
Can a password make co-op permanent?
No. A password helps identify the intended players and prioritizes their signs or traces. It does not preserve a party after the session ends, copy the host’s progress into a guest’s save, or remove the normal conditions that close a visit.
Can a friend be invaded while helping?
Yes, when the host is eligible for invasion. Co-op opens the possibility of an invader entering the host’s world, and the Taunter’s Tongue can invite additional invasion pressure. A password chooses who you are trying to summon; it is not an immunity setting.
Will matchmaking always be fast?
No reliable current queue-time or population statistic is established here. Availability can vary by platform, region, time of day, game mode, character or build conditions, and whether players are using passwords. A quiet summon pool does not prove that a game has no players, and a busy period does not guarantee a connection for every character.

Edition contents and store availability are subject to change, so verify the platform and the current listing before buying.
Official pages accessed on October 13, 2026 displayed a March 31, 2026 Nightreign hotfix among the latest news. That listing is not evidence that no later update exists elsewhere. Balance, matchmaking rules, edition contents, and mode restrictions can change through patches. Elden Ring’s multiplayer behavior can also be adjusted by updates, so consult the current in-game notices when a menu or connection rule differs from this description.
Bottom line: choose the session model, not the label
Elden Ring delivers temporary, purpose-driven visits inside a player’s personal campaign. Its strengths are targeted help, invasions, duels, rescue play, and a rich asynchronous layer. Nightreign delivers a separate, matchmaking-first expedition loop with solo and co-op entry points, host-dependent rewards, and mode-specific systems such as Deep of Night’s depth ratings. Neither example is a traditional persistent-world MMO. The practical choice is whether you want to visit a friend’s world for a task or enter a self-contained expedition as a party.
