Choose a starting class for its opening equipment and efficient early stats, not as a permanent identity. Every Elden Ring class can eventually become any build. Bandai Namco describes class as “a starting point,” so the practical question is which class makes your first several hours comfortable and leaves the fewest wasted levels at the build you intend to play.
For most new melee players, Vagabond is the safest all-round start; Samurai suits fast weapons, bows and status pressure; Astrologer is the cleanest sorcery opening; Confessor or Prophet fit Faith-based casting; and Prisoner is the natural spellblade choice. Vigor should be an early priority regardless of class, because hit points determine how many mistakes you can survive.

What a starting class actually changes
Your class sets your starting attributes and equipment. It does not lock you out of weapons, spells or later respecialization choices. A Vagabond can become a sorcerer, and an Astrologer can eventually wield a great weapon, but each may spend more levels meeting the requirements of that destination than a class that began closer to it.

That makes class selection an early-game efficiency decision. Compare the attributes you expect to keep at your intended level with the starting distributions: every point invested in a stat you will never use is a point unavailable for Vigor, damage, stamina or spell resources. The equipment matters just as much during the opening areas, when replacing a weapon, shield or armor set may take time.

These are playstyle recommendations inferred from the official class descriptions and attribute functions, not mandatory rankings. Your preferred moveset and willingness to experiment matter more than a theoretical optimum.
| Playstyle | Good starting classes | Main stats | Why it fits | Watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Heavy melee, greatswords and colossal weapons | Vagabond, Hero | Vigor, Strength, Endurance | Strength supports large, slower weapons and powerful stance-breaking bursts. | Heavy armor and weapons can push equipment load into a heavy roll; add Endurance or use lighter gear. |
| Fast melee, bows, bleed or frost pressure | Samurai, Warrior | Vigor, Dexterity, Endurance; Arcane for a dedicated bleed plan | Dexterity supports quick or ranged attacks and commonly pairs with status effects. | Spreading points across every damage stat early delays survivability and weapon upgrades. |
| Mostly ranged sorcery | Astrologer | Intelligence, Mind, Vigor; some Endurance | Intelligence governs sorceries while Mind supplies the FP to cast them. | Low Vigor makes mistakes lethal, and a caster still needs stamina and a workable load for dodging. |
| Incantations, buffs, healing and flexible elemental damage | Prophet, Confessor | Faith, Mind, Vigor; Endurance as needed | Faith incantations combine damage with utility, healing and buffs. | Seals and Faith-scaling weapons have different requirements, so choose equipment before heavily specializing. |
| Status, bleed, poison and item discovery | Bandit | Arcane, Dexterity or Strength, Vigor | Arcane increases status buildup and item discovery when paired with a suitable weapon. | Arcane alone does not automatically increase every weapon’s physical damage. |
| Hybrid spellblade | Prisoner | Dexterity, Intelligence, Vigor, Mind | Combines a fast weapon with sorcery and benefits from Dexterity’s cast-speed effect. | Two offensive attributes require tighter level planning than a single-stat build. |
| Experimentation or unusual respec paths | Wretch | Depends on the final plan | A blank slate gives an experienced player flexible allocation. | It starts with the weakest equipment and no early specialization advantage. |
How the core attributes shape a build
Vigor: the first survival check
Vigor increases HP and is “one of the most important stats to level early on,” according to Bandai Namco’s stats guide. Damage stats do nothing if a single mistake ends the attempt, so raise Vigor alongside your offensive stat rather than postponing it until the end of the game.
Published Vigor softcaps are 40 and 60. The guide reports 1,450 HP at 40 Vigor, 1,900 at 60 and 2,100 at 99. The large gain through 40 and the smaller gain after 60 explain why many builds treat 40 and then 60 as natural checkpoints instead of rushing to 99.
| Vigor point | Reported HP | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| 40 | 1,450 | First published softcap; a strong early-to-midgame survival target. |
| 60 | 1,900 | Second published softcap; useful when continuing to invest in durability. |
| 99 | 2,100 | Maximum shown in the guide, with sharply diminished returns after 60. |
Mind: FP for casting and skills
Mind increases FP, the resource used by sorceries, incantations, weapon skills and spirit summons. A spellcaster or skill-heavy character must budget Mind for the amount of time they want to fight before resting. A conventional melee character can often manage with about 10–15 Mind, while a caster generally wants more; the correct amount depends on how often you cast and how much of your damage comes from skills.
Endurance: stamina and equipment load
Endurance controls stamina and equip load. Stamina determines how many attacks, blocks and rolls you can perform before being exposed; equip load determines your movement and roll category. The published bands are:
- Light: 29.9% load or below.
- Medium: 30%–69.9%.
- Heavy: 70%–99.9%.
- Over-encumbered: 100% or more.
Staying below 70% is the practical defensive rule for a normal, responsive roll. If a heavy weapon or shield pushes you over that line, add Endurance, remove a piece of equipment or select a lighter alternative before sacrificing Vigor.
Strength and Dexterity: choosing a physical damage identity
Strength favors large, slower weapons and high-impact stance damage. It is the natural foundation for a deliberate melee style that wins trades or breaks an enemy’s stance. Dexterity favors quicker attacks and ranged weapons and commonly pairs with bleed or frost application. Neither is universally better: the weapon’s scaling and moveset determine the payoff.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsTwo-handing gives a 1.5× effective Strength modifier for requirements and scaling. Dexterity receives no equivalent bonus, so a Strength character can meet some weapon requirements and gain more damage by using both hands. This does not make every Strength weapon superior; confirm the individual weapon’s scaling before allocating levels.
Intelligence, Faith and Arcane
Intelligence is the sorcery attribute. A mostly ranged mage normally combines it with Mind and enough Vigor to survive pressure. Faith supports incantations, including direct damage, healing and buffs, so Faith builds can remain useful when enemies resist one damage approach. Arcane increases status buildup and item discovery, making it valuable for bleed and poison plans, but it does not automatically raise the raw damage of every weapon; the weapon must actually scale with Arcane.
For weapon and casting attributes, the guide gives approximate softcaps around 20, 55 and 80 for Strength and Dexterity, and around 20, 50 and 80 for Intelligence, Faith and Arcane weapon scaling. Treat these as diminishing-return landmarks, not universal breakpoints: a particular weapon’s affinity and scaling can change the result.

