A VPN is optional for Elden Ring: it can change the public IP address visible to a peer and may change how a connection is routed, but the available evidence does not verify five VPNs in Elden Ring or show that any provider reduces its latency. Treat general gaming VPN comparisons as starting points, not as game-specific test results.
What a VPN can—and cannot—do for Elden Ring
Elden Ring includes Online Co-op and Online PvP. Bandai Namco lists online play for up to three players and Arenas for up to six. On PC, Steam describes co-op with up to two other Tarnished teammates. Those are game-mode capacities, not VPN performance measurements. See Bandai Namco’s official Elden Ring page and the Steam store listing.
A VPN routes your connection through a VPN server, so a peer may see the server’s public IP address rather than yours. Steam Support says a VPN is the only reliable way to prevent any game from sharing your IP address, while also explaining that IP sharing depends on how a game handles peer-to-peer connections. That is general Steam guidance—not confirmation that every Elden Ring mode exposes your IP or uses a particular network route. Read Steam’s explanation of peer-to-peer networking and IP sharing.
Steam Datagram Relay can hide IP addresses for traffic using its supported networking APIs and may find a faster route for some players. Valve also cautions that a relay can be slower than a direct route when its data centers are not near the game server. Its documentation does not establish that every Elden Ring connection uses the relay. Details are in Valve’s Steam Datagram Relay documentation.

Why a “best VPN” ranking is not established
Available 2026 gaming VPN comparisons discuss providers and general gaming scenarios, but they do not establish a controlled ranking for Elden Ring. No Elden Ring-specific VPN latency results or verified provider tests are available here. A general speed claim, a test in a different game, or a provider’s advertised performance cannot be presented as an Elden Ring result.
For that reason, this guide does not name a winner or label providers tested and verified. A credible ranking would need comparable results for the same platform and region, with the game mode, baseline connection, VPN endpoint, protocol, and test date disclosed. General comparison coverage can help identify candidates, but its findings are not a substitute for those measurements.

How to evaluate a VPN for your setup
If you want to use a VPN for privacy or to test a different route, compare services using evidence relevant to your device and location. These criteria help distinguish useful measurements from broad marketing claims:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →- Nearby-route latency and stability: Look for baseline and VPN ping measurements from your region, repeated over time. Download speed alone does not establish low or stable game latency.
- Server location and distance: Start with a nearby VPN endpoint. A farther server might improve a poor route in some circumstances, but only a test on your connection can show that; added distance can also worsen latency.
- Protocol: Check which protocol was actually used in any performance test. Results from one protocol should not be treated as proof of performance with another.
- Platform setup: Confirm whether the VPN supports your device directly or requires another supported configuration. A setup that works on PC may not apply to a console.
- Privacy controls and device coverage: Review the provider’s current privacy terms, relevant controls, and account limits. Verify these details with the provider because they can change.
For a meaningful comparison, record your normal connection first, then compare it with the VPN using the same game mode, platform, region, and conditions. Note the VPN endpoint and protocol, and repeat measurements rather than relying on a single result. If the VPN makes the connection less stable or slower, disconnecting it is a practical way to check whether the route is the cause.

Platform and version matter
Elden Ring is available on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, and PC; Bandai Namco’s official page also lists a Nintendo Switch 2-only Tarnished Edition. The official page reports new content for PlayStation, Xbox, and Steam in August 2026. Availability and setup may differ by platform, so a result for one device or edition should not be generalized to all players. Check the official game page for the current platform information.
For PC players using Steam, the platform offers a networking privacy preference with Never, Always, Default, and Friends Only options for supported traffic. Steam recommends most users leave it on Default. This is not a universal Elden Ring setting: the relay behavior applies only to supported networking, and Steam’s guidance does not prove how every game mode is routed.

Claims to treat cautiously
- A VPN is not required to play Elden Ring online.
- A VPN does not guarantee lower ping, eliminate lag, or protect against every attack.
- Steam Datagram Relay may mask IP addresses for supported traffic, but it does not establish protection for every Elden Ring connection.
- General gaming VPN reviews do not prove how a service performs in Elden Ring on your platform and route.
