For a forgiving first melee run, start as a Vagabond, put early levels into Vigor, and build around one weapon you enjoy using. That is a practical beginner recommendation, not a rule or a permanently optimal build: your starting class determines your opening stats and equipment, but it does not lock your character into one way of fighting. If you would rather dual-wield, cast from range, or use incantations, choose a start that fits that preference instead.

This guide focuses on the decisions that make the opening hours easier: choosing an origin, spending levels without scattering them, and finding a weapon whose requirements and moveset you can support. Class availability can differ by edition, so check which version you own before relying on a particular class list.

Which Elden Ring starting class is friendliest for a beginner?

Vagabond is a straightforward default for a player who wants to learn through melee. A beginner guide updated August 26, 2026, recommends it for its larger health pool, shield, armor, two weapons, and flexible stats. That is the guide publisher’s recommendation—not a game rule, and not proof that Vagabond is best for every player. The right choice depends on whether you want to block and counter, attack quickly, or use spells from a distance. Mobalytics’ beginner guide provides the recommendation; Bandai Namco describes a class as a starting point rather than a permanent limitation.

Choose the opening package that makes you want to play. You can change direction as you find equipment and learn what suits you, but your first levels and starting kit will shape how the early game feels. A shield and armor can give a learner more room to respond to mistakes, while a faster, more aggressive setup may feel better if you prefer to keep moving and attacking. A caster’s opening emphasis is different again: range can help manage distance, but spells consume FP.

Starting class or direction Good fit if you want What to keep in mind
Vagabond A forgiving melee start with a shield and flexible options. A sensible default for learning, not a universally strongest class. The beginner recommendation is from Mobalytics.
Warrior A more aggressive, dual-wielding opening. Choose it because that faster, more offensive feel appeals to you, not because it removes the need to learn defense.
Astrologer Ranged sorcery and an Intelligence-oriented direction. Spells use FP, so expect to manage a resource as well as positioning.
Prophet Faith-oriented incantations, including the option to use healing or buffs. Incantations are a different direction from sorcery; decide whether their role fits your preferred play.

Bandai Namco’s class page illustrates the variety with Astrologer sorceries, Samurai slashes, and Prophet incantations, then emphasizes that a class is a starting point. Read the official class overview for that framing rather than treating an origin as a locked character build.

How to compare the starting directions

When two openings sound appealing, compare what each asks of you rather than looking for a single winner. For survivability, consider Vigor alongside whether you have a shield and armor that support the way you want to learn. For pace and risk, think about whether you prefer heavier, slower attacks with Strength-oriented weapons and stance pressure, or quicker attacks that may suit Dexterity-oriented weapons and status effects. Neither approach removes the need to learn enemy timing.

Range is another trade-off. Sorceries and incantations can give you ways to attack from a distance, but frequent casting depends on FP; weapon skills and spirit summons use FP too. A mostly melee setup can spend less attention on that resource. Finally, consider equipment burden: heavier armor or weapons count toward equipment load, so the kit you like must still fit the roll category you want. These are practical comparison points, not a ranking of classes.

What stats should a new player focus on?

For most first melee characters, the useful order is: get enough Vigor to survive errors, meet the requirements of a weapon you like, then invest in the attributes that improve that weapon or support your chosen playstyle. Add Endurance when stamina or equipment weight is limiting you. Add Mind if you regularly use spells, weapon skills, or spirit summons. Avoid putting early levels into every damage stat at once.

There is no universal level-by-level allocation in the official guides cited here. Use your actual problem as the reason to spend a level: surviving a fight, meeting a weapon requirement, improving the scaling of your chosen weapon, or getting enough FP or equipment capacity to use your preferred approach. If you cannot identify what a point is meant to improve, consider holding off until you have tried the weapon, spell, or equipment that prompted the decision.

Vigor: buy room to make mistakes

Vigor increases HP, which gives a new player more margin to recover from a missed dodge, an unfamiliar attack, or a failed block. Bandai Namco’s official stats guide calls it one of the most important early stats and defines it this way: “Vigor (VGR) is our health (HP) which determines how many hits you can take before dying.” See Bandai Namco’s stats guide.

A useful long-term milestone is 40 Vigor, not a first-hour quota. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s advanced-stat guide, published in 2023, gives these comparison points: 40 Vigor yields 1,450 Health; 60 yields 1,900; and 99 yields 2,100. The increasingly smaller gains illustrate diminishing returns. Treat 40 as a broad progression target, then consider 60 after the rest of your build’s needs are covered—not as a requirement to stop exploring or improving your weapon. The figures and softcap discussion are in the official advanced-stats guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

In practical terms, do not interpret “aim for 40” as “put every level into Vigor until you reach 40.” You still need the requirements for the weapon you want to use, and your build may need other stats to function. If a difficult stretch is ending in repeated deaths before you can learn an enemy’s pattern, more HP can help create additional attempts. If you are already surviving comfortably, a weapon requirement or another clear limitation may deserve attention first.

