Do you need Elden Ring to play Shadow of the Erdtree?
Yes. Shadow of the Erdtree is an expansion, and you need the Elden Ring base game on the platform where you want to play it. Steam’s product description calls it “an expansion to ELDEN RING, the 2022 Game of the Year.” Steam’s expansion listing states the base-game requirement.
Before checkout, confirm whether the store listing is for the standalone expansion or an edition containing both the base game and expansion. Buying the DLC alone will not provide the base game.

How do you access Shadow of the Erdtree?
PlayStation’s official instructions specify two boss prerequisites and an in-game interaction. Use this spoiler-light checklist:
- Own and install Shadow of the Erdtree for the same platform as your copy of Elden Ring.
- Defeat Starscourge Radahn and Mohg, Lord of Blood.
- Travel to Mohg’s boss area and interact with the withered arm emerging from the cocoon.
The official instructions say that touching the arm begins the new chapter. PlayStation’s Elden Ring page gives the access requirements.
What does NG+ mean for DLC access and readiness?
The official access checklist names the boss gates and the cocoon interaction. The inspected official sources do not explain whether NG+ changes the DLC’s difficulty, recommend a character level or build, or say whether starting a new journey resets either prerequisite. That leaves the specific NG+ consequences unverified; do not treat a particular level, build, or journey state as an official guarantee of readiness.
For your save, verify the listed prerequisites in the journey you are currently playing and check whether the arm interaction is available. If it is not, confirm your DLC installation and platform match, then review the boss requirements against that save.
Is the Tarnished Pack the expansion?
No. Bandai Namco Europe’s 28 August 2026 announcement describes ELDEN RING Tarnished Edition for Nintendo Switch 2 as including the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree. It also says new content is available to players on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC via Steam. The separate Tarnished Pack adds new classes, gear, and Torrent appearance options; Steam’s announcement feed specifies two starting classes and new armor, with Torrent customization usable in the base game and the expansion. The pack is an add-on, not a replacement for the DLC.
The same Bandai Namco announcement says the game received more than 400 Game of the Year nominations; that figure refers to nominations, not awards won.
