Elden Ring multiplayer is host-based. One player opens their world, other players enter through summon signs, and the group works within the host’s current area. A normal co-op party is one host plus up to two guests. The host can ask for help with a boss, but opening the world also normally makes that host eligible for invasions.
Use a Furlcalling Finger Remedy to reveal signs. Gold signs are cooperative, red signs are hostile or duel signs, and blue hunters can be called in to fight an invader. Passwords make it practical for friends to meet, while summoning pools provide a faster route to nearby help.

How Elden Ring multiplayer is organized
Every multiplayer session has a host world and one or more visiting players. Progress, enemies, and the active boss belong to the host’s world. Guests enter temporarily to help or fight, then return to their own games when the session ends.

Co-op
Co-op is cooperative progression. The host reveals a gold summon sign, selects a helper, and the group usually travels to the area boss or mini-boss. The host remains responsible for the world state and receives the benefit of defeating the target.
#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Invasions
An invasion is an unscheduled hostile session. An invader enters with one explicit objective: kill the host. Invaders appear as red spirits and use invasion items rather than a sign that the host deliberately selected.
Duels
A duel is an agreed fight. The host chooses a red Duelist’s Furled Finger sign and summons that player intentionally, so it is different from an invasion even though both use red visual cues.
Hunter rescue
Hunters are the counter-invasion option. A host who has been invaded can request help with a White Cipher Ring; a player who has activated a Blue Cipher Ring may then be summoned as a blue hunter whose goal is to defeat the invader.
Party size, movement limits, and area restrictions
The ordinary co-op maximum is one host and two cooperative guests. A multiplayer session can therefore contain four players when an invader is also present: the host, two helpers, and one invader. Hosting co-op disables Torrent and fast travel until the visitors leave.
Co-op cannot be started in an area where the host’s area boss has already been defeated. If a summon sign never appears in a cleared zone, the defeated boss is usually the reason rather than a failed password.
Players should meet approximately in the same area. Agree on a Site of Grace, a boss entrance, or an activated summoning pool before placing signs; choosing different regions of the map makes a sign easy to miss.
How to summon a friend for co-op
- Choose a meeting point. Stand near the same Site of Grace, the target boss door, or a summoning pool. The host and helper should be in approximately the same area.
- Set one multiplayer password. Open the Multiplayer menu and enter the same case-sensitive password on both games. Matching the capitalization matters.
- Have the helper place a sign. The helper selects Tarnished’s Furled Finger and places a local gold sign at the agreed location. The sign is cooperative and can be interacted with by the host.
- Reveal signs as host. The host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy. Gold signs then become visible in the surrounding area when a matching player is available.
- Summon the helper. Interact with the friend’s gold sign and confirm the summon. The host’s Furlcalling Finger Remedy is consumed when co-op is established.
- Add a second guest if needed. Repeat the process for another gold sign, staying within the two-guest limit.
- Play through the target encounter. Keep in mind that the host cannot use Torrent or fast travel while guests are present, and the party remains in the host’s world.
If the friend’s sign is not visible, both players should confirm the password character by character, move to the same landmark, verify that the host has not already defeated the local area boss, and place the sign again after using the remedy.

Summoning pools and random co-op
Small stone crucifix markers identify summoning pools. After a pool has been activated, a helper can use a Small Golden Effigy to send a cooperative sign to available pools instead of placing one at a precise spot. A host uses a Furlcalling Finger Remedy near the pool to see signs sent there.
This method is useful when you want help with a nearby boss but do not have a specific friend waiting at a landmark. It trades precise meeting control for a larger pool of potential helpers. A friend can still use the pool system if both players coordinate the relevant location and password.
What ends a co-op session
A guest does not remain permanently in the host’s world. The session ends under any of these conditions:
- The host defeats the relevant area boss or mini-boss.
- The host or a guest dies.
- A participant uses the severing item to leave.
- The host removes a guest.
- A connection failure disconnects a participant.
When the session ends, guests return to their own worlds. Defeating the target is therefore the normal successful conclusion, while death, severing, and disconnection are exits rather than alternate forms of progress for the host.
Why co-op can lead to invasions
Opening your world for co-op normally makes the host invasion-eligible. An invader uses a Bloody Finger or Small Red Effigy and is randomly summoned with the goal of killing the host. The invader appears as a red spirit and is not a helper selected by the host.
With two co-op guests present, the host and helpers can fight the invader together. This creates the possible three-versus-one arrangement: one host, up to two helpers, and one invader. Co-op therefore provides assistance but carries an intentional risk that another player may enter the session.
Solo invasions with Taunter’s Tongue
Taunter’s Tongue lets a host invite invasions without first being in co-op. It is the deliberate solo-invasion option for players who want hostile encounters while playing alone.
Taunter’s Tongue also changes the capacity rules. If two invaders are present, only one cooperative guest can join. That is different from the ordinary two-guest co-op limit and prevents a full two-helper party from joining a session that already contains two invaders.