Strength and Dexterity: follow your weapon

Meet a weapon’s attribute requirements first. After that, invest in the attributes shown by its scaling: Strength commonly supports heavier, slower weapons and stance pressure, while Dexterity commonly supports faster or ranged weapons. A displayed scaling letter is not the whole damage story; weapon upgrade level also affects scaling bonuses. That is why a weapon you consistently upgrade can be a more useful foundation than a collection of unrelated options and scattered stat investments.

Do not mistake the broad Strength and Dexterity tendencies for a promise that every weapon works the same way. Check the requirements and displayed scaling on the weapon you have chosen. A weapon can ask for attributes before you can use it effectively, and scaling bonuses become more relevant as its level rises. The practical sequence is to meet its requirements, keep it upgraded, then favor the attributes that support it.

Two-handing is another way to emphasize a Strength-oriented weapon without changing your class. Bandai Namco’s beginner guide says two-handing increases weapon power and makes it easier to break an opponent’s guard. Its advanced guide explains that two-handing grants a Strength bonus for scaling. Try it when a weapon’s handling and encounter make sense for it; it is an option, not an instruction to abandon a shield in every situation. See the official starter guide and advanced-stats guide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Mind: increase it when FP use is part of your plan

Mind governs FP, the resource used by spells, weapon skills, and spirit summons. A spell-focused character is likely to need more room for repeated FP use than a straightforward melee character. For a melee build, invest when you find yourself unable to use the skills or summons you actually rely on; you do not need to treat Mind as an automatic early priority just because the option exists.

That means a caster should think about both the spell’s usefulness and the FP budget behind repeated casts. A melee character who mostly attacks with ordinary weapon swings may have less reason to spend early levels here, but a melee build that regularly uses skills or summons still draws on FP. Decide based on what you actually press during a fight, not just on whether your class began with magic.

Endurance: solve stamina and weight problems

Endurance governs stamina and equipment load. If you run short of stamina during the actions you need, or your current equipment makes your roll too heavy, it may be worth leveling. The practical weight target for a normal/medium roll is 69.9% or less of maximum equipment load. Bandai Namco Entertainment America’s 2023 guide labels 30–69.9% normal/medium and 70–99.9% heavy. Use the number as a check on your equipped total, not a reason to add Endurance without a problem to solve. The thresholds are in the official advanced-stats guide.

Stamina and equipment load are related to the same attribute but are different reasons to consider Endurance. If stamina is the issue, ask whether your chosen actions demand more than you can sustain. If weight is the issue, first check whether changing an equipped item would bring the total back below the threshold. Adding capacity is one solution; carrying less is another. The useful choice depends on whether the heavier gear is worth the level investment and how you want to play.

Intelligence, Faith, and Arcane: make them deliberate choices

Intelligence supports sorceries; Faith supports incantations, including healing and buffs; Arcane contributes to certain requirements, item discovery, and status buildup. Raise these attributes when the spells, weapons, or status approach you have chosen call for them. They are not interchangeable general-purpose damage stats, and raising all three alongside Strength and Dexterity is an easy way to delay the benefits of a focused build. Bandai Namco’s attribute guide explains their roles.

A useful check is whether a specific spell, weapon requirement, or status plan is the reason you want the points. If not, an Intelligence or Faith investment may not improve the weapon you currently rely on. Arcane is not a substitute for choosing a core weapon direction either; its role is situational and should follow a deliberate plan.

How to choose a weapon and build around it

There is no universally strongest beginner weapon established by these recommendations. A better first weapon is one whose requirements you can meet and whose speed, reach, and attack rhythm make sense to you. Test its moveset rather than judging only by its name or apparent damage. Then look at its attribute requirements and scaling so your level choices reinforce the weapon instead of pulling in several directions.

  1. Try a manageable moveset. Pay attention to whether the attacks feel comfortable to start, whether their pace suits your openings, and whether you can recover into defense when needed.
  2. Check the attribute requirements. Avoid investing in a weapon you cannot use effectively without first planning for its requirements.
  3. Read the scaling and choose a damage direction. Favor the attributes that match the weapon’s scaling rather than leveling every attribute that might increase damage on some other weapon.
  4. Upgrade your chosen main weapon consistently. Weapon level improves scaling bonuses, so concentrating materials and stats on one main weapon is a useful way to make progress legible. This is practical guidance based on the upgrade and scaling relationship, not a rule that you may only carry one weapon.
  5. Reassess when you find a better fit. If another moveset feels more natural, compare its requirements and scaling before shifting levels and upgrades toward it.

