Start by activating every Site of Grace, accept Melina’s accord when she appears, and explore Limgrave before forcing your way through Stormveil. That sequence unlocks fast travel, healing and flask restoration, Torrent, and rune-based leveling while giving you time to improve Vigor, flasks, weapons, and spirit support.
The golden Guidance of Grace is a useful orientation rather than a mandatory quest line. A strong enemy such as the Tree Sentinel can be bypassed, and the practical low-spoiler regional order is Limgrave, then Liurnia of the Lakes, then Caelid.

Your first priorities after the tutorial
Elden Ring gives you freedom immediately, but that freedom can make the opening hours feel directionless. Use the following order to establish the systems that make exploration safer before you commit to a major boss.

1. Activate every Site of Grace you pass
Sites of Grace are your checkpoints and navigation anchors. Resting at one restores HP, FP, status ailments, and your sacred flasks. Discovered sites are recorded on the map and become fast-travel destinations, so touching one now saves a long ride later.
#1 Best Overall
- Collaborating with George R.R. Martin to create the ELDEN RING mythos has been a genuinely delightful experience and a source of wonderful inspiration. The team is working hard to ensure that the world of ELDEN RING will be a fascinating place for players to explore, filled with peril and wonder from its furthest reaches to its lowest depths. This is a FromSoftware title through and through, rich in fantasy and RPG action. We sincerely hope you look forward to it.
- Building the world of ELDEN RING with Miyazaki-san and his team was a treat! The graphics, mythos, and action-RPG gameplay will deliver an unforgettable experience. I can’t wait for people to see what ELDEN RING has in store for them.” Said George R.R. Martin.
Some Sites of Grace emit a golden ray. The official starter guidance explains that “the light emanating from some sites of grace gives a hint as to where you may want to go next.” Treat that ray as a suggestion about a possible major route, not an instruction to ignore everything else. Activate nearby sites even when you intend to travel in another direction.
2. Rest until Melina offers her accord
Continue resting at early Sites of Grace rather than rushing past them. Melina eventually appears and offers an accord. Accepting it grants the Spectral Steed Whistle, which lets you summon Torrent, and unlocks the ability to spend runes on character levels.
This conversation is the first major progression gate for a new player. Before accepting it, you cannot use the normal rune-leveling service. Afterward, every rest at a Site of Grace can become a chance to turn accumulated runes into survivability or the attributes your equipment requires.