An invasion ends when the host or invader dies, the host disconnects, the host uses an eligible exit, or the host begins an applicable area-boss fight. The invader’s objective is the host; defeating other participants does not by itself complete the invasion.
Duels: controlled red-sign fights
For a consensual fight, the challenger uses Duelist’s Furled Finger to create a red summon sign. The host then chooses that sign, so both players agree to the encounter before it starts.
Because a duel is initiated through a sign, it is not the same as an invasion. Use a clear meeting point and communicate the intended rules before summoning. The red color identifies the hostile nature of the visitor, while the host’s deliberate selection distinguishes a duel from a random invasion.
Hunter rescue after an invasion
If an invasion begins and you want outside assistance, the host uses White Cipher Ring. A player with Blue Cipher Ring active can be summoned as a hunter. The hunter’s role is to defeat the invader, not to advance the host toward the boss as a normal gold-sign guest would.

Multiplayer passwords and Group Passwords
Multiplayer password
The ordinary multiplayer password is case-sensitive and controls summon-sign matching. When a password is set, the game shows golden or red signs from players using that exact password in their own settings. For a private friend session, both players should enter the same password before placing or revealing signs.

A password narrows sign visibility to matching players; it does not turn the host world into a separate private server. The normal area, boss, item, and party rules still apply, including the two-guest limit and the host’s invasion eligibility.
Group Password
A Group Password serves a different purpose. It prioritizes signs, messages, bloodstains, and spirits associated with the same group, making those online elements more likely to appear. It can be used alongside a multiplayer password.
For summon signs, the ordinary multiplayer password takes precedence when signs are displayed. Use the multiplayer password when you need a specific friend; use a Group Password when you want to prioritize a community’s online activity without restricting matching to one exact player.

Troubleshooting missing signs and failed summons
The friend’s sign does not appear
- Check that both passwords match exactly, including uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Confirm that the helper used Tarnished’s Furled Finger, not a red-sign or invasion item.
- Make sure the host used Furlcalling Finger Remedy and is looking at the agreed location.
- Move both players near the same Site of Grace, boss door, or summoning pool.
- Verify that the host has not already defeated the area boss.
- Cancel and replace the sign if the first placement was made before the host activated the remedy.
The host cannot summon a third helper
The normal party allows only two cooperative guests. A third gold sign cannot create a larger standard co-op party. If two invaders are present because of Taunter’s Tongue, the allowance changes to one co-op guest while both invaders remain.
The host cannot use Torrent or fast travel
This is expected while guests are present. Complete the encounter, sever the session, or wait for the connection to end before attempting mounted travel or fast travel.
A session ended unexpectedly
Check whether a participant died, used the severing item, was removed, or lost connection. Those events all return guests to their own worlds. If the host crossed into an applicable area-boss fight, an invasion can also end as the game transitions into that encounter.
A practical choice guide
- Need a named friend for a boss? Use a shared multiplayer password, have the friend place a gold Tarnished’s Furled Finger sign, and reveal it with Furlcalling Finger Remedy.
- Need any nearby helper? Activate a summoning pool and use Small Golden Effigy for pool-based matching.
- Want a fair, agreed player fight? Use Duelist’s Furled Finger and select the red sign yourself.
- Want hostile play while alone? Use Taunter’s Tongue, understanding that it makes the host invasion-eligible and changes the guest limit when two invaders are present.
- Already being invaded and need protection? Use White Cipher Ring; a Blue Cipher Ring player can arrive as a hunter.
Key rules to remember
Gold signs mean cooperation, red signs mean hostile or duel interaction, and blue arrivals are hunters responding to an invasion. The host controls the world and the summon, but co-op removes Torrent and fast travel and normally opens the door to an invader. Passwords solve the friend-matching problem; Group Passwords merely prioritize shared online activity. Finally, every visit is temporary: a boss victory, death, severing, removal, disconnection, or qualifying boss transition sends guests back to their own worlds.
