Choose based on the hardware you already own and whether handheld play matters. Nintendo Switch 2 now has a released version, Elden Ring Tarnished Edition, which bundles the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree expansion and the new Tarnished Pack additions. It supports both docked and handheld play.
If you already own a PS5, Xbox or suitable gaming PC, the official information gives no reason to purchase another system solely for Elden Ring. Those platforms already have the game, and the Tarnished Pack additions are available for purchase on them. Switch 2 is the clearest choice for a player who specifically values Nintendo hardware and portable play; PS5, Xbox and PC are sensible choices when they are already part of your setup.

The best version depends less on an advertised technical winner than on how you play.

The table describes confirmed content and platform fit, not comparative hardware performance. A platform can be the right purchase because it is the one you already own, even when no source establishes that it renders the game faster or at a higher resolution.
Nintendo Switch 2: what Tarnished Edition changes
It is a released version, not a future port
FromSoftware announced the global release date as August 28, 2026, and Bandai Namco later confirmed that Elden Ring Tarnished Edition was available on that date. That distinction matters: Switch 2 owners can buy and play the released edition rather than waiting for a planned conversion.
The Switch 2 product page labels the package “Nintendo Switch 2 Only.” It identifies three principal components: the base game, Tarnished Pack DLC and Shadow of the Erdtree DLC.

The bundle contains the expansion
Shadow of the Erdtree is the large paid expansion for Elden Ring. In the Switch 2 Tarnished Edition, it is included instead of requiring a separate expansion purchase. If you buy Shadow of the Erdtree separately on another platform, the expansion requires the Elden Ring base game.
The Tarnished Pack adds new customization and starting options
The Switch 2 edition includes four new armor sets, two new starting classes and three appearance options for Torrent. These are the additions referred to as the Tarnished Pack. The new classes affect how a new character begins, while the armor and Torrent options provide additional ways to customize a playthrough.
The Tarnished Pack is not exclusive to Switch 2. FromSoftware’s release announcement says it is available for purchase on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and Steam. Bandai Namco’s American launch announcement specifically names PS5, Xbox Series X|S and PC via Steam. Because the list can vary by regional storefront, check the store for your market before purchasing.

Handheld and docked modes are the defining difference
Bandai Namco describes the Switch 2 edition as playable in both docked and handheld mode. That gives Switch 2 a use case the other listed versions do not offer in this comparison: moving between a television and a portable Nintendo system without changing platforms.

PlayStation 5: the straightforward choice for existing owners
The publisher lists Elden Ring for PS5, and its store lists standard and Shadow of the Erdtree editions. The Tarnished Pack additions are also available for PS5. That means a PS5 owner does not need Switch 2 to access the new classes, armor sets or Torrent appearances.
PS5 is therefore a practical choice when the console is already connected to your television, your existing purchases and friends are on PlayStation, or you simply want to continue using the platform you know. Buying another console solely for this game adds hardware cost without an official performance finding to justify it.
When comparing listings, distinguish an edition that contains only the base game from one that includes Shadow of the Erdtree. The expansion is not automatically part of every standard listing. The Tarnished Pack is a separate content question from the expansion: a PS5 buyer may need to verify both items in the specific store listing.

The publisher lists Xbox Series X|S, and its official store lists Xbox Series X editions of the base game and an edition associated with the expansion. The Tarnished Pack is available on Xbox Series X|S. FromSoftware’s broader platform list also includes Xbox One.

What Smart Delivery means here
Official 2024 product information says the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox One versions use Smart Delivery, and that Xbox One and Xbox Series versions can be played between those platforms. This is useful for an Xbox owner who may upgrade consoles or move between generations. Smart Delivery is an Xbox distribution feature; it should not be interpreted as evidence that every edition, add-on or regional store listing has identical purchase wording.
Before buying, open the current Xbox listing and confirm the included game, the expansion status and the platform compatibility shown for your account and region. Store metadata and product availability can change.
PC via Steam: best for players already set up on PC
The publisher lists PC via Steam as a platform for Elden Ring and for the Tarnished Pack. PC is a sensible choice when you already have a suitable gaming computer and prefer Steam’s library and account system.

No PC performance specification or benchmark was established by the official material used for this comparison. Do not infer a particular frame rate, resolution, graphics preset or loading result from the fact that the game is on PC. Those outcomes depend on the specific computer, settings, drivers and current build, and require separate testing.
For a Steam purchase, read the individual listing carefully. Confirm whether it is the base game, an edition that includes Shadow of the Erdtree, or a listing for the Tarnished Pack additions. The expansion requires the base game when purchased separately.
How to choose when you already own a platform
You own a PS5, Xbox or gaming PC
Start with the system already in your home. The official sources establish that all three platform groups can access Elden Ring, and the Tarnished Pack is available beyond Switch 2. There is no documented reason in these sources to buy a second system solely for a technical advantage.

Choose the edition that supplies the content you want. If you have never bought the game, an edition containing the base game and Shadow of the Erdtree may be simpler than assembling them separately. If you already own the base game, check whether the Tarnished Pack and expansion are sold as separate add-ons for your platform.
You care most about playing away from a television
Switch 2 is the only platform in this comparison that the publisher explicitly describes in both handheld and docked modes. If portable access is central to your decision, Tarnished Edition is the natural fit. Treat that as a play-style recommendation, not a claim that the Switch 2 version matches or exceeds another platform’s technical output.
You are buying new hardware for this game
Decide first whether the hardware has other uses for you. Switch 2 makes sense when Nintendo access and portable play justify the purchase. A PS5, Xbox Series X|S or gaming PC makes more sense when it also fits your wider library and existing setup. A fair comparison must separate confirmed facts from claims that need current testing. The available publisher and developer pages establish release status, content, platforms and play modes. They do not establish:
- a winner for frame rate or frame-rate consistency;
- comparative resolution or image quality;
- loading-time differences;
- platform-specific stability or visual settings;
- current retail prices, stock or regional promotions;
- save-transfer behavior between platforms;
- cross-play or cross-platform online functionality; or
- comparative online performance.
For that reason, this guide does not call Switch 2 technically superior, inferior or equivalent to PS5, Xbox or PC. A buyer who considers those factors decisive should consult current platform-specific testing and the exact store listing for their region.

Prices, availability and edition labels can change
The official Bandai Namco US store, accessed October 11, 2026, listed Switch 2 Tarnished Edition, PS5 and Xbox Series X base-game editions, and Shadow of the Erdtree editions including Steam. That confirms the types of products being offered at that time, not a permanent price or stock guarantee.
Do not treat a retailer’s current price as a universal price for every country, format or edition. Check whether a displayed amount is for the base game, the expansion, the complete package or the Tarnished Pack. Physical stock and digital storefront availability may also change after the date above.
Why the release matters to the wider game
Elden Ring has broad commercial reach: FromSoftware reported 30 million units shipped worldwide as of March 2025. That figure includes digital downloads and Steam downloads. The date is part of the statistic; it should not be presented as a current October 2026 sales total or rounded into a newer number without a later statement.
The Switch 2 launch extends that established game to Nintendo hardware for the first time. Bandai Namco’s August 28, 2026 launch announcement describes the experience as playable in docked or handheld mode. For a reader deciding between versions, the important consequence is practical: the same named adventure is now available within a Nintendo-focused portable setup, while the new Tarnished Pack is also offered to players on the other listed platforms.

For everyone else, use the platform already in your home unless portability or Nintendo access is worth changing systems.
