There are two official Elden Ring manga adaptations, and they are deliberately trying to do different things. Nikiichi Tobita’s The Road to the Erdtree is a licensed gag manga that turns the game’s grim situations into recurring jokes. Elden Ring: Become Lord, created by Hand Punch (Tegekiken) and scripted by 21g, is an earnest, full-color adventure about one Tarnished following a selected path toward the Elden Lord title.
Neither is a panel-by-panel replacement for the game. The game gives you an original character, an open route, optional areas and multiple endings. The manga series choose a protagonist, reorder events and compress the world for a fixed reading experience. Which one feels “closest” depends on whether you mean the game’s humor, its atmosphere, its plot beats or its player freedom.

This distinction explains why someone can recognize a location or character in a manga while feeling that the scene has an entirely different emotional register.
The Road to the Erdtree: the serious game seen through a comedy lens
What kind of manga is it?
Yen Press describes volume 1 as “an absurd comedy adventure.” That label is important: the series is not simply adding occasional jokes to a faithful retelling. Comedy is its organizing principle. Situations that are dangerous or tragic in the game are staged as setups for embarrassment, misunderstanding or physical comedy.

How the opening changes the mood
Early in the game, a newly arrived Tarnished is exposed, under-equipped and surrounded by threats. The manga keeps that recognizable vulnerability but immediately plays it for laughs. Early encounters that establish danger in the game become opportunities for a gag, with the visual emphasis moving from dread to Aseo’s reaction and the consequences of his poor decisions.
That approach lets the manga use familiar story beats without asking readers to experience them with the same solemnity. A threatening introduction can still happen, but the page composition, timing and reaction make the event comic. Readers who expect the game’s oppressive quiet may therefore find the adaptation intentionally irreverent rather than tonally faithful.
Aseo is not a blank player avatar
The game’s Tarnished is a vessel for your choices. Aseo is a character with a defined personality, visible limitations and a consistent tendency to make situations worse. His exposed vulnerability, bad decisions and emotional reactions supply the story’s point of view.
Because Aseo is fixed, the manga can build running jokes and callbacks that would not work with a custom protagonist. The trade-off is agency: you are watching one person fail, improvise and react instead of deciding which class to use, which path to explore or when to retreat.

What happens to the game’s plot?
The Road to the Erdtree retains recognizable places and non-player characters, but it selects and rearranges events to make each chapter work as comedy. A route that is optional or late in a playthrough can be introduced when it produces a better joke; a dramatic reveal can be interrupted by a visual punchline. The result is a reinterpretation of the game’s journey, not a checklist of every quest, item description or ending.
If you want to identify a scene, look for the underlying game situation rather than expecting identical dialogue or motivation. The manga’s question is usually “How can this familiar danger become funny for Aseo?” rather than “How can this cutscene be reproduced exactly?”
Become Lord: a conventional, full-color quest
The premise and creators
Become Lord is the earnest alternative. Hand Punch (Tegekiken) provides the full-color adaptation, with a script by 21g. Its official premise follows one Tarnished who is guided by Grace into the Lands Between, meets the setting’s characters, explores dungeons, fights powerful bosses and seeks the title of Elden Lord.

KADOKAWA’s English announcement frames it as an epic adventure centered on “one of The Tarnished.” That wording signals a fixed hero and a readable forward motion rather than a sequence of player-selected experiments.

Why it feels closer to a fantasy adventure than to a playthrough
The game’s appeal often comes from uncertainty: you can miss a path, discover a hidden area hours later, change your build or pursue several objectives at once. Become Lord has to make those possibilities legible on the page. It therefore chooses a sequence of meetings, dungeons and boss battles and presents them as one protagonist’s campaign.
This compression improves narrative clarity. A reader can follow the hero’s goal and understand why the next confrontation matters without managing a quest log. It also removes the wandering that gives the game its distinctive rhythm. The manga cannot reproduce every detour, build choice or optional ending without losing the shape of a single adventure.
Full color and action pacing
Full color gives the adaptation a different way to communicate the Lands Between. Landscapes, character designs and boss attacks can be read at a glance, while action scenes are arranged for comic pages and vertical-scroll reading. The pace is controlled by the page rather than by stamina, retries or exploration time.