Ashes of War can modify scaling grades, according to Bandai Namco’s advanced-stats guide, so a weapon’s initial scaling does not have to be the final word. The same guide explains the Strength benefit of two-handing. These are tools for adjusting a chosen setup; they do not make it useful to spread levels across every attribute before you know what you want to support.

What to notice when you test a weapon

“Feels good” is a useful starting point, but make the test specific. Notice whether the attack speed lets you act during the openings you recognize, whether the reach helps you connect reliably, and whether you can return to a defensive action after attacking. Consider whether you prefer one deliberate heavy hit or a faster series of attacks. This helps distinguish a weapon you enjoy using from one that only looks powerful in a menu.

Then check the character-building side of the choice. Compare the attribute requirements with your current stats, and look at the weapon’s scaling to see which damage attributes are worth supporting. If the weapon asks for an attribute you have not invested in, decide whether that requirement fits your intended direction before committing. An Ash of War may alter scaling grades, but it does not eliminate the need to understand the weapon you are building around.

Keeping one main weapon upgraded is a sensible beginner method, not a prohibition on experimentation or carrying alternatives. It makes the relationship between your levels, upgrades, and damage easier to evaluate. If you split upgrades and stats among several unrelated weapons, it can be harder to tell whether a problem is coming from the moveset, the weapon level, or the attribute spread. Try a different weapon when you find one that suits you better, then make the change deliberately.

Three beginner build directions

Think of these as ways to organize a first character, not fixed recipes with mandatory level-by-level stat totals. The official guides do not establish a universal level plan or a definitive weapon ranking. Each direction below is a priority pattern: identify the playstyle, cover its requirements, and then spend points where the setup actually needs support.

Shielded melee: Vagabond with a focused Strength or Dexterity weapon

Use Vagabond as the practical starting option if you want a shield, armor, and room to learn close-range fights. Raise Vigor early, then meet the requirements for a single main weapon and favor the scaling attribute it rewards. This makes it easier to judge whether you need more health, stamina, or weapon damage instead of guessing at several competing stats.

This direction emphasizes survivability and flexibility, not passive defense as the only answer. A shield may help you learn close-range encounters, but you still need to pay attention to enemy timing and choose when to attack. Keep an eye on the combined weight of your shield, armor, and weapon; heavier equipment can change your roll category. If you equip a heavier piece and cross the medium-roll limit, compare swapping it with adding Endurance.

Fast, aggressive melee: Warrior direction

If you want to attack quickly and prefer a more aggressive or dual-wielding start, Warrior may suit you better than a shield-oriented default. Favor Dexterity when your chosen weapon’s scaling supports it, but retain the same discipline: Vigor provides survival margin, and Endurance is useful when stamina or load is the actual constraint. Fast attacks do not make careful timing irrelevant.

Compared with the shielded direction, this approach puts more emphasis on pace and choosing openings rather than relying on the same defensive kit. It is not automatically more difficult or more powerful; it simply rewards a different rhythm. Test whether you can reliably get attacks in and still respond to danger. If you find that you are taking too many hits, Vigor remains a sensible investment even when your character is built for offense.

Ranged or faith-based play: Astrologer or Prophet

Choose an Intelligence-oriented Astrologer if your preferred first instinct is sorcery and ranged pressure, or a Faith-oriented Prophet if incantations are the appeal. Plan for FP because spells, weapon skills, and summons use it. The important distinction is not that a caster can never use melee; it is that frequent casting gives Mind and resource management a larger role than they would have in a simple melee plan.

For this direction, compare how much of your fighting you expect to do with spells or incantations versus your weapon. More frequent casting makes FP more central; a character that mostly uses melee can put less emphasis there. Intelligence and Faith are not interchangeable labels for “magic,” so choose the attribute that matches the spells and approach you want. Keep your weapon requirements in view too, since using a caster-oriented start does not mean you must ignore melee equipment.

Equipment load and the roll to protect

Armor and weapons affect equipped weight, so adding heavier gear can change your roll category. Use the status information to compare total equipment weight with maximum load. For the normal/medium category described in Bandai Namco’s 2023 guide, stay at or below 69.9%; 70–99.9% is heavy. If your load crosses the boundary after equipping a weapon or armor piece, either remove or swap gear or invest in Endurance if the added capacity is worth the level. The exact roll bands and the role of Endurance are covered in the official advanced-stats guide.

