Elastic springs can switch sound transmission by changing shape—not by using an electrical on/off control. In a 2016 experiment, researchers compressed or opened an array of coiled, solid-walled tubes to change how audible sound passed through it. The reported setup passed sound in its open state and reduced it when compressed, but it was a small research prototype, not ready-made sound insulation.
How does compressing a spring-like structure affect sound?
The structure was an acoustic metamaterial: an engineered arrangement designed to alter how sound travels. Its elements were solid-walled tubes coiled into elastic helices resembling compressed springs. Arrays of these tubes can block sound through scattering and interference. Stretching or compressing the helices changes their shape and, in turn, whether sound passes through the array.
This is a mechanical switch for sound transmission. The setup does not switch sound electronically; it changes the geometry of the material that sound encounters.

A report by Chemistry World, published 5 January 2016, described a prototype with 36 elastic helices sandwiched between two foam-covered acrylic sheets. A press-like arrangement opened or closed the structure to relax or compress the springs, while loudspeakers supplied sound for the test.
#1 Best Overall
- Exceptional Sound Absorption:These pyramid acoustic panels are engineered to effectively absorb sound waves, reducing echo and reverberation. With a high NRC (Noise Reduction Coefficient), they create a quieter, more acoustically balanced environment, ideal for recording studios, home theaters, and offices.
- Premium Material Construction:Crafted from top - grade acoustic foam, these panels are not only highly effective at sound absorption but also durable and long - lasting. The flame - retardant foam ensures safety, meeting industry - standard flame retardant requirements.
- Unique Pyramid Design:The innovative pyramid shape maximizes surface area, enhancing sound diffusion and absorption. This design not only improves acoustic performance but also adds a modern, stylish aesthetic to any space, making it a functional and decorative addition.
- Easy Installation:These panels can be easily installed on walls and ceilings without the need for special tools or professional assistance. Installation can be complete with construction adhesive or nano double side tape(not included). The lightweight design further simplifies the installation process.
- Recommended Usage Scenarios: The acoustic panel is designed for sound absorption, making it perfect for reducing echo and improving acoustic quality in home studios, podcast rooms, gaming setups, office conference rooms, vocal booths, or home theaters. Not intended for full soundproofing or noise isolation from external environments.
| Configuration | Reported result |
|---|---|
| Fully open | Sound in the 2.75–7.40 kHz range passed through unaffected, according to the 2016 report. |
| Fully compressed | The team measured a 30 dB drop across the same frequency range, according to the 2016 report. |
The 30 dB result describes the reported small experimental array and its stated test conditions. It is not a performance guarantee for a building, vehicle, or commercial soundproofing product.
What could switchable sound blocking be used for?
The report proposed possible uses in buildings and transportation, where blocking sound temporarily could be useful, and in tunable sound-based imaging. These were prospective applications, not evidence that the prototype had been deployed in products or installations.

- Soundproofing - Acoustic foam panels triangular grooves structure for better noise absorption, helps to reduce and absorb unwanted echoes, waves, reverb and flutter echoes for better recording effect.
- Upgraded Accessory - Additional 300pcs strong double-side adhesive tape is included for free, which helps you finish the installation better and protect your walls from damage. Can be removed easily.
- Quick Recovery - If this high-density foam doesn't return to shape, please soak it in water for a few minutes and dry in the air to recover the shape in 24 to 48 hours.
- Wide Applications - Suitably used not only for spot treating sound on walls in your studio and office but also for use in recording studios, vocal booths, control rooms.
- Professional Safe - With strong fire resistance and good air permeability, the acoustic foam panels can stop burning to prevent hidden fire hazards. Also, non-toxic materials won't do harm to your body while everyday use.
What are the practical limitations?
Control speed
Duke University researcher Steven Cummer said the approach was broadband in principle, but also raised concerns that it might be too slow and difficult to control in real-world settings.

Thickness and size
MIT co-author Nicholas Fang described the result as a first for switching audible-frequency sound through pure mechanical compression, while noting that the tested array was small. The report also says Fang considered the material too thick to serve as realistic sound insulation. The team was considering foam structures to reduce volume fraction while maintaining attenuation per unit mass; that was a research direction, not a demonstrated solution.

What the result means—and what it does not
The experiment showed that mechanically changing an elastic array could alter sound transmission in a measured audible-frequency band. It did not establish performance across all audible frequencies, prove the same reduction at building or vehicle scale, or demonstrate a commercially available installation. The report cites S. Babaee et al. in Advanced Materials (2015), DOI 10.1002/adma.201504469, as the underlying research reference; the details here are limited to what the 2016 Chemistry World report states.