Early points are most useful when they support one clear play style. Put levels into Vigor for more HP and into the attributes required by one weapon or spell approach. Do not divide every point among all available attributes simply because each has an appealing description. A focused character reaches usable equipment requirements sooner and has more room for mistakes.
There is no official universal best starting class, fixed beginner level, or dated completion-time benchmark. Your class and eventual build can change as you learn what weapons, spells, and combat distance suit you. The important early decision is to avoid spreading your first runes so widely that no weapon or defensive stat improves meaningfully.
Open Limgrave before committing to Stormveil
Limgrave is the starting region and the best place to learn how exploration, upgrades, and optional encounters fit together. You can follow Guidance of Grace toward Gatefront and Stormveil, but take a circuit through the surrounding region first.
Find the Limgrave map fragment
The map begins obscured. Look for the faintly drawn stone monuments beside roads; these are the usual locations of map fragments. The Limgrave fragment removes much of the regional fog and turns navigation into a deliberate activity instead of a guessing game.
Once the map is readable, place personal markers for caves, merchants, strong enemies, and treasure you have not yet collected. Marking a location is especially useful when an encounter is clearly possible but currently inefficient. You can return after gaining levels, improving a weapon, or increasing flask capacity without relying on memory.
Use Limgrave’s landmarks as an upgrade route
| Landmark or activity | Why a beginner should visit | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| Churches | Reliable sources of Sacred Tears | Sacred Tears improve how much each flask restores |
| Tunnels and mines | Concentrated upgrade-material routes | Smithing stones for improving weapons |
| Catacombs | Useful for spirit-ash progression | Glovewort used to upgrade spirit ashes |
| Roadside and out-of-the-way sites | Expand fast-travel coverage and reveal activities | Sites of Grace, map markers, merchants, and unfinished treasure |
This loop gives you practical power without requiring a named boss kill. Sacred Tears make every flask use more valuable, Golden Seeds add flask charges, smithing stones raise the performance of a weapon you already understand, and Glovewort improves the spirit ashes available to you.
A reliable first-hour checklist
Use this sequence if you want a concrete plan while keeping the game’s open-ended structure.
- Leave the tutorial and touch the first Sites of Grace. Activate every one along your initial route so healing and fast travel are available.
- Follow Guidance of Grace toward Gatefront. Observe the route and nearby threats, but do not interpret the golden ray as a requirement to fight immediately.
- Rest at multiple early sites until Melina appears. Accept her accord to receive the Spectral Steed Whistle and unlock rune spending.
- Summon Torrent and open the Limgrave map. Find the stone monument beside a road, collect the map fragment, and add markers for anything you plan to revisit.
- Make an upgrade circuit. Visit accessible churches for Sacred Tears, explore a tunnel for smithing stones, and check a catacomb for Glovewort.
- Spend runes before a risky expedition. Prioritize Vigor and the requirements for your chosen weapon or spell style rather than carrying a large unspent balance into an unknown fight.
- Test one main route and one optional route. Ride toward Stormveil to understand the intended direction, then turn aside to explore Limgrave so you learn that postponing a fight is allowed.
- Return to difficult encounters with a purpose. Revisit a boss or strong enemy after a weapon upgrade, a flask improvement, additional Vigor, or a better understanding of its attacks.
What to upgrade first
Beginners often search for a replacement weapon when the more efficient improvement is defensive capacity or a better-upgraded version of the weapon already in hand. Use the following priorities to decide where each early rune and item should go.
Vigor: the safest first level investment
Vigor increases HP. More HP gives you time to recognize an unfamiliar attack, survive a mistake, and heal instead of losing an entire attempt to one hit. The official early-game tips specifically identify Vigor as the attribute that raises health, making it the clearest general-purpose priority while you learn enemy patterns.
Weapon requirements and smithing stones
After Vigor, meet the attribute requirements for one weapon or one spell style. A weapon you cannot properly wield is less useful than a modest weapon whose requirements you meet and whose upgrade level you can raise.
Weapons can be improved at the smithing table in the Church of Elleh or by Smithing Master Hewg in Roundtable Hold. Early Limgrave mines and caves contain smithing stones, so exploring those locations directly supports your chosen equipment rather than relying on random drops.
Flasks: two separate improvements
Flask progression has two independent parts:
- Sacred Tears improve the amount restored by each flask use. Churches are dependable places to search for them.
- Golden Seeds increase the number of flask uses available. Look for them while exploring roads and landmarks, then apply them through the flask management option at a Site of Grace when the game allows the next charge.
For a new player, these upgrades usually create more room for error than immediately abandoning a familiar weapon. A larger pool of uses and stronger restoration help during exploration, while the weapon you already understand benefits from smithing stones.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsSpirit ashes and Glovewort
Spirits can assist in difficult areas and boss fights once the Spirit Calling Bell and spirit ashes are available. Catacombs are important because they contain Glovewort, the material used to improve spirit ashes. If a spirit is helping you control space or draw an enemy’s attention, upgrading it can be a better next objective than repeatedly attempting the same fight with an unchanged setup.
How to spend runes without losing momentum
Runes serve both as currency for levels and as a resource you can lose when you die. The practical rule is to spend them before a high-risk trip whenever a level, weapon improvement, or other known upgrade is available.
- Use a Site of Grace after returning from an expedition and check whether your runes buy Vigor or a needed equipment requirement.
- If you are close to a level but not there yet, clear a familiar nearby activity rather than carrying the balance into an unexplored boss arena.
- Do not delay all spending while waiting for a perfect build. Early survivability and a functional weapon are valuable immediately.
- When a weapon or spell requires an attribute you do not have, decide whether it fits your intended style before investing. Meeting every requirement at once produces a shallow character.
The objective is not to reach a particular level target; the official material does not establish a universal beginner level for each area. Judge readiness by whether you survive ordinary encounters, can restore from mistakes, and can use the equipment you intend to rely on.

Where to go after Limgrave
The broad, low-spoiler regional orientation from the official gameplay overview is Limgrave → Liurnia of the Lakes → Caelid. This is a practical progression suggestion, not a rigid quest order. Elden Ring permits detours, returns, and postponement.
Limgrave: build your foundation
Stay in Limgrave while you are still discovering how Sites of Grace, map fragments, flasks, weapon upgrades, and Torrent fit together. You do not need to clear every cave before moving on, but the region should provide enough exploration to establish a dependable weapon, more Vigor, and improved flask performance.
Stormveil: follow the main pressure when ready
Guidance of Grace points toward Gatefront and Stormveil, making the castle a natural early objective. Enter when you can consistently handle the surrounding enemies and have a reason to spend your runes before attempting the area. If the approach or a boss stops being productive, mark the location and return after exploring elsewhere.
Liurnia of the Lakes: the next broad region
After Limgrave and the Stormveil direction, Liurnia is the next general region in the official orientation. Treat the transition as an invitation to widen your route, not proof that every Limgrave activity must be completed first. Continue the same habits: activate Sites of Grace, map the area, note obstacles, and spend resources on the equipment you actually use.
Caelid: a later branch, not an emergency destination
Caelid appears third in the broad progression suggestion. You can encounter routes toward it earlier, but seeing a difficult enemy or a distant landmark is not a command to defeat it immediately. Record the location, improve your character through safer exploration, and return when the fight becomes a useful challenge rather than a wall.