That makes Become Lord a better fit for readers who want a focused visual quest. It is less suitable if the part you love most is testing an unusual build, getting lost in an optional region or deciding which major objective to postpone.

How the adaptations change the story
Protagonist agency
In the game, “the Tarnished” is intentionally incomplete until the player supplies a name, appearance, combat style and moral direction. The two manga replace that openness with authorial perspective. Aseo’s personality creates jokes; Become Lord’s Tarnished creates a continuous heroic arc.
Route and sequence
An open-world game can support multiple orders of discovery. A manga must decide what appears on the next page. Both series therefore use a selective route through the setting. Recognizable meetings and fights may appear, but their order and emphasis serve the adaptation’s pacing.
Endings and lore density
The game’s environmental storytelling spreads information across descriptions, architecture, optional dialogue and several possible endings. A linear comic has less room for every branch. Neither publisher’s premise establishes a one-to-one reproduction of every quest, ending or item description, so treat both books as focused interpretations rather than complete lore archives.

Humor
The game contains humor, but it usually emerges from player behavior, strange world details or an unexpected encounter. The Road to the Erdtree makes that comic potential explicit and frequent. Become Lord keeps the emphasis on adventure and treats humor, where present, as a secondary note rather than the engine of the scene.

Are the Elden Ring manga canon?
They are official adaptations, but “official” does not mean that either series is a single, exhaustive canon route through the game. The available publisher descriptions establish their formats, protagonists and broad premises; they do not certify that every quest, ending or item description is reproduced exactly.
The safest way to read them is as licensed parallel interpretations. The game remains the source of the interactive world, while each manga chooses what to show and how to frame it. If a manga’s scene conflicts with your playthrough, that is normally an adaptation choice rather than a contradiction you must solve in the game’s lore.
Which manga is closest to the game?
- For the game’s oppressive setting with the comedy turned up: choose The Road to the Erdtree. It uses recognizable places and characters but makes parody, slapstick and Aseo’s reactions the central experience.
- For a straightforward visual retelling: choose Become Lord. Its fixed Tarnished, selected route and full-color action are easier to follow as a conventional fantasy quest.
- For player freedom, exploration and multiple outcomes: choose the game itself. No linear adaptation can reproduce the effect of choosing a build, missing a dungeon, changing direction or discovering a secret at your own pace.
“Closest” therefore has three answers: Become Lord is closer in seriousness and adventure structure; The Road to the Erdtree is closer to the experience of recognizing the game’s situations and laughing at their absurdity; neither is close to the game’s agency.

Elden Ring: The Road to the Erdtree, Vol. 1
Yen Press publishes the comedy adaptation under this title. Its ISBN is 9781975373863. Expect an Aseo-led interpretation in which early threats, familiar characters and the Tarnished’s exposed state are arranged for jokes rather than solemn escalation.
Elden Ring: Become Lord, Vol. 1
KADOKAWA publishes the full-color adventure under this title. Its ISBN is 9784046833099. Expect the beginning of one Tarnished’s guided journey, with character meetings, dungeon exploration and boss confrontations organized into a continuous quest.
Sales context
In a 2024 announcement for Become Lord, KADOKAWA said Elden Ring had exceeded 20 million cumulative shipments worldwide at that time. That is a historical publisher-reported figure, not a current sales total for the game or either manga.
A practical choice for different readers
- You want to laugh at familiar scenes. Start with The Road to the Erdtree; its premise promises parody from the outset.
- You want a serious hero’s journey. Start with Become Lord; its fixed protagonist and linear route provide a clearer narrative spine.
- You are new to the setting. Become Lord is the more conventional entry point because it explains the journey through one character’s progression.
- You already know every boss and quest. The Road to the Erdtree offers the sharper change of perspective, while Become Lord lets you see familiar material reordered as an adventure.
- You want to make the decisions yourself. Return to the game, since the manga formats necessarily choose the hero, route and pacing for you.
The two series are not competing editions of one identical story. They are different answers to the same setting: one asks how funny the Lands Between can become when its dangers are filtered through Aseo, and the other asks how that world works as a focused, full-color quest about a single Tarnished.