Class-by-class recommendations
Vagabond: the forgiving melee start
Pick Vagabond when you want a sturdy opening and have not yet decided between Strength and Dexterity. Its early distribution supports Vigor, physical damage and Endurance, letting you test slower and faster weapons before committing. Watch your load when combining substantial armor with a large weapon; the class is most comfortable when it remains at medium load.
Hero: commit to heavy Strength
Hero is the more direct choice if your plan is already centered on Strength, large weapons and stance-breaking attacks. Keep Vigor and Endurance moving with Strength so the character can survive close range and maintain a medium roll. Two-handing is especially valuable for this path because of the 1.5× effective Strength modifier.
Samurai and Warrior: speed, range and status
Samurai is a strong opening for a fast melee character who also wants a bow or status pressure. Warrior points in the same general Dexterity direction and suits players who prefer rapid attacks. Add Arcane only when your chosen weapon and affinity benefit from it; otherwise, early Vigor, Dexterity and Endurance produce a more reliable foundation.
Astrologer: a focused sorcery route
Astrologer begins closest to a pure Intelligence plan. Raise Intelligence for sorcery power, Mind for FP and Vigor for a margin of error. Endurance remains useful even when most damage is ranged because every fight still involves movement, stamina and equipment-load limits. Do not interpret “ranged” as permission to ignore HP.
Prophet and Confessor: Faith with utility
Choose Prophet for a more dedicated incantation direction or Confessor when you want a flexible Faith-and-melee opening. Faith spells can provide damage, healing and buffs, but the correct seal and weapon requirements differ. Select the equipment and spells you actually intend to use, then meet their requirements before pushing Faith higher.
Bandit: status and Arcane planning
Bandit fits a character built around bleed, poison or item discovery. Arcane is most effective when the weapon’s scaling and status behavior support it, with Dexterity or Strength supplying the complementary physical damage. An Arcane-heavy allocation on a weapon that does not scale with Arcane can leave raw damage disappointing.
Prisoner: the spellblade compromise
Prisoner is designed for a character that wants a quick weapon in one moment and sorcery in the next. Dexterity, Intelligence, Vigor and Mind all compete for levels, so decide which attack mode is primary at your target level. Dexterity’s cast-speed effect helps the hybrid feel responsive, but it does not remove the need to budget FP and HP.
Wretch: only when you value a blank slate
Wretch makes sense for an experienced player who understands requirements and plans to experiment or respec. Its neutral starting point is flexible, but the weak opening equipment and lack of an early specialization advantage make it a poor default recommendation for a first character.

- Choose the combat loop. Decide whether you want heavy melee, fast/status melee, sorcery, Faith casting, Arcane status or a spellblade before optimizing numbers.
- Meet equipment requirements. Check the requirements for the weapon, shield, seal, staff and spells you intend to use. The official guide warns that failing requirements significantly reduces weapon damage.
- Raise Vigor early. Add HP while learning enemy patterns; use the 40 and 60 softcaps as durability checkpoints rather than racing to maximum damage.
- Add the resource stat. Increase Mind when FP limits your spells, skills or spirit summons. A conventional melee character often needs only about 10–15 Mind, while a caster generally needs more.
- Keep the roll usable. Adjust Endurance, armor and weapon choices to stay below 70% load for a medium roll and to maintain enough stamina for your chosen attack sequence.
- Concentrate damage investment. Once requirements, HP and mobility are covered, focus on the primary scaling stat. Add a second damage stat only when the weapon, spell package or hybrid plan clearly benefits from it.
- Recheck scaling after equipment changes. A new affinity or weapon can alter which attribute pays off. Do not assume a level remains efficient simply because it was correct for an earlier weapon.
Strength or Dexterity: a quick decision framework
- Choose Strength if you enjoy slower swings, large weapons, trading safely and breaking stance with heavy hits.
- Choose Dexterity if you prefer rapid attacks, bows, mobility and frequent bleed or frost application.
- Choose a quality or hybrid direction only after identifying a weapon whose scaling rewards both; otherwise, splitting points delays the stronger single-stat returns.
- Use two hands when your Strength plan allows it, remembering that the effective modifier is 1.5× only for Strength.
When to check your game version
Exact damage, status behavior and PvP interactions can change with regulation updates. Bandai Namco’s App/Regulation Version 1.16.1, released August 21, 2025 for PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series and Steam, fixed weapon-affinity, status and blocking bugs and required online players to apply the update. The official site references later 2026 updates, so verify the regulation version installed on the reader’s platform before treating a damage number or PvP interaction as current. The class and attribute principles above are broader than any one patch, but exact scaling should be checked against the live version.

If you have no fixed plan, start as Vagabond, keep a medium load, raise Vigor early and test both Strength- and Dexterity-compatible weapons before specializing. Choose Samurai instead if fast attacks, bows or status effects already appeal to you. Choose Astrologer or Prophet/Confessor only when you genuinely want to cast; their early Mind and Intelligence or Faith investment is valuable for that purpose but less efficient for a purely physical character.