What to do when an enemy or boss is too hard
The official early-game guidance uses the Tree Sentinel as its example of a powerful enemy that can be bypassed and revisited. Its lesson applies broadly: a difficult encounter often signals that you should change the problem, not repeat the same attempt indefinitely.
Recognize a postponement signal
Consider leaving when you are losing most of your healing before learning the enemy’s pattern, dealing negligible damage despite meeting your equipment requirements, or spending a large unspent rune balance at the entrance. These signs do not prove that you are under-leveled, but they indicate that another activity may offer a better return.
Use a four-step retreat loop
- Mark the encounter on your map. You preserve the objective without relying on memory.
- Ride or fast-travel to another Site of Grace. Choose a route with unexplored caves, a church, a tunnel, or a catacomb.
- Convert the detour into a concrete upgrade. Seek Vigor, Sacred Tears, Golden Seeds, smithing stones, or Glovewort rather than wandering without a goal.
- Return and reassess. A stronger flask, improved weapon, upgraded spirit, or clearer understanding of the attack pattern can change the fight more than another identical attempt.
Bring spirit assistance when available
Once you have the Spirit Calling Bell and ashes, spirits can assist in difficult areas and boss fights. They may create opportunities to heal, reposition, or attack from a safer angle. Spirit use is part of the game’s supported systems, not a failure to play correctly. If an ash is useful, catacomb exploration and Glovewort upgrades give you a direct way to improve that support.
Choosing between routes, upgrades, and fights
When several options compete for your time, compare them using four practical axes rather than asking for a single “best” route.
Recommended Free Tools
| Decision axis | Questions to ask | Useful action |
|---|---|---|
| Survivability | Do I have enough HP and flask restoration to survive a mistake? | Invest in Vigor, find Sacred Tears, and increase flask charges with Golden Seeds. |
| Weapon access | Can I meet the requirements and improve the weapon I want to use? | Focus on its required attributes and search Limgrave tunnels for smithing stones. |
| Mobility | Can I reach and leave this area efficiently? | Accept Melina’s accord, use Torrent, and activate every Site of Grace. |
| Commitment level | Can this fight be postponed without blocking useful progress? | Mark the location, explore another route, and return after a targeted upgrade. |
This framework explains why two beginners can take different valid routes. One may need more Vigor and flask capacity; another may already survive comfortably but lack the smithing stones required by a chosen weapon. The official systems support these choices without declaring one universal build.
Common beginner problems and fixes
“I cannot level up yet.”
Rest at several early Sites of Grace and continue until Melina appears. Accepting her accord unlocks rune spending and grants the Spectral Steed Whistle. Until that event occurs, collecting more runes does not give you the normal leveling option.
“The map is too empty to navigate.”
Search beside roads for the faint stone monument associated with the Limgrave map fragment. After collecting it, place your own markers for caves, merchants, strong enemies, and unfinished treasure. The map becomes a planning tool rather than just a display of discovered terrain.
“My flask runs out before I reach the next objective.”
Activate additional Sites of Grace so you can refill and fast-travel, then look for churches and Golden Seeds. Sacred Tears increase the amount restored per use; Golden Seeds increase the number of uses. These solve different problems, so collect both when exploring.
“My weapon feels weak.”
Confirm that you meet its attribute requirements, then seek smithing stones in early Limgrave mines and caves. Improve the weapon at the Church of Elleh smithing table or with Smithing Master Hewg in Roundtable Hold before assuming you need an entirely different weapon.
“I keep dying to the same strong enemy.”
Leave, mark the location, and choose an activity that can produce a specific improvement. The Tree Sentinel is the official example of an enemy that can be bypassed and revisited. Returning later is a normal part of the intended exploration loop.
“I do not know whether to enter Stormveil or keep exploring.”
Use readiness rather than completion as your test. If you have activated nearby Sites of Grace, accepted Melina’s accord, obtained Torrent, found the map fragment, improved Vigor or your equipment, and still have optional Limgrave routes to try, you can choose either approach. The regional order is guidance, not a checklist that requires every side location first.
A low-spoiler route you can follow
For a straightforward first playthrough, use this route while preserving the freedom to turn back:
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →- Establish checkpoints. Activate Sites of Grace from the tutorial exit toward Gatefront.
- Unlock progression systems. Rest until Melina appears, accept the accord, summon Torrent, and begin spending runes.
- Reveal Limgrave. Collect the map fragment and add markers for activities you cannot yet finish.
- Build practical power. Explore a church for a Sacred Tear, a tunnel for smithing stones, and a catacomb for Glovewort; search for Golden Seeds while traveling.
- Test Stormveil’s direction. Approach the main route and identify whether your current weapon, Vigor, and flask supply are adequate.
- Postpone without guilt. If a boss or strong enemy is too punishing, leave and convert another activity into a targeted upgrade.
- Advance regionally. Move from Limgrave toward Liurnia of the Lakes, then consider Caelid, while continuing to activate sites and spend runes.
This route answers the most important early questions without spoiling quests or demanding a particular class: what to do first, where to go, how to level, and how to respond when the game presents an enemy you are not ready to beat.