This is a trade-off, not a simple armor-is-always-better calculation: a heavier setup may mean less room to preserve the roll category you want. Recheck weight whenever you change several equipped items rather than assuming a previously comfortable load still applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For example, if adding a weapon or armor takes your load from the medium band into the heavy band, you have two clear options supported by the stat system: change the equipment or increase equipment capacity through Endurance. Which is preferable depends on how much the item matters to your playstyle and whether you also benefit from more stamina. Do not level Endurance just because a gear menu shows weight; first decide whether you want to keep that particular loadout.

Class availability depends on edition

Do not assume every version displays the same starting-class roster. Bandai Namco’s official class page describes ten starting classes, while its current Elden Ring overview says the Tarnished Edition includes two new starting classes. The official material cited here does not settle which platforms and editions expose every added class, so confirm your own edition and platform before treating a total as universal or planning around one of the new options.

Bandai Namco describes Tarnished Edition as including the base game, Shadow of the Erdtree, two new starting classes, four exclusive armor sets, new weapons and combat techniques, and Torrent customization options. It also describes the additional content as a digital purchase on PlayStation, Xbox, and PC. That bundle information is not a requirement for the class and stat guidance in this article; do not assume every base-game retail listing includes it. Check the official Elden Ring overview for the edition description and the class page for the starting-class framing.

A simple decision checklist before spending a level

  • Need more attempts at a fight? Vigor is the direct early survival priority.
  • Want to equip a particular weapon? Check and meet its requirements before investing elsewhere.
  • Already have a weapon that feels right? Follow its scaling rather than raising every damage stat.
  • Run out of stamina or cross into heavy roll? Review Endurance and your equipment load.
  • Frequently use spells, skills, or summons? Consider whether additional Mind would make that style more practical.
  • Unsure between classes? Choose the opening kit and fighting rhythm you want to learn, knowing the class is a start rather than a lock.

This approach turns “what stats should I focus at?” into a sequence of concrete checks: survival first, requirements next, then the scaling and resources that support the weapon or casting style you actually use.

Frequently asked questions

What’s the most new-player-friendly character build?

For a forgiving melee opening, Vagabond is a practical default: Mobalytics’ beginner guide points to its larger health pool, shield, armor, two weapons, and flexible stats. It is a recommendation, not a universal winner. Choose Warrior if you prefer a more aggressive dual-wielding direction, Astrologer for Intelligence-oriented sorcery, or Prophet for Faith-oriented incantations.

What stats should I focus on first?

For a typical first melee character, prioritize Vigor for more HP, meet the requirements of a weapon you want to use, then favor the attributes that weapon scales with. Add Endurance if stamina or equipment weight is a real constraint, and Mind if you regularly use FP-consuming spells, skills, or summons. Avoid spreading levels across every damage stat without a specific reason.

Does my starting class lock me into a build?

No. Bandai Namco describes class as a starting point, not a permanent limitation. Your origin supplies starting stats and equipment that shape the opening, but you can choose a different direction as you acquire equipment and decide what style suits you.

How much Vigor should I aim for?

Use 40 Vigor as a broad progression milestone, not a requirement for the opening hours. Bandai Namco’s 2023 advanced-stat guide lists 1,450 Health at 40 Vigor, 1,900 at 60, and 2,100 at 99, showing diminishing returns. Consider higher Vigor after other needs are covered.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is a good beginner weapon?

There is no universally best beginner weapon established by these guides. Try a weapon with a moveset you can manage, check its requirements and scaling, and build toward the attributes it rewards. Upgrading one main weapon consistently is a useful way to keep your investment focused while you learn.

How do I keep a medium roll?

Keep equipped weight at 69.9% or less of maximum load. Bandai Namco’s 2023 guide calls 30–69.9% normal/medium and 70–99.9% heavy. If a new piece of equipment pushes you over the boundary, swap gear or consider Endurance if the extra equipment capacity is worth the level.

Should a beginner choose sorcery or incantations?

Choose based on the kind of casting you want: Intelligence supports sorceries, while Faith supports incantations, including healing and buffs. Both use FP, so Mind matters more when you cast often. Neither choice prevents you from using melee weapons, but meet those weapons’ requirements and support their scaling separately.

Bottom line

For a first melee run, Vagabond is a sensible, forgiving place to start, but the best beginner build is the one whose rhythm you enjoy and whose stats you can support. Build health with Vigor, meet the requirements of a weapon that feels good, follow its scaling, and keep equipment load at 69.9% or less if you want a medium roll. Add Endurance or Mind to solve actual stamina, weight, or FP needs. Your class is an opening package, not a permanent lock.
